anybody else order a "Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 SSD" in early January, which has been put on back-order? Why the heck are we all waiting, why are they out of stock everywhere? When will they be in stock again...

Not the 960, but I quit waiting for Amazon UK's 850 EVO M.2 and purchased a PM961 M.2 from a specialist retailer.

Right, but it seems like every case is designed to support radiators and such as well. I'm just curious if something that supported air cooling only would be advantageous in any way, like maybe a smaller form factor or lower price.

Radiators have the same mounting holes as fans. So it really doesn't change the basic design of a case that much. Just find something that you like the look of. Cases are a very personal choice. You could look in to the Corsair Air series, they're ventilated, support a lot of different cooling options, and are easy to work with. The Fractal R series is also nice, with sound dampening and clean lines.

If you want smaller form factor, there are mATX and mITX cases that are smaller than ATX cases. Both the ones I mentioned have smaller versions.

You really can't go wrong with what you pick. If you have some that you like the look of, ask us about it, maybe there are other suggestions that look similar, but have better features and/or price.

Bought mine at a local computer shop the day the Z270 boards came out. They had plenty. One is currently sitting in my PC:

No idea why they seem rare now :/

a question about the placement of M.2 drives on motherboards...

most motherboards now come with two M.2 sockets...one on the bottom and one under the CPU/above the first slot for graphics cards

If you have a cooler like the NH-D15 and a graphics card installed are there any risks with installing the M.2 drive in the top socket? (like too much heat)

i was watching a video recently about the temperatures inside the PC case. one of the hottest parts is the GPU backplate so if the m.2 drive is near that then yeah it's gonna catch a lot of heat. i'm not sure if it's really anything to worry about though.

edit: the video was this one https://youtu.be/vc1UBZM4egc?t=282

The CPU (i5-6600) I've been waiting a week for, arrives, and it is unboxed and wrapped in used bubble wrap... Fml. Returning this shit. PC build delayed by another week. One component holding me back and it's killing my fun. Purchased directly from Amazon btw.

as new? did you by any chance purchase an OEM version? my 6700K came in a little black box with a bit of foam in it. if you want it in the official packaging then you buy the retail version. i just went with OEM because it was about £20 cheaper and i don't care much for boxes.

New. The listing even says it comes with a fan and the reviews refer to it.

It also looks like its had thermal paste scraped off it. Sketchy af and I am returning it no question.

I bought a Evga 500w white psu for my old i5 2500k computer and the fan on it sounds a little rattling.

I then notice that the 220v connector for the psu makes this lovely bzzzzzz sounds when touched. The fitting in the connector of the psu is loose.
These things can start a fire.

The cables feels like low quality. Not near my old 600w psu and the connectors for some of the parts are bad fitting aswell (cpu power for example)

If someone is thinking of buying evga 500w white I would recommend looking at something else.

Did not even bother open it up to check if its got good brand on caps. Im sure it will not have that.

Yikes. Budget line I'm guessing? I would replace that soon if you haven't already.

Whew, finally finished the office pc for my parents using my old parts and just a few new ones.

i7 2600k
Asus p8z68 pro gen3
16gb g.skill 2133mhz ddr3
Cooler master hyper 212 evo
Pny gtx 1050
Seasonic platinum 660 psu
256gb Samsung 840 Pro
160gb Intel 320 series
Fractal Define R5 Blacked-out Edition with Aerocool DS fans
Samsung DVD burner
Windows 10 pro

A very silent machine and looks great. Most of the parts I already had. They basically just check their email and surf the web so the gtx 1050 is plenty for them. The psu and case should last even when it's eventually time to upgrade the machine again. Very happy with the way it turned out. :)

Need some help with a RAM trouble shooting scenario. I've got 6 DDR2 2GB RAM sticks that are all from the same brand and should be identical. Unfortunately they do not play well together. Only two of the six sticks will work in tandem, the remaining four sticks will only work if no other sticks are inserted.

I know using RAM from different brands can be iffy, but these sticks are all the same. The system is old, but I updated the BIOS to the latest version (2009). I did not get into computers until the DDR3 days where RAM is more plug and play friendly and a BIOS flash fixes 90% of incompatibility. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Could be that certain ram slots on your motherboard have issues. You'd have to do some testing to be sure. Also maybe try running memtest when you can get them to boot to help you figure out if any particular sticks are borked?

Anyone have any advice on selling a custom built PC? Kinda in a bind and need to sell my PC. Would it be better to sell it piecemeal or all together?

As far as pricing goes I've read that its best to see how much it would cost to buy brand new and knock 30% off that since its used. Is this right?

I can't get anybody to give me any information(reached out to Fractal and Gigabyte) about putting the Extreme gaming 1060 in a Fractal 500 case. Need to take a look at the measurements closely but that card is so tall I'm worried about conflicting with the case side.

Case spec
Graphics cards up to 310 mm in length (note: graphics cards longer than 170 mm will not fit with PSUs that exceed 170 mm)

1060 Xtreme
281mm length

You aren't going to have an issue.

Length isn't the issue lol but the height from top to bottom. It's a Zotac type tall card.

Based on what video I can find it should fit, thought it might be a bit snug in all directions.

Apologies if this isn't the right place to put it, but I just upgraded my Dad's PC with:

i5 7400
Gigabyte B250M-D3H
Gigabyte GTX 1050
8gb(2400) ram

The case, power supply and hard drives remain from the previous version, which was fairly old(the DVD burner was connected via an IDE ribbon cable, natively). Did a fresh format and install of Windows 7, but it's performing kinda badly. Windows itself keeps soft freezing for moments at a time, just navigating the OS. I'm trying to do Windows Updates as well, but it keeps getting stuck on installing an update, every 20-50 or so, forcing a hard reboot.

My initial thought was that the hard drives are old and slow-ish and are being a big bottleneck, but it wasn't a problem before the upgrade. It later dawned on me that maybe it's a clash between Win7 and the new 7th Gen processors, which research leads me to think could be the problem. Unfortunately I can't find any info other than Intel and Microsoft making the deal to be Win10 exclusive, and will eventually lock out updates?

Could this be the cause of the bad performance?

Kabylake doesn't officially support anything before Windows 10. It's not strictly impossible to run, but there's no proper drivers for it.

Ryzen 8-core CPU is releasing February 28th. Worth waiting until then if you can before upgrading to an expensive Intel HEDT 8-core or 6-core.

Should be 1 other Ryzen CPU released on that date also.

Where did you get that information? I haven't seen anywhere where AMD has given an actual date.

Yea, that's more or less what I gathered. So would it be safe to say that it is Win7 "clashing" with the 7400 that's causing the garbage performance, yes? Is it possible that it could be anything else?

It's almost certainly what's going on. You might be able to find an installer for Windows 10 out around somewhere to force an update.

No point in going from a 970 to 1060. If you're gonna do it. then DO IT.

What kind of monitor do you have? Maybe it'd be a good time to upgrade to a G-Sync instead of a new video card?

Ok GAF, my i5 2500k fucking died, my caviar black drive died and my mobo died.

I haven't really paid attention to hardware in awhile so i have no idea what the fuck is going on (holy shit @ HDD sizes being so cheap), but I'm looking to get another 6 years out of a new build like I did with my old one. Here's what I'm thinking of so far...

CPU: Intel i7-6850K
GPU: EVGA GTX 980 SC (mercifully that didn't get toasted)
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5" SATA III Internal SSD
HDD: WD Black 6TB 3.5" 7200 RPM
Optical Drive: LG WH16NS40 Super Multi Blue Internal SATA 16X BRD Rewrite
PSU: EVGA Supernova 1000 P2, 80+ Plat 1000Q

That's about as far as I've gotten, I need recommendations for MOBO, Case, Memory, and CPU cooler...

Please tell me if I've done fucked up on any of my picks so far.

...yeah i figured i should just go hard and do the 1070.
and im actually looking into monitors at this very moment to take full advantage of said card.

any recommendations on where to start?
im looking blind and not sure what usual pricing is for these things

Asking again: Is an FX-8350 cpu good for video editing? Would it bottleneck a Radeon HD 7950?

Intel is completely out of the question here. The 8350 would go into an old AM3+ mobo I have.

It shouldn't bottleneck the GPU, but that being said. That CPU is very old.

Where did you get that information? I haven't seen anywhere where AMD has given an actual date.

AMD's doing a GDC seminar on how to optimize programming for Ryzen, so it has to come out by February 28 (when GDC starts) at the earliest:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11031/amd-set-to-launch-ryzen-before-march-3rd-meeting-q1-target

A guy from Overclock.net gave the forums the date. The guy is trustworthy so barring delays, it's pretty certain to release on Feb 28. In any case certain mobos have been confirmed to be releasing 'before March 28th' so not long to go now.

That's tough luck. If you can wait, wait for ryzen. I don't think the 8 cores part will be cheap, but it will competitive.

Right now you are better off with 5820k if you still can find one, else 6800k. Cause I don't see a reasonable reason for paying extra for the pcie lanes, fuck Intel

I have an X61 on an mini ITX and a X41 on another mini ITX. How do you know it's the cooler? Also don't get the 212 EVO. The X41 should work I doubt it's the cooler. What's your specs? More information on what's it doing would be helpful also.
