IGN Italy says the PS5 won't support 1440p

Dynamic resolution just has nothing to do with your display. The system itself determines the output resolution; dynamic resolution is the internal resolution the game renders the images at, which then get output at the resolution the system is set to.

This news is that PS5 has no ability to output a 1440p signal. Games might render at 1440p but the system can only output that as a 4k signal.

So the tv/monitor has to do the upscaling from 2k to 4k and not the console itself. Not much of an issue since a lot of TV's have pretty good up/downscaling. Not sure what the huge deal is then.

The biggest problem that PS5 will treat 1440p screens as 1080p screens you will get the worst IQ compared to
1080p and 4K screens .. If you only have 1440p screen you should probably not buy the PS5 or upgrade your
screen to 4K

Depends on your screen as say this LG 27GL850 1440p 144hz monitor you can set the PS5 just like the PS4 Pro to output at 4k and the monitor downscales it nicely to its native 1440p and looks really good in doing so

Xb1x was my main last gen for consoles. Because Sony is terrible at hardware and knowing anything about hardware. PS4 pro was stupid and I own one. As a PC gamer 1080p is too low of a resolution. 1440p is so much better. 4k is over kill and not worth the frame loss. 1440p 120+ fps has been perfect for years.

I was planning on having ps5's be my main consoles for me and my kids. 3x ps5's one for each of us. I was planning on playing my fps on my 1440p 165hz monitor. I pre ordered 1x series x because I didn't trust Sony as they are clueless about hardware and what is best.

I plan on using a console like a PC with M&k. If the game doe snot support mk i will use a xim apex.

this here. And thanks heisenberg for correcting. I love how outraged people can get about this and they have no clue what they're outraged about. I'm noticing a lot of anger here as nekst week approaches. Nekst gen and some nice eksclusives 11/12

The worst image quality here really is splitting hairs though. The quality of the panel is going to have as much impact as any upscaling downscaling in effect.

Oh so the k actually means 1000? I though that it's something else. Thanks, but still triggered that I did not assumed that, it's so obvious...
Yeap it means the horizontal resolution.
2k = around 2k pixels in horizontal (1920x1080)
4k = around 4k pixels in horizontal (3840x2460)
8k = around 8k pixels in horizontal (7680x4320)

8k is more like 7.5k but commercially and to have exactly twice the horizontal pixels of 4k it was used 7680 in 16:9 proportion.

Got it, thanks for elemetary level education. Feeling shame right now.

As a person who used a 1080p monitor for the PS4 in his entire lifetime, I can see a 1440p monitor person getting sad

Fuck. I was legit looking for a 1440p/144hz monitor to switch to for next gen.

guess I'll look for a 4k monitor instead

With firmware 1.8 PS3 upscaled DVDs, PS1 and PS2 games to HD resolutions. I'm thinking 1440p support will be patched in to PS5 if it's not currently there.

PS1 needed to have 240p support upscaling would have made things worse

PS3 can't do 240p at all...even the PSP could via comp...no excuse

It's not really as big of a deal as some are making it out to be. How many people are really buying PS5 to play at 1440p?
it would pretty much be anyone that prefers framerate over IQ
Majority of shooters will benefit from this as they cant hit anything higher than 30fps at 4k

it is actually a pretty big deal for consoles that are trying to market their games with high refresh rates....the Series X and S will be much easier to hit the 120FPS on many games performance modes as they can dial down the visuals to 1440p
its disappointing sony once again not supporting it

Wait, so if you have a 1440p monitor the PS5 is essentially a Series S with multiplatform games? Sony needs to fix this or that's pretty funny for all the fanboys dissing on the S.

Wait...so Games can't be 1440p?

They can be rendered at 1440p internally but if this report is true then the ps5 can only output 4k (upscaled) or 1080p (downscaled) with no option for a native 1440p output. So if you have a 1440p monitor, it won't output a 1440p image to that monitor and you'll end up with 1440p game resolution -> downscaled by ps5 to a 1080p output -> upscaled back to 1440p by your 1440p monitor. Each step may involve some loss of quality, especially the monitor upscaling which is typically hideous.

edit: Apparently on some monitors it's possible to output 4k then downscale from there, which is good (according to the comment by HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 above)

Struck a nerve, huh? Just respond with memes when you can't explain the difference, both will output at 1080p on a 1440p monitor according to many unless you have a special monitor that can scale so how am I wrong? Anyway, I bet this is wrong or will hopefully be fixed.

Any criticism about PS5 and these kids start calling names, making threats, or accusing you of being a fanboy. Sad.

And 1k is what, 720p?

He's right you know, the surprisingly very popular misconception comes from the difference in cinematic formats vs consumer formats - in cinematography it's 4096x2160, hence 4K naming, but in consumer market it's dropped down to 3840x2160 in order to support 16:9 aspect ratio, and in the same way 2K origins is 2048x1080, which is then translated on the consumer market as 1920x1080.

Technically it means 1024

1K= 1024 horizontal pixels
2K= 2048 horizontal pixels
4K = 4096 horizontal pixels
8K = 8192 horizontal pixels

In "TV" space it actually means 960

960 horizontal pixels
1920 horizontal pixels
3840 horizontal pixels
7680 horizontal pixels

its the easiest quick win sony could have in showing off fast framerates.......i used to be in the IQ camp but from playing game on PC on a 244hz samsung 1440p monitor its jarring going back to 60fps let alone 30fps
i hope its just a simple system update

Are you sure? I thought 100% of PS5 gamers have a beefy PC with a monitor too.
Because they will play all Xbox exclusive games on PC.

I'm sure those with a beefy PC and a Playstation, play their beefy PC on their monitor and their console on their TV. You know, like people have been doing forever unless their 14 year olds with no license from their parents to have a TV in their room.

Also, those with beefy PC's usually spend a lot of money on these things and their monitor might very well support a 4K signal.

But hey....

Which monitor do you have?

your 1440p monitor will probably work fine downscalling the 4k image, I use cheap 1024x600 panels for some electronic projects using raspberry pi that take 1080p signals and scale them to the panel without problem I even tested my PS4 with it in fact they mention the image is 1080p
Yup just like the PS4 Pro does now

Problem is the PS4 Pro doesn't output 4K on a 1440p monitor, it's 1080p. So the IQ is very degraded and blurry. Only game I know who does 1440p is Uncharted 4 & Lost Legacy.
So I hope the PS5 will indeed downscale from 4k to 1440p, but I don't hold my breath anymore.

It depends on your monitor but many HDMI 2.0 monitors will in fact allow your PS4 Pro to output to 4K into a 1440p display I have it set up that way

And yet that's the very first thing you thought about.

Italy -> mafia.

(yes, it's a very good show. Read the original book).

No offense intended. I read some of the articles and I own the movie and have watched the show many times. It's the best current show besides better call Saul. Zero zero zero is excellent as well. I will check out the book.
