If I were going to upgrade from the itx mobo here what would be an equivalent micro-atx. The board costs around 160(-30 dollars for the cpu bundle from micro center).

As far as mobos go, for aruond the same price I would look at the Gigabyte Z170mx. The Asus Gene is a bit out of the range.

Caselabs Bullet BH7 ordered!

Have to drop my CLC and swap a Noctua NH-U9s. Just gonna fill the rest of the fans out with Noctua as well.

Just need that 1070 to come out so i can drop these 780TIs.

Hello guys! First time poster here (though I've been lurking this post and last year's).

I'm planning on upgrading my current system:

CPU: AMD FX-6100 Black Edition.
RAM: G.Skill Sniper DDR3 2x4GB @ 1600MHz.
Motherboard: MSI 970A-G46.
GPU: SAPPHIRE R9 270X Dual-X.
PSU: Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 500W (RS-500-PCAR).
Case: Lost the box a while ago, but apparently it's a Codegen Briza, just like this one (without those handles).
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB (WD5000AAKX)
Main Use: Gaming, I want to have the best experience possible in 1080p60 since I'm not planning on upgrading the monitor in the near future.
Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080, 60fps.

I'm on a kinda tight budget, so I'm planning on getting the new parts over a few months, so the first thing I was thinking of buying is the GPU. Right now my choice would be a GTX 1070 since it seems like a great alternative to the GTX 980 (which was my choice before I heard about the GTX 10 series) and apparently it's not going to be very expensive, but I feel like I'm gonna get really bottlenecked, so now I'm wondering what to upgrade next, after the video card. Should I upgrade my processor to a better AMD FX model or should I try and switch to Intel (and probably to DDR4)? I'm going to stick to 1080p for a while, so maybe it's not bad to upgrade to a faster DDR3 and AM3+ processor...

Also, since I'm probably getting the video card in Europe, what online German stores would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Going for the 1070 instead of the 980 is the right move. More power and vram for less money is always a good idea.

I'd recommend changing your cpu. The fx 6100 is seriously outdated by today's Standart and often enough outperformed by an i3.

Popular German online stores are:

Mindfactory.de
Amazon.de
Alternate.de
Arlt.com

But you can also use PCPartPicker.com or idealo.de to search for the best
price deals.

Good for you!!! I'm so jealous. Can't justify the almost $400 right now that the case would cost.

Bought a pair of 780s instead. Now I need to find a stock cooler for one of them.

Ordering This PC right now. Figured it was high time moving on from a 5870 now that the new cards are here. The two week wait on the FTW is gonna be brutal. I wanna play Doom :(

right now this is what I'm aiming to build down the line...

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH
RAM: G.Skill TridentZ DDR4 2x8GB @ 3200 MHz
GPU: GTX 1070 (depending on which 3rd Party card is better...hopefully getting this in the Summer)
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 850W (could possibly go with the 750 but the price difference isn't all that much)
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO (either 250GB or 500GB)
HDD: 2TB (probably by HGST or Toshiba)
Case: Fractal Design Define R5

still a ways off from me being able to do this but any thoughts?

The build is fine, but how far in the future are we talking? With how frequently prices change (sales and whatnot) it's not really worth planning a build until you're a couple weeks away from ordering or sooner, imho.

I know...that's why I said right now that's what I would do...I'd expect some changes here and there on some of the stuff depending on how things go down the line

My Noctua package dropped today and I couldn't be happier!
Replaced my exhaust fan and the two fans of my Noctua NH-D14 with NF-F12 2000 PWMs and case fans with NF-A14 2000 PWMs. Finally I can reliably regulate rpm of each fan <3

They also look nice and sound great (no grinding or whatever). Super happy with them, I'll set up a custom fan profile for everything tomorrow.
The 3pin fan controller I used did a decent job, but the supplied case fans are just trash compared to these. Couldn't regulate them as low as the Noctuas and they made awful sounds.

Quick'n'dirty pic. (Yeah, I still need a sleeved ATX power cable, an USB3.0 connector cable that isn't 2m too long and a 2x8pin PCI power cable for my upcoming 1080 FTW)

Some more questions, I've search and find some people are suggesting ASUS Z170-AR/Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 motherboard, but that would be around $70 more expensive than current build, is that worth it? I can't see much difference beside USB 3.0/3.1. How about MSI Z170A PC Mate? This one is around the same price.

One thing I notice is that you are going MicroATX in a case that is an ATX case. Maybe you would want to go with something smaller...?

Or with an ATX board, you would probably have some more choices...How about something like an ASUS Z170-a...?

Why have I been missing out on M.2, it seems like the bees knees.

I can go from my 450 mb/s read & 450 mb/s write SSD to a 1400/1000 M.2? Where the hell do I sign up!?

Is there some major downside I'm not seeing?

Cost is the only downside, since the performance won't be massively noticeable.
Remember the HDD random 4K read was 0.1MB/s. A mid range SSD hits 50MB/s random 4K read, so it was a humongous increase compared to going from SATA SSD to M2 SSD.

You're going to need an LGA 1151 board that supports DDR3, of which there aren't as many. Here's a budget one.

I see a lot of Windows 10 keys on ebay for $20-$25. Are they legit or am I just asking a seller to scam me? It seems a lot cheaper than paying $85+ for a copy on Amazon or at a store.

I've got another question, which might be considered silly since I don't have much experience building computers :p: my current PSU doesn't have 8-pin connectors, it only has a 6-pin adapter and a few 4-pin adapters unused. Is it safe to use a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter? or one of those 2x4-pin to 8-pin adapters?

Thanks!

Hi guys, I'ld like some advice on a video card please.

Most of my gaming is done on PS4 but I would like a computer that runs a few exclusives that I care about such as X-com 2 and CIV VI as well as a steady stream of lightweight indie games like Infinfactory or Legend of Grimrock 2. I was thinking something like a Geforce 960 would work well but maybe even that card is overkill for my needs.

Thoughts?

I currently have a chinese 2560x1440 monitor which I'm looking to change up. I can either go for a Samsung 4K uhd U28D590D for $250 on Craigslist used or a Dell 2560x1440 G-Sync monitor S2716DG for about $380.

I currently have a 980ti. Not sure if I wanna go to 4K or for g-sync. Any suggestions?

There are 8 ports. 2 x USB2.0, 4 x USB3.0, 2 x USB3.1

I can't really find any other motherboard with more than 8 USB ports.

EDIT: A couple of Gigabyte motherboards have 10-11 ports. But it seems that 8 is the norm.

EDIT2: Oh, you wrote -A. That one has 6 ports.

For now, I'm gonna use my current 970 and will look into getting a 10XX card later in the year, I'm also gonna take one of my 2TB hard drives from my current build that I use just for video storage.

The two mobos I am currently considering are

ASUS Z170-A

and

MSI Gaming Z170A G5

so between these two which is more preferable, I'd imagine they are both pretty similar in what they can do. Or is there something else in the price range say give or take 30 dollars that is better?

Just kinda contemplating this all.

So I'm upgrading my 2012 sff build in an ft03 case.
This cases's whole deal is the GPU is mounted vertically and the case has one giant 140mm fan on the bottom pulling heat in. It uses the blower on most reference designs to suck the heat out of the top.

I'm moving my GPU to an external daughter case witha PCI riser cable since the new cards are too big and hot for this case. Which is gonna give me some interior room to play around with which wasn't there before. I'm thinking right now that I'm going to get an all in one cpu watercooler. So in addition to a shiny new GTX 1080 I can finally take my i7 3770k well past the 3.6ghz its been running at for the last three years.

My plan is to flip the giant fan over so its blowing out the bottom and I'll mount the radiator above it with one of the supplied 120mm fans on top pushing air through. Will likely require a teeny bit of custom mounting work but shouldnt be too crazy.

So after much back and forth over the weekend I have successfully put together my new PC.

Very happy with the results.

i5 6600k
ASUS Z170 PRO Gaming
16 GB DDR4 3000
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

Was able to re-use the extra storage that I had as well as the case and PSU from a previous build. Also had an extra heat sink(Cooler Master 212) that I never got around to using before.

Now just waiting to get my 1080 EVGA FTW in the mail

My first build since 2011 :)

Forgot all the "joys" of little things going wrong that you can't predict. But was able to overcome

I still can't decide for a CPU cooler so I can OC my CPU, what do you recommend that's in between $80-$100? either normal fan or water cooler.

edit: And something messed up the dll in the first place. Could still be something driver related but I'd also recommend to search your other hard drives for maleware/a virus with something better than a freeware tool ( Malwarebytes seems to be okay, still going with a proper (and good) licensed programm is always recommended)

What would you recommend? I've always used free stuff in the past like AVG or Avast. I've heard good things about Kaspersky but I have no experience with it.

Seems expensive. Any absurdities here that I can cut? Trying to create a monster aircooled computer.

Regarding monitors in OP:

It seems the G-Sync DIY kit is no longer available.

What about the Acer Predator X34? No mention. Also the Dell Gsync Monitor?

The whole monitor section needs reworking, but there is probably some stuff releasing soonish so it's on hold.

That actually seems about right cost wise for a high end gaming build. You have one of the most expensive cards on the market plus one of the more expensive monitors. Those alone add ~50% of the cost to the build.

You're right on the bulk of the cost. I think I'm going to shave down on some of the overkill stuff:
- No optical drive
- Cheaper memory
- Storage drive
- Mobo

If you want to cut costs here and there, those are definitely some suggestions. Others I would make include:

- Cheaper PSU. You can go bronze or gold rated and save another $30+ easily.
- Buy a Windows key from Reddit for $15-$25.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Just bought the CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 8GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Desktop Memory Model CMK8GX4M1A2400C16 aka RAM to start with on building my pc thanks to Abstrusity giving me a list of what i need to build a PC.
Will be buying more parts over the coming months

This is the kinda stuff to PM since I threw the OP together. They'll be a rework before 1070 launch when more pricing info comes into the clear, then again for the AMD 480.

The X34 is $1k+ and I don't think it has a place.

Nah I just dont know anything

So, I'm a first time builder. Haven't even had a PC in years, I've stuck to my Macbook. I have a ~3500 budget, but I'd really like an Acer X34 Predator and a decent mouse and keyboard so that cuts it down to about ~2200ish.

I'd like to be able to comfortably play AAA games (Witcher 3, Fallout 4, etc.) in ultra settings on the X34, and also on my 4k Vizio M-55, preferably at manageable framerates. I also need this to be a workstation PC—I'm a science student and I need a lot of power for crunching numbers, making multimedia projects, etc.

So, about the build. First off, I know 32gb is widely recognized as being stupidly unnecessary for gaming, but I put it in there for the workstation part, and to future-proof a bit. Similarly, I know most people don't think optical drives are valuable anymore. I'd still like to have it there as an option for me to buy physical games or to watch blurays.

Mainly I'm looking for feedback on my case, cooling, motherboard, and PSU. I'm still torn between the Fractal R5, the Cooler Master Pro 5, and the Enthoo Pro/Luxe. I want to maximize cooling performance, but also keep it as quiet as possible, and I don't know which one of those cases will best help me do that. I'm also super paranoid about cooling due to my being a first-time builder. That just seems like the part that can go most wrong to me. I don't think I'm going to be comfortable unless everything in the case is running 20º under spec. Hence the AIO cooler.

Also, the motherboard and PSU are both probably way overboard, but I built it planning on adding another 1080 after a while (or maybe immediately, depending on what people think I need). I also like some of the features like built-in ac wifi, enhanced sound, and one click overclocking on the motherboard. Honestly I have no idea if I would ever actually need a 1000 watt PSU, but I wanted to leave room for overclocking two graphics cards and a CPU, and everything else that I would put it in.

Last question, should I wait around and try and go for one of the new processors that were just announced (6900, etc.) or is the difference not really worth it? If I did that, would I have to change anything about the system besides the mobo?

Thanks everyone! I'm here to learn so all comments welcome!

I went with kaspersky but Norton and trend Micro also seem to be good.

right now this is what I'm aiming to build down the line...

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH
RAM: G.Skill TridentZ DDR4 2x8GB @ 3200 MHz
GPU: GTX 1070 (depending on which 3rd Party card is better...hopefully getting this in the Summer)
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 850W (could possibly go with the 750 but the price difference isn't all that much)
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO (either 250GB or 500GB)
HDD: 2TB (probably by HGST or Toshiba)
Case: Fractal Design Define R5

still a ways off from me being able to do this but any thoughts?

That power supply is overkill unless you'll be doing SLI some day. Your specs would have plenty of margin on a 650W supply.
