I think Action Resident Evil is still on the cards due to it's worldwide appeal

I love RE7 and I hope for more like it.

That said, I definitely would not mind an action focused Resident Evil title. I enjoyed them. Even if we swap genre styles for the mainline titles, I would be okay with it.

Just make sure it's scary please.

RE7 hits the bargain bin faster than RE6 tho. In just a month it went straight to $40.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/resident-evil-7-discounted-to-40-today-only/1100-6448354/

Also people got the wrong ideas of Action Vs. Horror the whole time. It was never about that. It was actually always about a good quality, well designed, and fun game. You make that and it will sell. That's the reason RE6 sold a truckload more than RE7.

As for the topic, Action horror for RE8 like RE6 will do just fine and for sure will be on the cards. Even Capcom realized they made a mistake on RE7 that's why the bare support for it post release. Also you can count on the return of beloved RE characters to be playable in the future.
Uhhh... You do realize Capcom has two major DLC expansions in the works for RE7, right?
Resident Evil Revelations is for action. And games like Umbrelal Corps...

No.

Revelations 1 and 2 are weird half measure games that try to appeal to both camps which imo don't work (People can obviously enjoy them, but from my point of view I always see the horror camp elevating those titles higher than any action fan would). Both Rev titles offer less action in their campaigns than RE4 does in my eyes. Rev 2 added more mechanics compared to Rev 1, but then went and took away the more action set the pieces (like the terragrgia flash backs).

I've said before give me Horror like RE7 and other classic titles or give me action like RE4-6. Focus on what you want to do rather than trying for a half measure. I'd rather have all eggs in one basket to make said game the best rather than trying to spread thin to appeal to everyone.

Regardless of that I'm curious to see what is next. From the rumors as of late, we might see a RE title before RE2make

I hope not, that'd be another decade of me passing on their games.

Personally I stand by my stance that there is room for both. Everyone might not like every title in the series going forward due to their tastes, but they could at least go back and forth on pleasing both camps.

How do you see RE2 and RE3? They seem pretty clearly more action oriented than the first game to me.

RE4 also seems more survival horror-y to me than RE5. (Haven't played 6).

IDK. I don't think it is clearly two trilogies, personally.

That would be ideal.

I mean look at it this way, when RE4 was being developed, they goofed around and found a crazy gameplay thing that worked and shifted that into DMC. When they got the idea to suplex and spin-kick a zombie, why didn't they just make that a new game? They were clearly open to doing plenty of spin-offs, they could've carried on that way. Instead they alienated a lot of people.

The Devil May Cry thing happened because that was one of the first versions of Resident Evil 4. By the time Mikami was working on the Resident Evil 4 that we've come to know, Capcom's higher ups had lost patience with all the aborted RE4 prototypes and demanded that Mikami and his team finally release Resident Evil 4. And Mikami (the original creator of the series) decided that if this was his team's last chance, there was no point just iterating on the tired, six-game-old original formula.

I think there's room for both and hope that they don't take the series as a whole back to action.

They can have a team that makes the action games a la RE4/5/6 and then another team that focuses on the more survival horror style games like RE1/2/3/7.

This seems like a no brainer to me, give both crowds the style of games they want from the RE series and make the most money, win win.

RE2 and RE3 despite their more action focus (especially 3). To me still fall into the classic/horror camp. RE2 can still have such feelings on your first playthrough same as RE3 on hard.

RE4 definitely is more SH than RE5. Due to its item management and dynamic difficulty which makes every battle intense.

I still see them as clearly marked but there's obvious signs as to why things progressed how they did. It's why even despite the drastic changes I'd consider all RE games RE. they all share things that aren't just lore.

Wait, re6 was rhe first Capcom game to cross one million. That's like impossibly impossible

It's the first Million Seller on steam

Well he has The Evil Within 2 coming out soon and that's certainly closer to the roots than RE4 and anything after.

Yep, action RE is awesome, and I hope we get more games in that style in the (not too distant) future. Same for classic RE.

I don't know what Capcom plans for the franchise, but personally I hope the RE2 Remake is in the classic style (and hopefully the RE3 Remake too after that) and RE8 is action like RE4-6.

I also hope we don't see any more RE in the style of RE7 ever again.

When RE8 comes out looking like RE7 most of us will rejoice. Moreover, we will enjoy feasting on the salt from the detractors.

I'd love an action Resi but I'd hate another RE6

Does that makes sense?

Yes, because many fans of action RE ended up hating 6. I very much enjoy 6, but that doesn't mean I'm oblivious to why others hate it. The game has problems, but it's controls and mechanics are not any of them. The games problems were its campaign design and level design along with general poor direction and bloatedness. If they can take RE6's gameplay and just build a solid directed campaign around it it has GOAT potential.

Anyway, I can only speak for myself, but yeah, action and classic RE >>>>>>>>>>>>> RE7

Agreed.

A new action RE that combined the gameplay mechanics of RE6 with a well designed campaign could be amazing.

Here's what you do:

Keep RE like RE7. First person makes things scarier and more atmospheric and RE is always at its best as a horror game.

Reboot Dino Crisis and carry over the RE4 gameplay. Camera angle, shooting mechanics, etc. RE4+ Dinosaurs. What's not to like?

Not sure how other fans of action RE feel, but besides the forced co-op the other thing I kind of dislike is the linear A-B level design. Like, the whole thing where you enter a new area and the only way forward is one single doorway that you and your companion have to open together.

I kind of wish RE would stick to level designs more akin to the Mansion or Police Station. Really large areas that you need to kind of figure your way through. Find keys and items that allow you to unlock more sections of the location. Whether the game is more action oriented or not, I feel like it can benefit from this kind of level design. But not sure how others feel about that.

So yeah, make co-op completely optional by not forcing an AI companion on me if I am playing solo and make the areas more like the Mansion or Police Station. Large areas to work my way through. Give me those two things and I will be very happy.

I want another horror VR game for Resident Evil 8. I don't really want the serues to go back to action Yet

Without spoiling, is there more of a story in RE7 than BOTW? I know it's less than RE6.

RE7 has more, but it's also a far smaller scale story, essentially being the story of Ethan, Mia and what happened to them and the bakers, making the main cast about 5 people total.

Um, than Zelda? I mean, I would say the story is a bit more of a focus in RE7, for sure. It's a very linear game as well, so the pacing of the story is much better, whereas in BOTW, you can just go do whatever for 100 hours. Still, really wierd comparison to make though, lol.

Nah, Dino Crisis reboot should have RE6 gameplay, IMO. Way better fit. Fast paced combat for fast paced Dinos.

Ehh... I mean, it could be could be cool, yeah. I think that kind of level design could potentially dilute the action oriented gameplay, though. The focus on more linear level design allows Capcom to pace the action well, and to focus on excellent combat encounter design. Puzzles, exploration, etc. could potentially distract from that. A bit of that wouldn't hurt in terms of mixing things up (RE4 wasn't hurt by a puzzle here and there), but I personally think the focus of an action game should first and foremost be on the action.

True, they could probably mix and match some linear sections with some more sections along the lines of the RE1 mansion. The Evil Within kind of did that with Chapter 9's Mansion area.

You're right. I forgot that you can't move and shoot at the same time in RE4. That said, the QTEs from RE6 shouldn't carry over to a DC reboot if they use that style of gameplay.

Bring back 3rd person main line RE please. RE4 middle ground more than 6...

I gotchu in the meantime fam

Hi, guys. I noticed I'm not able to begin new threads. I'm not sure what your policy is on bumping old threads, but I just wanted to chip in.

For me, I think RE8 may be a similar game to 7 if the similarities between 4, 5 and 6 is anything to go by, and 7 is doing well in terms of its sales. I'm personally not a big fan of first person viewpoint games, but 7 was still an endearing effort. The thing is, and I know some folk might disagree, but 7 to me was a good horror game, but I'm not sure if it quite fits having the RE name. Again, people are bound to disagree and that's fine.

I'm also a bit tired of Capcom focusing on too many unrelated stories in the games that may ultimately go nowhere, while using a classic character appearing in a limited capacity as a cash-grab attempt. Games with discontinued stories include Revelations 1 and 2, the movie Vendetta, and several others. Then when we wait years for a sequel or spin off to see the light of day, the game ends up being unrelated to the prequels yet again. This cycle gets to be so annoying, because it comes across as Capcom have just ran out of ideas.

I just played the games which were released for Nintendo Platforms, so I did not play 5,6 or 7. Resident Evil 7 looks interesting, but I have a bad time to associate it with the series, 6 to me looks a total mess and 5 coop thing never appealed to me and 0,1,2,3 and Code Veronica, were games that never appealed to me, but one interesting thing is that I always liked Silent Hill.

Anyway, 4 was the first game of the series that I played and like it, Revelations 1 and 2 too. So if they keep in this format, is interesting for me.

RE7 was the gaming disappointment of 2017 as far as I'm concerned, especially considering I was sold on the entire first person horror aspect of the game after the kitchen demo, i.e. a totally misleading product which the main game has very little in common with. What's wrong with RE7? Here's a checklist:

- not scary or stressful at all (when Alien Isolation nails it).
- puzzles were either non-existent, or actively stupid (I can only remember the birthday party/cake puzzle... which itself was ridiculously easy).
- no enemy variety (the black gooey creatures were worthless).
- the 'family' were clichéd to the extreme & worthy of a bad Texas Chainsaw Massacre horror remake on a shoestring budget. The scenario was putrid junk.
- weapon choice & upgrades were cheap & unsatisfying.
- graphics were hit & miss, with many low res textures hiding in plain sight.
- the game ended just when it was becoming 'slightly' more interesting
i.e. the entire shipwreck & mines sections were closer to old school resident evil

I could go on & on, but the worst part is when the game's most ardent defenders claim we're simply not willing to accept a "return to RE's roots" or the first person gameplay. That's not true at all, because it failed as a horror game, likewise it failed as a first person game. Why is RE4 cult? Because it's long, has great enemy variety, a great learning curve, great encounters, great puzzles, great weapon upgrades & loot, whilst most importantly it's fun, i.e. something RE7 is most certainly not.

I did like Resi 7 but 4, 5 and 6 I come back to time and time again. Mainly for the coop.

Hope we get a Resident Evil like 6 again. I loved the size of it, how the multiplayer worked (campaign crossover), the story, the combat EVERYTHING.

If they changed Chris and made him age backwards, what about Jill and other characters we haven't seen in ages? I'm somewhat worried now.

Some characters I want to see again, include:

Billy Coen.

I know he was just Rebecca's partner in 0 and nothing more, but it would be interesting to see where he ended up after he left Rebecca to go it alone in the woods. To me, he's like Heath in The Walking Dead.

Nicholai Ginovaef.

He's likely dead, but I think he might have somehow lived, according to a diary entry he composed in Survivor. I know that note wasn't in the original Japanese release, but there was an option in 3: Nemesis to allow him to fly away.

Natalia Korda.

Would be interesting to see if Barry can extract Alex from her. If not, it will be great to see an adult Natalia as a super villain, all amazingly attractive, poetic and highly intelligent, while people don't suspect a thing right away and she takes over a big corporation, and makes something of a new Umbrella. Maybe she'll kill Barry so Moira seeks payback. Barry is getting old mind you, and won't be around forever.

HUNK.

Besides battle modes, we haven't seen him since The 4th Survivor in 2. Unless you want to count The Umbrella Chronicles, or The Darkside Chronicles. But since that only recapped the story of how he got the virus sample, we've never had him in anything else that is canon. Was he supposed to be "Agent in 6 or was that just a generic soldier?

What was this 'Enhanced Veronica' game supposed to be about? I remember seeing it being announced a few years ago, but then nothing became of that. As far as spin off games are concerned: I don't think Capcom should let anybody else out there touch the franchise with a ten foot pole. You would have thought by now that they would have created a co-op based open world game, but we've never had that yet. However, I'd rather see games that Capcom themselves have worked on, because outsiders don't normally do a good job of adding anything unique to this series. Also, why do they bother to allow external developers to build upon non canon games if they aren't even a part of the main series anyway? It just seems really pointless to make games like Operation Raccoon City or Umbrella Corps if they don't go anywhere or even count as canon, but if it is spin off games they want to work on, they could further the Revelations titles. If we could have it done right, I'd love to see Shinji Mikami back on board in a major capacity. I've kind of learned to be grateful for small mercies as they say, but without him in the director's chair, I'm not sure what kind of a future the series will have.

There is definitely potential left for the series nonetheless, but I hate it how one story starts off, but by the time a sequel gets released, the story in the sequel seems to be totally unrelated to what happened in the prior game. They also chuck in lots of new people in every game that seem to only be part of the series for that one game, and are never mentioned again. Like, Josh, Carlos, Sheva, Ethan, Helena, Jake and more. You would have thought Sheva was at least important enough to have kept her around, giving that she and Chris took out Wesker in 5 and that took place so long ago. However, it seems she was just another Billy Coen type character that will never be used any longer. This seems to occur regularly in the franchise with so many other characters, too. It's not always a bad thing that they are adding in new ideas, but doing too much of that is a risky move. If it wasn't for Chris being in the last game, and the name being in the title, it could have easily been something different, because for the most part, it is something different. But there's a lot that they need to follow-up on, like the Natalia-Alex plot, the return of Billy Coen, wherever Jill is now, and so much more.

I'm sure Capcom won't even bother listening to us by this point, but yes, it is annoying when they add more stuff into the universe without resolving things from the past.
