I got the H100i V2 in an R4 mounted in the top
The R4 is just slightly wider and higher than R3 and have a different layout for fastening fans at the top.

You could try and set the radiator in the front. if that doesn't work, the R5 and R4 would be able to handle it.

After ripping almost everything out of my computer, it seems like the motherboard is the reason why I can't fit the cooler inside my case:

I'm afraid of wasting money on a new case if it means the motherboard will be placed in the same area creating the same issue.

So do I buy a new case, or is it a new motherboard?

(I currently have a i5-2500k, does a new motherboard force me into buying a new CPU and new ram as well? Is this stuff backwards compatibile between generations?

I keep seeing it saying everything only supports Socket this or that which seems oddly weird and not specially user friendly forcing a total replacement of everything if I just wanted a new motherboard or CPU)

In terms of air flow or ease of building? A lot of cases started to drop the 5.25 after the NZXT S340 took off. But I think if you don't need as much storage space, the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M is about the closest I can think of in terms of similarity.

More for air flow, I'm not concerned with ease of building.

General CPU/GPU question.
I have a i5-4670k with a GTX780. Was thinking of going to a 1070 when they're in stock and grabbing a Gsync monitor finally. Will I face any kind of bottle neck due ot the CPU? I'm not at home right now but I think I'm OC'd to around 3.7/3.8 on the CPU.

Thoughts?

Are the integrated graphics of the newer Intel processors decent enough as a general non gaming holdover until OEM 1070s are widely available? I want to get to building a gaming PC with a 1070 but really need a new PC sooner rather than later.

The only games I might think about playing in the meanwhile are the Torment: ToN beta, Wasteland 2 or PoE. Wondering if the integrated graphics would be able to do anything with games such as those.

You're fine. I would crank it up a bit, maybe up to 4.2ghz. But yeah, grab a 1070 if/when you can.

Can anyone possibly help me troubleshoot this issue? I spent 4 hours last night building the computer and couldn't get it fully set up due to this issue and then spent another 2 hours this morning and I still do not know what is going wrong. It really sucks because I have built a few computers before and thought I knew a thing or two and then I run into an issue like this and I am just left scratching my head and annoyed at how long I have spent working on it.

Everything boots up, all the lights look like they are on and I double checked my wiring and I can't see any faults. However, the CD drive isn't working right. It has power and if you put a disc in it'll start spinning really loudly, but the whole PC completely slows down and eventually freezes up requiring a restart. If you put a disc in and then turn the PC on it boots very slowly and then pretty much crashes until you take the disc out. Because of this I cannot install the Motherboard drivers or connect it to the internet.

I tried to install them through USB, but my Flash Drive and an External CD Drive both will not show up in "My computer". They show up in the BIOS and they work because I updated the BIOS through the USB drive, but they won't show up when Windows is running. I also cannot wipe/reinstall Windows 7 because if I try to run the disc through the external drive it says something like "The drivers cannot be located on this disc please specify a location with the drivers" and if I click the disc location it just says the message again.

Unplug the dvd drive, then can you boot up okay? Have you tried plugging the usb stick into all the usb slots? What about a different usb stick? You could also try a bootable ubuntu usb stick, see if you can copy the files over to the disk.

Another possibility is that you could flash the motherboard bios to the latest version, in case that helps, though I would try other stuff first just in case.

I'm looking at UK prices for a 1080 and they are £620 for a MSI founders and £750 for an EVGA founders. That is 900 dollars and 1070 dollars respectively.

who the fuck comes up with the pricing when they are supposed to be 600 US dollars to begin with.

It boots up fine with the DVD drive installed its just that if you have a disc inside when it is booting up it then crashes. I have tried installing the USB Stick and External Drive in all the ports to no success they simply aren't recognized in Windows. I have flashed the motherboard bios to the latest version. I used Gigabyte's "Q-Flash" software which let me do so in the BIOS which did recognize the USB stick, but it then vanished when Windows booted.

i5-2500k is LGA1155 socket. You need to looking for mother boards for this socket, they are not compatible between generations. MicroATX motherboard can be had ~$50.

Do you have a spare fan lying around, but smaller? You can just replace the fan, if you want to save some money.

No spare parts at all.

Would a larger case just result in the same issue, since the motherboard has to be screwed into a certain position?

Also what motherboard is worth getting? I can't seem to find any that can hold four blocks of ram in the micro department.

Would I be facing any issue with wanting to get the Vive eventually do you think? I'm just wondering how long I can go with my current setup before I want to rebuild for a new processor and DDR ram, etc.

You're fine. VIVE recommends i5 4590 and your 4670K is slightly better and overclockable.

You can buy one, a fan is usually cheaper than a m/b or a case.

yes, but then you may be able to move the radiator up a bit, depending on the design

No idea. 2500k is old ...

You know what, just remove the one fan blocking the motherboad, test run with prime95 see how it goes. You may not need it.

I think most of it is retailers profiteering due to lack of stock. The gigabyte G1 was about £550 on Amazon for a while, and others are a similar price. You should see most custom cards be <£600 once supply picks up

Yes, they are good enough for all of that - assuming you're talking i5 or i7. LGA2011 CPU's (5820K, 6800K, Xeon parts) don't have any integrated graphics.

True but £550 is still nearly 800 dollars though.

Right, I'm definitely going to be getting an i5 or i7 from one of the newer generations.

Cool, I guess I shouldn't have any reservations about getting started then.

The heatsinks on your MB might be a bit larger than mine, P9X79 Deluxe
The radiator might not fit in the R4 if they are, since there are no margins for me.
I would go with a new case that is larger than the R4

So I'm on the last leg of my PC building Saga... Microsoft Windows. I was searching online and saw a bunch of cheap OEM copies on Amazon, but the whole thing is very confusing.

Can I buy an OEM and install it on a freshly built PC? If not, where can I find a safe-source copy of Windows 7/8.1/10. There's a lot of places out there, and a lot of them look really sketchy.

That's what I want to know. I just want the product key and download. Don't need a disc.
I was reading around, seems like if you have a Win 7 or Win 8 PC and haven't upgraded to Win 10 yet, you can use those product keys on a fresh install of Win 10.

That said, I want to install Win 10 Pro on my new PC and it looks like my Win 7 Home key won't work. It's either Home->Home or Pro->Pro, can't really crossover.

Is there some sort of trick I don't know about installing SSD's? I just installed a 960gb SSD and it's showing up as a 120gb drive in my bios and now that I'm in windows it's showing up as 111gb (which is normal for a 120gb).

So what's the deal? Even the packaging says it's a 960gb ssd. Did I do something wrong?

I found a reddit post about the exact same thing with the same ssd - https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/4izb40/sandisk_ultra_ii_ssd_only_showing_120gb_instead/

Is it possible the manufacturer placed the wrong ssd in the box at the factory? I can't think of any reason a ssd would show up as 120 gb even after being reformatted. Leads me to question if the drive actually is 1tb

Already in the process of returning it. Not gonna deal with SanDisk SSD's ever again.

Hi guys. I'm thinking of getting into PC gaming (I'm currently all consoles), and with all the talk about the GTX 1080 and 1070, this seems like a pretty good time? I would primarily be interested in building something that could last me a good while without having to tinker with upgrading it too much too soon.

What do you guys think of this setup?

  • Power supply: Corsair VS550 550W KPC Bulk Edition
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-6500 Skylake
  • Motherboard: ASUS Z170-P, Socket-1151
  • RAM: Crucial DDR4 2133MHz 16GB (2x8GB)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition
  • SSD: Kingston SSD UV300 240GB
  • Storage: Seagate Barracuda® 1TB
I guess it's a no-brainer upgrading to 32 GB RAM rather than the 16 that's here?
What about the processor? Is the jump up from an i5-6500 to (for example) an i7-6700 so considerable that I should go big here instead?

Also, I feel like there are a lot more options and a lot more to consider when it comes to monitors nowadays: what would be a good monitor to get the most out of a rig along the lines of that above? G-sync, freesync and whatnot is getting me a bit confused..
Sorry if any of these are stupid questions, I bet many of them have been answered many times before, so sorry for the repetition as well.

So my 4770k with attached corsair h60 liquid cooler has starting reaching temps of 91c while gaming (was always around 67c before) ever since I made some upgrades to my PC and I'm not sure why the changes I made would cause this.

The only things I changed in my PC were my power supply and I attached an evga hybrid liquid cooler on my GPU. Although to install the GPU cooler I had to move my CPU radiator from the top center position to the top front of the case. Friend of mine claims the CPU radiator isn't getting enough airflow now in its new location but I'm not so sure, its location isn't that far off from where it was before and the temperature rise since the upgrades is insane. Here is a quick paint diagram I made to illustrate the airflow situation in my case.

l6J2dDy.png

Already tried switching the CPU radiator fan from exhaust to intake and it didn't make any difference.

Was the label on the drive 1TB?

yeah

The only thing that looks concerning is the sticker on the box which looks like it's covering something else. But the box was 960gb on the otherside, everything seems cool.

I'm a bit disappointed Amazon wouldn't send me a replacement while I waited for this to return.

Is the 6700K better than the 4770K? I'd assume so, but this site shows worse results. Unsure if it's a mistake.

Look at the quote they have under the 4770k..

"The AMD A10-5800K APU hasn't been in the lead in any benchmark yet, but here we can see that it excels in graphics and had an overall score in Fire Strike of 1098, which is 20% faster than the new Intel Core i7-4770K processor."

Their GPUboss site is trash too, don't bother with it either. Look at real benchmark sites.

So I think my monitor is going out, as it has started to make a crackling sound (not form speaker as those are not plugged in atm). If it is going out I want to go for as budget as possible monitor while still doing a fair job, I will be mostly gaming on my big screen tv the monitor would just be a backup for when the wife wants to watch something on netflix. So for these reasons I am thinking about getting a monitor that is even cheaper then the bottom tier Asus listed in the op, the Acer s240sl. Please wise gaf direct me I would love to save the extra money, but I don't want to regret going even cheaper then cheap.

What's up with this supposedly water cooled card?
http://wccftech.com/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1080-xtreme-gaming/
When I check Newegg I only see an extreme card that has 3 fans.

Also, i5 6600k should be good for years right? I don't want to upgrade anything besides the video card for years to come.

It's probably not officially released yet.

And yeah, the 6600k should last you years. Isn't the 2500k like 5 years old now at this point?

A strange problem hunt popped up in my pc.
While watching a Youtube video the screen will freeze up in a weird way and the audio will start looping. Needs two restarts, the first time the gpu fans keep spinning at top speed and no signal will come up.
The strange thing is that temps seem OK and it doesn't happen while talking, only videos.
I have a 7950 with the latest drivers on Windows 10.

If anyone could direct me to any way to test the gpu, it would be great.

Sounds like the GPU is on the way out. Try rolling back to an earlier driver and see if it makes a difference.

The newegg app has a notify function on a per product basis as far as I can tell. I have it right now but I've never used it before.

Will I be bottlenecked at all if I t upgrade my i5 3570K cpu (overclocked to 4.2 I think) if I buy a GTX 1070 or 1080?

I won't be running games at higher resolutions than 1080p. I don't have any monitors or TVs higher than that (or plan on buying any anytime soon) and framerate is my primary concern.

I just swapped Mobos and my CPU. Everything worked just fine. No need to reinstall windows 10. Do I need to do a clean install or any old drivers I need to cleanup? Is my computer going to explode into a nuclear blast?

Is it possible the pump is running too slowly? Did you swap it from a 3-pin fan header to a 4-pin header? I don't use liquid coolers but AFAIK you want the pumps to run at full speed, so if you use a PWM fan header and don't set it to maximum you may run into trouble.

LilJoka and kennah will know more than me about this though, fo sho.
