I plan on doing a diet that simply involves not eating.

I did the same thing like 6 years ago. It wasn't planned but I just developed a bad eating habit. It was when I first moved out.

All I would eat is toast with cheese and ketchup, basically. Sometimes I would get a Pizza. I ate like once a day, sometimes even less. I lost 50 pounds in under 6 months. I also fainted twice, but hey. Whatever!

I did a diet almost identical to this, and it was super effective....

...only I called it 'being incarcerated'. Between the stress of prison and the horrid food that was served, I barely ate anything for months. Lost a ton of weight. So, yeah, maybe the OP just needs to be locked up?
Hah I did a similar diet, only mine was called basic training.

OP I don't understand your thought process.

You will stop eating (or minimal required eating as you put it), and will try to lose mass amount of weight in the process.

Okay, so once you get towards your specific weight goal, than what's next?

You can't just not eat forever. An besides, why would you even want that? Eating food is one of the greatest gifts there are to live, and depriving yourself from this gift just seems so cruel and sadistic. Besides what will eventually happen?

You will most likely return back to your old eating habits, and probably retain the original weight in less time than it took to lose it.

Why not simply learn how to eat more healthier? Kick habits like drinking soda, or smoking to the curb! An why not learn to make a routine of at least walking/riding a bike/jogging around the block a few times a week?

It doesn't have to be drastic. Go to your local whole food grocery store (or whatever grocery store is most convenient), and just become EDUCATED and SMART with what your buying and putting into your belly. (Less processed food, and more veggies would be a good start).

An you surely don't need a gym membership with some rigorous exercising program to lose your desired weight either. Just staying active is a great place to start. Like I wrote above, simple stuff like walking a few laps around your neighborhood block. Perhaps going to the park and riding your bike for a few laps. Maybe go to your local YMCA and swim a few laps across the pool. Exercising doesn't have to involve sweating your ass off on a treadmill, or curling dumbbells, and doing squats.

Again, the point of all ^ that above, is that what your currently try to do is/will NOT be SUSTAINABLE..and obviously just not good for your body either. If you want to be slim, and fit, and most importantly healthy, than why not create a NEW LIFESTYLE where you can be slim and fit, not just for a few months, but for the rest of your life?

Before I start, yes it's a bad idea. I get that.

I currently weigh 220lbs. The easiest and best way for my to lose this weight would be simply to diet and exercise. I'm not doing that. I'm going to simply stop eating.

Most days I will not eat but in order to stay alive, some food needs to be consumed. These will be limited to items such as sandwiches or cereal and only once a day at maximum. Liquids and any drinks have no effect on this test. I will still drink tea and will still occasionally buy a can of Coke or similar.

Other notes:

  • I do smoke
  • I do work full time
  • I can't cook but do eat a worrying amount of take-away.

I also started a blog, just to get my progress down on paper. I also honestly believe no one will care but it's more fun with people pretending they're interested. :)

You can get heart problems doing this. Don't do this. Learn to cook and start exercising. Eat less and take in your recommended calorie intake a day and your body will start using body fat to make up for it.

The way you're going about this is dumb.

It is possible to fast and quickly drop weight, but it requires planning and hard work.

Have you ever heard of Brad Pilon? He's a diet guy who's in incredible shape (http://www.fatburningman.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/pilon.png). He advocates taking one or two 24 hour fasts a week as an easy way to cut down on caloric intake. Tons of people have followed his advice and gotten great results from it.

If you're hellbent on fasting, go buy his book 'Eat Stop Eat' (www.eatstopeat.com) and read it in its entirety. If you can't afford it, you'll be able to find a million and one places to download it by searching on Google. As long as you follow the advice he provides, you'll be able to fast in a healthy and safe manner.

John Berardi, another notable diet guy, wrote a free book on fasting, too. You can find it here - http://www.precisionnutrition.com/intermittent-fasting. It's got a lot of great information about how to fast in a safe and healthy manner inside.

it's probably been mentioned, but losing a lot of weight quickly will leave your body looking terrible for quite a while. It will take awhile for your body to adjust and you'll look awkward for months.

As a humerous counter-point, a friend of mine did 4 months in prison and every Friday he bought 7 big packs of biscuits from the prison shop, and ate one a night. He had the fair enough idea that he should just do whatever it took to get through and he could worry about the weight afterwards.

There was a 3 week gap between visits and, my god, the amount of weight he'd put on. I've never seen anything like it. It came off again pretty quickly once he was out!

My family has told me I was anorexic but I don't recall that at all. I think I'm being gaslighted or in deep denial. Apparently there's a connecting between memory loss and eating disorders so be smart, OP.

Qutting smoking would probably make more sense than food. Once you've done that you'll have the energy and motivation to diet and exercise properly.

Insted of eating nothing. just eat nothing with lots of carbs. believe me, the effect will be the same, but you can still eat meat, vegetable, eggs, nuts etc. in any quantities you desire.

i didn't eat for 3 days and lost 5 kilos. it's called fasting and is actually healthy to the body. just drink water, after day 2 the hardest you'll lose your appetite. The digestive system shuts down and starts to use the unused energy to start healing. You can easily do this for 7 days. i wouldn't suggest more than 10 days though...

Starvation is bad, OK?

Weight loss is largely a matter of reducing calories and increasing activity. So if 500 fewer calories a day than you need to maintain is good, 2000 less is better, right? Not really. Because below a certain threshold, your body thinks you are one of those starving refugees on TV, and does a bunch of things that hurt your long-term weight loss.

Read that again: starving is a bad way to lose weight.

Why this is so:

- Your metabolism slows down. Your body will burn fewer calories to maintain itself, and you will feel awful. This is bad for weight loss because as soon as you quit starving yourself, you'll gain weight fast because your metabolism has bottomed out.
- You will tend to lose muscle more than fat. Your body will naturally try to conserve fat and cannibalize muscle if it thinks it is outright starving. This is bad because your real goal is FAT loss, not weight loss. This is how you have people who lose 100 pounds and reach their "ideal" weight, but still look amazingly flabby. Also, losing muscle slows your metabolism down even further, amplifying the giant horrible rebound effect once you quit starving yourself.
- Your life will be a living hell. You'll eventually feel horrible, the diet will fail, and you'll binge eat and regain everything you lost, plus interest.

Real bad idea.

So what you really plan to do is commit suicide?

Your suicide will be very painful, angstridden and drawn out

Not a good idea

You are fat because you are lazy and dumb, all signs point to that in your OP.
Educate yourself and talk to a doctor and dietitian. Find ways to stay motivated.

Nope. Nope nope nope.

After like 30mins after every meal - or the biggest ones - have water mixed with lemon and drink that.
I eat five fruits or vegetables a day, you can try it too. I am not doing it for diet tho. Just for health.

I'd rather you spare some time to walk and dissed the soft drinks, that's plenty enough to lost you a few pound.

Don't starve yourself.

Is that healthy? People already complain about my unhealthy eating habits simply because I usually don't eat before 4pm (just drink coffee and water) and sometimes I only eat a bowl of cereal a day and nothing else.

Though it's not like I'm on a diet. If I want have pizza then I'll just have pizza. When I go out with friends then I turn into a moster that will just consume whatever food is available. I'm healthy according to my doctor.

I do pretty much the same thing as OP except I bike everywhere and take fentermine and vyvanse to make the hunger pangs go away. I also bike everywhere, since I'm too poor to afford a car, food, or bills.

I've lost about 40 pounds in the last six months.

Are you mad?!

Just beat healthier. Sub a mean salad for when you are going to eat a burger or something. Quit smoking and stop drinking junk for a while (just drink water and OJ).

You said you may change your diet based on our advice, yet you know starvation diets are bad and everyone on GAF is backing that up. Clearly you're a too much of a stubborn idiot to listen or think so why should I waste my time reasoning with a brick wall?

Not interested in hearing your results either, I already know: a few months from now you'll be fatter, weaker, less muscular, less healthy and feel worse than you do right now. Have fun.

Christ, you're giving up all food except occasional sandwiches and cereal? If you're going to cut food, you might try cutting just grains first! They certainly shouldn't be the last to stay. Carbs and empty calories are probably a major contributor to your weight. When I gave up grain, I lost ~20lbs. I did nothing else. No extra exercise or dieting. Just cut the grains. You might try that. You need protein to survive, you need nutrients to do well. Cutting both of those is idiotic and fatal. Eat beans or quinoa and eat vegetables.

How lazy do you have to be to think of the dumbest idea to weight loss is to do absolutely nothing, and hope your body adjusts?

Hope you like being even more out of shape once you starve yourself.

I kind of did this and it is a terrible idea. You will feel a thousand times worse than you do now, become extremely irritable, and gain all the weight back once you start eating like a human being again. I'm also pretty sure it causes hair loss, and just ages you prematurely in general.

This is me before:

This is me after starving myself:

I look about 10 or 15 years older. Which of those is the more flattering picture? Don't do this. You might permanently injure yourself, and you will certainly not be a more beautiful person because of it.

I look normal enough again, now, after choosing diet and exercise instead:

But this is a really stupid idea, and I speak from experience. I did it because my then-fiance was calling me overweight. Don't do this for any reason, there are no good things that can come from it. Trust me.

I did this a few summers ago... gained it all back and more!!! Now I am using MyFitnessPal and training to run a 5k and losing much slower than before. I was seriously on the verge of it becoming a disorder -- I would freak out if I didn't see the scale jump daily... this is not something you should do!!!

I know a girl who used to puke after she had food, She lots lots of weight.

Not eating does indeed work.

That's kinda low

Like borderline starvation low

Not good for the long run either

I say 2000

If he's not doing any exercise then 1,500 is probably a good number if he's insisting on not being very healthy while trying to lose weight.

OP, I'm not sure why you made this thread other than to advertise a blog. You basically intimated that you were going to do something and left no room for other suggestions. This thread is full of excellent advice that you'll refuse to take and instead choose to do your body more harm than good.

Bravo.

Stop being a colossal fool and feed your body good things - as opposed to starving it. You will look malnourished, drained and disgusting and if your desire is to lose weight, I'm under the presumption that you want to look and FEEL good. If you don't exercise or eat right, you'll indeed lose weight, but your skin will sag and you'll look like a bin bag full of shit and I know you don't want this man. A sensible diet with a good exercise programme will make you thin AND sexy.

At this point I'm pretty sure he's just trolling.

Yeah man this is a great idea!!!!!

Not.

My mom recently started a diet having only access to shakes. Well I just told her to do more exercise and eat healthy. But she doesn't want to do that. Sure shakes can help you lose weight but I'm not convinced a diet is a good way to go. Just some more exercise.

I agree with most of the posters in this thread on this likely not being a good idea. Just cut out the bad things in your regular diet. I've been back at home for the last year after college and have lost 30 pounds just eating home cooked food most nights instead of things like fast food. I've recently started dieting myself, along with exercising, but just cut out all soft drinks and other bad things. Drinking water to replace other drinks does wonders.

If you want to do something drastic and fast just switch to water, fruit and vegetables only. Jesus man you want to die?

I did a diet once where I was eating fruit for lunch and having a beer for dinner. I lost a TON of weight. But it eventually came back.

Doing it with basketball everyday and a proper diet for like 3 months now, I'm not only losing weight, I feel stronger, which is better than feeling just lighter.

But this can work. Whatever works for you. Ignore the calorie counters/fitness know-it-alls. Everybody's body is different, metabolism, everything. While some things will work for everyone, some crazy things work for certain people while seemingly insane to other people. Listen to your body!
But some kind of exercise and lots of water are essential.

The only flaw in this plan is that it takes more willpower to not eat than it does just to walk everyday.

Piggybacking on this thread, anyone do meal replacement bars/shakes? Was thinking of doing them for lunch every day. Do you eat a solid breakfast, have one for lunch, then eat a bit dinner?

Right now I'm doing a bit of fasting so I skip breakfast, have a salad for lunch, snack on almonds and string cheese, and have a solid dinner.
