The level design and exploration is amazing. There was the compound of enemies that is FULL of tough enemies. It’s almost impossible to fight or stealth through. I swam around the back, noticed it was built on some ruins, and swam under a rock wall. Found a passage and ladder that led right to where I had to go.

How open are the areas and how interesting are the puzzles?

Like, do you collect an item from one end of the map and have to use it somewhere else on the map and it’s up to you to figure out how and where to use it? Or is it more straightforward than that?
There are small little 'quests' where you could pick up an object with no specific dot on the map to go to, the only way to know what to do with it is to overhear a conversation about it or happen across a prompt to deliver the object. Totally minor things though, the major "quest items" are linked to their purpose. There are lots of "within this radius is the object" map markers for quests but you have to find them in that area yourself. Or there is a small prompt to take a photo, though its usually pretty obvious there is something worth photographing.

Have to say, the menus and user interface are really well done. Feels great on a controller. Great maps that are easiy to read.

Okay hats off to Machinegames I’m just over 15 hours in and this is already my official Game Of The Year. I had high expectations from being a big Indy movie fan but outside of some exaggerated hand-holding it’s been way better than expected. Love the map layout and how vertical it is and how you slowly unlock new areas and shortcuts, even the puzzles (especially mysteries) are good and that pretty much never happens. And I really like the freedom in combat too, grabbing a fly swatter to use as a weapon in a stressful situation is so Indy! 😁

Tried it on the living room PC with a 7800x3D and 4080 Super today. Absolutely welded shut at 60fps on highest non-RT settings. But likely 15fps with max ray tracing so that’s for a future playthrough after some serious upgrades.

Managed to beat the underground ring in the vatican by parrying and then countering with a couple of hits. Walk back to get some stamina back, wait for another hit to parry and the counter again. Its easy to see with the animation when they get parried, their arms get tangled up and theyre open for a hit back. Its not that easy to see with the normal npcs but with heavyweights you have to break them down a bit.

Path Tracing is actually not bad on a 4080, but DLSS frame gen is completely and utterly broken so just keep that off for now.

It also sometimes takes existing the game and restarting after messing with the settings, or the frame rate will tank. Game still has a lot of bugs relating to the RT and DLSS stuff, you can see why they didn't have it in review/early access copies.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
oh damn Gizeh is *huge*, much much bigger in scale than Vatican.

But it looks mostly flat, Vatican had a lot of verticality. So I guess, in the end they might end up being similar in terms of exploreable area.

edit: motherfucker are they really gonna drop me in Gizeh without any disguise? Literally every Nazi soldier recognizes me immediately. Not just the officers.

Love the map - cutaways like the movie.

And I keep getting impressed by how well the game's Indy model looks.

Really like the implementation of the maps (jarring now to jump out of the game to look at the map) and the camera for the hints.
Very nicely done, much nicer than some sidekick twit off camera giving them to you. Favorite game in a while (certainly of the cinematic variety).

I don't understand why people see melee is janky. Feels like one of the better animated/feeling fps melee games.
After going through the Vatican underground fight club and having to properly learn dodge and parry I think the melee combat is phenomenal. Before that I didn’t like it, I always got stressed out and had no stamina and couldn’t time anything right, just ended up mashing and dying.

You shouldn't have a problem at all running full RT, aka path tracing.

It's super well optimized. When it performs bad it's always memory the culprit, adjust the memory allocation accordingly, like from supreme to high, should be fine. You won't even see the difference in that memory allocation choice.

For real? I haven’t tried changing any settings, just set it to max and it ran worse that Ocarina of Time. Supreme non-RT run butter smooth though.

Peoples don't understand game design

Had it been fully mo-cap'd and realistic, they would complain that it feels slugish and unresponsive. (See Red dead redemption 2)

Taking a few shortcuts in animation and cancel animations to have responsive fights, omg, janky.

Can't win with some peoples.

Yea for real. ID tech since doom has been finicky with VRAM overbloat but the memory allocation setting will make almost all problems disappear. I have 45-60 fps on a 3080 Ti and 5800x3D ultrawide 1440p, DLSS quality, at high settings and medium memory allocation. I used to have memory allocation to high and it worked for a night, then I came back the other night and performed like 11 fps, so set to medium.

The settings are finicky right now, bugs in the settings, such as defaulting to TAA rather than DLSS when opening the game, etc.

Tweaking a bit you should definitely see good performances.

The only way to share a screenshot of what path tracing actually looks like with HDR is to take a picture of your own TV screen.

This game literally is not janky at all. It's 100% responsive and the fist fighting feels fucking awesome.

Played only a few hours but the Vatican is overwhelming. I ended exploring places I feel like I should have not, like way too early. Tons of guys who just want to beat me, so I destroyed them, and ended up being able to explore some rather empty places ? Also found a way back to the previous area. Feels so weird.

Eventually found the guy that gives the camera, but I have no clue how my path to reach him made any sense. I got attacked by a ton of guys near a toll, but I wasn't even trying to trespass. And destroyed them all. And a couple minutes later, eventually climbed a window and Indy was like "Finally made it here". After getting the camera, all the guys were back to beat me but on the other side of the toll. Made no fucking sense.

Nonsensical progress so far, will try again later. Maybe the issue is that I managed to beat all the guys each time and eventually progressed behind them, I don't know.

Not a fan of the contextual actions, they are slow and take several inputs. Simpler ones, like opening doors, should have been removed are made much quicker.

Otherwise it looks like the game has some good potential.

Ugh....guess I should have spent more time at the fight club. Still don't like the combat myself. Hopefully dodge/parry are still available even if you didn't complete the fight club part.

Just turn on your map and on screen you will see a yellow circle as well guiding you to your objective so you avoid roaming around (one on screen, not on the map) You just have to be facing towards it to see it. You can even move around just holding the map in hand the whole time. However if you just do that, you will miss a lot of secrets. I spent 7 hours in the Vatican, my friends that were going for collectables are still exploring it 17 hours later. Also dont skip sidequests...they are like W3 as high quality as the main quest.

Dodge and parry are always there, the poster probably meant that the tougher one on one fights made them learn those tactics better.

And, I agree with Fess Fess , now that I'm far enough and have had enough combat, the mechanics for dodging, parrying are pretty satisfying. The nuclear punch noises after connecting go a long way to make it feel even more enjoyable.

So I switched from my laptop with a 4070 to the Series X (to avoid the near field blurry textures) and it an extremely competent version. This is a game that is made for the big screen as well.

I'm deep into the Vatican section, and I never thought a dev team could do such a good job at capturing the essence of its source material. It really does feel like an Indiana Jones movie, a good one at that. I was for sure they were going to screw this up, especially with the first person perspective, but I was wrong. I should have known better than to doubt Machine Games.

"nuclear" punch noises?

Made no fucking sense.

The disguises aren't infallible. Captains and officers can see through them if you spend too long in their field of vision, and you can attract attention from regular enemies by doing anything suspicious like jumping around or holding firearms when you're not supposed to. Also alert phases extend significantly if you initiate combat.

I feel like I was never introduced to stealth and its rules though.

I don't recall anything in the game making a point about who could see through disguises either. Had to read it here.
Indy makes a few comments about it. Quite a bit of stuff is just through dialogue. I recommend turning on subtitles if you are not using headphones.

I remember Indy saying to stay away from "that guy" from time to time but it felt entirely random that this specific guy was suspicious of me.

I'm pretty sure there's a pop up telling you about it the first time it happens, or when you first put on a disguise.

I probably just missed it then.

I'm too far along but I'm pretty sure there was a tutorial prompt that officers can see through your disguise shortly after you exit Antonio's office at the start of the Vatican chapter.

Skill Up put out an incredibly glowing video for the game. He is a huge fan, it seems.

Some setting fiddling, updates, and reboots later and p is now running at a locked 60 fps, so that is nice. Frame gen is still completely busted, but since it runs at 60 (and since I am mostly playing on my TV with no VRR), it's fine.

Really a stunning game. I don't think it's path traced in the same pay that Cyberpunk is, and there's a curious lack of noise, but the natural lighting is still a huge boon in a game like this that involves crawling around in so many indirectly lit areas.

I'm super happy that this game gets praised and am excited to play it at some point when I have more time. It also make me tingly thinking this is a legit praiseworthy entry in the Indiana Jones IP even though it's not a movie.
