[IGN] I’m Getting Bored of Every PlayStation Game Telling the Same Story

  • strong female with agenda/revenge in mind/something to prove
  • heavy cinematic presentation focus with light gameplay elements
  • open world with towers to reveal new areas
  • collectibles to find throughout
  • minor RPG elements with skill trees
same formula since 1999

So you didn't feel like you actually "PLAY" the game in TLOU or God of War?

That's precisely the point I'm making — they aren't one voice. Labeling them as "Xbox shills" is just a lazy way to dismiss the article rather than actually engaging with the content.

I've said this a few times already, but we are saying the same thing.

Fair enough. Wasn't trying to pester you. Just didn't get what you were saying.

At least they make unique games and honestly the IP they "milked" I like more then Sony's first party this gen.

I cant even think of single game I should be looking forward from them this year or next year.
Just like you can make the argument that Sony has had stuff like Returnal and Astro Bot. And no quotations marks on "milked", they are doing exactly that when we hear of 2-3 new Resident Evil remakes being in development right now, on top of the stuff that they have released this generation.
Giving others a pass for doing the exact same thing is just a biased opinion.
Unless that detachable drive is just for backwards compatibility.
If that were the case, it would only be sold as an add-on, and not be included with the console:
Identical to the PlayStation 5 and its detachable disc drive, customers will be able to buy the console individually as a "digital console", bundled with the PlayStation 6 as a "traditional console", or upgrade later by purchasing the detachable disc drive separately.

So you are saying that getting a bunch of DEI WOKE NPCS who all think alike to brainsotrm and write your stories is going to produce basically the same shit again and again ? .. well Im shocked... just shocked.

I too would like to see PlayStation develop new IPs and get more variety. But I understand they're a publicly traded company and they have a responsibility to chase revenue/profits. What they've been doing has obviously worked for them given they're making more money than any time in their history.

Also, they tried a lot of unconventional ideas in their VR space. There was a lot of "yeah, that was neat" type stuff, but nothing really hit big. They've also gotten behind some second and third party exclusives like Helldivers 2 and Stellar Blade.

What people are basically saying is they expect PlayStation to dream up several new tent pole IPs that can sell 10+ million copies, that have original story ideas, and/or have innovative game play mechanics. That seems like an unrealistic fantasy.

Lastly, now that Xbox is entering it's death spiral, they have even less motivation to try new things and take risks. All they have to do is coast and they know they'll have more former Xbox players entering the PlayStation ecosystem over the next 5 years. They don't have to worry about anyone else trying to compete with them for Call of Duty or Madden sales.

Why? Just because they're going to offer a SKU that has the drive included doesn't mean they are going to produce PS6 physical media. I think they probably will, but I don't think it's guaranteed yet. There are a lot of variables that are up in the air right now that could push them to decide it's all digital next generation.

I'm finally excited for some sony titles next year with Wolverine and Saros.

Capcom has put out plenty of new IPs this gen, but they've all bombed. I think pragmata will be their new hit though.

Somebody had to say it.
yep. this guy nailed it. the good news about the original last of us? it's an amazing, effective piece of work. the bad news? sony's major studios have been attempting to recapture that lightning in a bottle for most of 2 generations now. when you game in order to kick back & enjoy yourself, there's only so much grief & revenge you can stomach before you're ready for something a bit less relentlessly, endlessly 'tragic'...

I don't care for anything Marvel related and I didn't care for Returnal, so I'm not interested for Saros.

The only Sony game I ever liked this entire gen was Astro Bot and nothing else.

Nice engagement bait, IGN. Too bad I'm not giving you nor clicks, nor money with my comments on your social networks.

Fart-sniffing articles like these are a clear marker that outlet is rapidly losing relevance and profits.

I've written off PlayStation due to the samey type of games they are making these days, which is something I would have never thought possible 5 years ago. I was never in love with the brand, but rather the games they made. Now that the games aren't there, the brand means nothing.

I don't think they will offer a SKU including a non-essential feature that is not for use of PS6 media. These SKUs are usually cheaper than buying each one separately, and there's no reason to offer than when these are just for BC.
This is not a 'could or could not be' situation, it's a 'will be until proven otherwise'.

It's pure engagement bait. You are 100% correct! Are we supposed to act as if Astrobot didn't get a 94% Metacritic score and game of the year from many outlets just LAST YEAR!? DS2 and GoY released this year with 90% and a 87%. All 3 of those games are different, yet THIS is the conversation they want to have?

To think Days Gone 2 would have been out already. Would have been a early 2024 game.

People were shitting on John Garvin but he is absolutely vindicated now since he batted for his baby in Days Gone 2 while others at Bend and Sony were pushing for GaaS! What a disaster with that IP and that studio is on thin ice now.
I don't really get that SP vs GaaS angle. Per Days Gone's game director Jeff Ross, the sequl would've brought with it the Red Dead Online-style multiplayer experience that the studio had envisioned for the first game but weren't able to deliver due to the scope of that original entry already being a massive undertaking on its own.

Unknown.

Saints Row, FFXVI, Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin's Creed Mirage sold worse than expected. I'm sure PlayStation watched engagement and completion rates (among other metrics) for Days Gone that didn't excite them for a sequel. Will be interesting to see how Yotei does compared to Tsushima.

I'm currently playing Tactics Ogre Rebirth on PS5. The 3 games you mentioned are actually more similar in design than you let on. Games can do much more than ask you to navigate around predictable AI, from the 3rd person, in a 3D environment...with the occasional cut scene thrown in. There's some truth to the criticism.

I mean, haha I guess. But I have literally never read anything Jez said or followed him. I only even know he exists because of all the PS fans obsessed with him. I didnt say anything to cover for MS yesterday and criticized them heavily. IGN did too.

Just blows my mind that people are this sensitive that an article about PS on a major games website right when their only game this year is being released has to be framed as some Xbox psi-op. Anyone that believes that is genuinely a lunatic.

What does it need for a story to be "special"?

That's going to vary from person to person. The reality is a story and how good it is, is subjective. People loved The Witcher 3 and thought the story was great. I hated it. I came from the Witcher 2 which I loved and I was excited to finally dive into The Wild Hunt story line. Then what happens is I'm forced into side quest after side quest and stuff that's not related to The Wildhunt at all. I spent I think 25 hours just trying to find Ciri. I didn't signup to play The Witcher 3 to spend 25 hours trying to find people.

For instance I loved the story in E33 and thought it was special. I've seen other podcasters say they didn't like it especially the twist near the end. I think the story in KCD2 was pretty good but it wasn't so good I couldn't easily see something like Yotei surpassing it.

A lot of their games do come off as very similar. They're probably good games on their own, but in the context of Sony's lineup they blend together. The lack of variety is disappointing.

Damn, even IGN getting some common sense these days.

Though, they're probably talking about something other than men being written as inept dummies and women begrudgingly having to save them/show them what they are doing wrong..
Asmongold pointing their flaws seems working.

When all the studios have the same ideology and the top goal is to always please the shareholders this happens. Also big corporations do not take risk so they always play the follow the leader route.

The protagonist would 100% be Drake's daughter if Naughty Dog has any input. I'm not even saying that's a bad thing, but they're done with Drakes (and Joels and Jaks, for that matter).
I'd rather have a Sully & Sam team-up. But that is never going to happen with ND. Nor is the light-hearted charm and the Sully styled bravado humor of talking about "sweating like a hooker in church" or a girl being "a real spinner" (when banging her). They'd make them lovers, probably.

To be honest, I've felt like this since Uncharted 4 was released. Same boring crap in almost all of their 1st party releases. That is why Returnal and Sackboy were a nice change and even Ratchet and Clank (and obviously Gran Turismo) break that cycle a little. But Uncharted, God of War, Last of Us, Spiderman, Horizon, Ghosts of Tsushima etc is all basically the same shit. And I am frankly over it. Hence why I have made a major shift to PC gaming and haven't looked back.

I'm so happy most that played it disagree with you on the bolded lol.

Yep, many of the games being named in the article and here are games that sold over ten million copies. I've never understood the attitude that something should change because person A doesn't like it and fuck the millions who do - mind you, I think it's more of an issue when IGN displays this because of their reach and motivations (engagement, clickbait, etc.). Conversely, it's kind of expected for people to have strong opinions here since we're all passionate about games.

I'm honestly more exhausted with the games that handhold you for 10 hours+ with tutorials.

Can we please have a system wide option for "have you ever played a video game before???" that automatically skips all of that.

This is my biggest problem with modern gaming along with gigantic exposition dumps, and it's not specific to Sony.

STOP INTERRUPTING THE GAME WITH 3 PAGES OF INFO WHENEVER YOU INTRODUCE A MECHANIC

Devs need to go back and learn how to teach using gameplay and storytelling through the game world.

Half-Life 2 and BioShock are prime examples of games with great stories and gameplay systems.

Neither have a single cutscene after the opening nor ever "interrupt" gameplay to make you read a tutorial

We haven't had new entries on Uncharted and TLOU this generation, though?

I'm talking about Playstation games in general, not just this gen, hence why I mentioned my disdain for Playstation 1st party games since Uncharted 4 which was released on PS4.
