I've heard Wi-Fi PCI-E cards are more reliable and can get better speeds compared to USB adapters, although I don't know how accurate that is.

I think I'll wait on that and see where the modem will be at my new place. Maybe I can just run an ethernet cable to my PC if I can have it close enough.

I'm pretty much ready to pull the trigger. Just need to get my click ready on a card. Hopefully Amazon gets them in stock. By the end of July and beginning to mid August the cards should be easier to get right? Maybe some of the components will drop in price too.

Dunno if I should ask here: Moving into my new home and talking to the interior designer soon, how should I do my gaming room?

Hi,

Looking to build a new computer since the one I built around 6 years ago from this thread is going to be used by my family as a general pc. Tried following the Enthusiast Build and was hoping if these parts look alright, the ideal is that the build will be able to run games at max to high for around 3 years and then either overclock or run things at mid for another year or two before switching out parts.

Mainly going to be using the pc for gaming, but I will be doing some programming and potentially media intensive work down the line. I will be transferring a 2 TB HDD and a 500 SSD for additional storage to this build along with an unused copy of Windows 7 that I intend to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Also picked up a GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming for the graphics card.

Going with mainly Newegg because I don’t have to pay sales tax.

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/Pkv7Ps
Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/Pkv7Ps/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($314.99 @ Newegg)

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000G2 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($129.99 @ Newegg)

Thank you for any help.

Thank you for any help.

Good build, but 32GB is overkill. Stick with 16GB for now unless you're planning on doing heavy video editing or 3D modeling. Also, you can do 32GB with 2x 16GB on most higher end LGA 1151 boards.

Also, 1000 watt PSU is too much. You will be fine with about 650 watts. The 1000 is for people who plan on doing 2-3 way SLI/CF.

What's the paperclip trick?

I've never done an RMA before so I have no idea how to even approach it

I haven't had to do it myself but it's: http://support.antec.com/support/solutions/articles/1000015319-is-my-power-supply-dead-the-paperclip-test. Maybe google a bit to be certain.

How did you conclude the PSU is dead btw? Are you sure you didn't dislodge a cable somewhere, or forget to plug something in? It seems more likely.

For an RMA just contact the manufacturer. I'm sure they will have instructions/details on their website about the process.

Hi Guys,

need some advice, i dont know in which thread can i post this, and i dont think its a new thread worthy question..

so i work in a logistics company, we are setting up a command and control center to monitor truck movement, deliveries, dashboard that is connected to GPS and such.. now, my boss have already bought 6 42" LG LEDTV, and wanted to have different screen and dashboard in each TV.

now, my simple question is, how can i connect a PC to those TV and have a different display in each TV ? must i buy a workstation with vga card ? any other equipment i need ? im planning to buy a splitter, but i believe thats to clone display ? not to extend display to that TV (CMIIW)..

currently we are using 4 different PC that are connected to different TV, and its quite troublesome when we want to move cursor at particular screen and we must find which mouse is it, which keyboard is it that connected to that screen and sometimes we have to switch mouse receiver to other PC..

so yeah.. i think we will buy one workstation, but how to easily connect and extend my display (not clone) to 6 TV ?

Thanks for the advice, made the changes you suggested. Can't wait to build this thing when all the parts arrive.

Plugged everything in and tried turning on my PC and nothing happened. I then tried connecting my previous PSU with only the mobo cable and tried turning on the PC -- it booted up. I tried the same thing with the new PSU, connecting only the mobo cable and turning on the PC -- nothing happened.

Sorry for the questions, but can anyone help me troubleshoot an issue I have run into after like 4 hours trying to put the PC together. I got everything up and running, but I have ran into an issue. The computer just fails to read any discs for some reason. If you put one in the disc drive you can hear it spinning and making noise, but it won't load anything and if I go into "My computer" it doesn't show up. I then connected an external drive and that didn't read either. I don't have any internet on it because the motherboard disc drivers cannot be installed since it isn't reading anything and I cannot find out how to get it working. My thought process is that it might have something to do with the fact that I didn't wipe any data on the SSD/HDD so I just exchanged the CPU/Motherboard and rebooted it which may be causing some kind of conflict with the old drivers.

I think so?

I had a cooler master hyper 212 plus heat sink and it worked on my old i5 2500k and my new i5 6600k
Thanks! It ended up fitting without issue.

Try side loading drivers via USB?

You plugged the 8 pin ATX cable in too, right? I'd try the paperclip thing, and if it doesn't respond then call up EVGA.

So looking at this for my build. Any suggestions or swap outs? Most likely going to keep using my GTX 970 till a 1070 becomes easier to find. Thinking about buying a piece each week would the parts be alright sitting around? Going to be a huge cpu jump from my FX-4100.

Solid build. I would recommend paying the extra $20 or so for an i5 6600k CPU.

Doesn't have to be a gaming specific headset, just a headset for overall use.

I'm personally a fan of the Sennheiser 598SE's, great sound and they're open back so you can still hear yourself talking when using it to voicechat. Using a zalman clip on mic with it. Works wonderfully as a gaming headset and general use headphones as long as you don't mind some sound leakage due to being open back..

Take a look at this software solution :
mouse sharing

This let's you use separate computers with screens close to each other with one set of mouse and keyboard. It works almost as if all screens belonged to one.
I have only used it with two pcs that were next to each other but it worked great.

Looking at the situation with the 1070 and the availability, I was wondering if there's an AMD equivalent?
480 8GB for $230+ end of June, actually should be in the OP... oh fuck it's a typo in the last column. Welp, on the to do list.

You could use a KVM switch, where you plug the computers into the switch and then attach one keyboard and mouse to that switch? Then you just press a key combination to switch between computers.

Otherwise you could look at Matrox graphics cards which are designed for outputting to several monitors at once.

If it's lasted this long it'll probably be fine at 100%. Modern-ish replacement, your board probably supports the 3770k (check) but those are usually pretty expensive on the used market.

If you're planning on rendering stuff frequently and consistently, I would look into something like the 5820k/6800k.

Thanks. At this point I'm considering riding it out until it dies or I move (which I'll be doing probably within 6-12 months), so I'll re-assess CPUs at that time. Seems like an i7 would be the way to go though.

Hey guys, after teaching a couple of ESL classes I have finally managed to gather enough money to buy a 250GB SSD.

I will be picking it up tomorrow and I wanted to ask a couple of questions regarding the OS cloning process.

Knowing that I would be getting an SSD at some point, I split my 1TB HDD in two partitions, one is 80GB for Windows 8.1 and the other is my Data partition.

What is the best way to clone my OS partition onto a 125GB partition on the SSD without encountering any errors? I've seen people recommend the EaseUS Todo Backup utility, but since I have no previous experience on the matter I thought I should ask here first

I also plan on having another 125gb partition on the SSD for a Windows 10 Install, and dual boot between the two.

In case anyone asks, I am keeping 8.1 due to the free HFS+ driver since I also have a MacBook Pro, and the external I use has an HFS+ partition on it so I can transfer data, from and to the laptop. My plan is to eventually migrate completely to Win10 when it becomes more reliable.

Is there anything extra to do for dual booting or does it automatically work when installing 8.1 and 10 on the same drive?

Anyone got any insight? I just got the SSD and I am wondering on how to proceed.

(Let me know if I'm shitting this thread up too much with monitor deals; been looking for something to supplement my 34UM95)

Perfect pixel QNIX2710 is $199 on newegg flash. Normally ~250-270 on ebay for one with a pixel guarantee. Note that the response times are garbage, and overclocking it past ~90hz or so will make it drop frames.

Well, why are you buying a new motherboard? Is this for a new CPU/new build or what?
PCI-E lane got damaged during transit for a repair from the company that built it (Dinopc), so I'll most likely need to get a new one. Same build otherwise (i7 4770K). Would the Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI Be a good step up? Not looking for a major upgrade like an X99 motherboard, just a step up from my current one that's also got support for DDR4 memory.

That board won't work with your i7 4770K, you need an older LGA 1150 board. Something like this would get the job done.

Hi guys. I'm thinking about finally upgrading from my LGA 1366 rig with an i7 980, and just wanted to know what CPU I need to get to make this a worthwhile upgrade. I came into my 980x through a generous Dell system exchange, so I am by no means made out of money!

I was kind bouncing between the 5820k and 6770k, but wanted to know what Gaf thought. Hell, can I roll with my 980x a bit longer? I almost want more modern motherboard features than anything else, but gaming wise is there any real need to upgrade? Because that's what I really care about, and I can just save the money for a new GPU.

Are there any computer cases out there similar to the Cooler Master HAF 912?

Ive had it for 6 years but looking to build a new PC and switch things up soon.

I have a quick question:
Can I overclock RAM without overclocking the CPU? On an ASUS Z170 Motherboard, assuming a 2x8GB 3000mhz memory set is running at +-2100mhz. I need to make a secondary bugdget build so I'll probably have to go for an i3-6100. I remember Digital Foundry overclocking the RAM but that was back when the clocked CPUs could be overclocked thanks to a bug.

In terms of air flow or ease of building? A lot of cases started to drop the 5.25 after the NZXT S340 took off. But I think if you don't need as much storage space, the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M is about the closest I can think of in terms of similarity.
