Indie Games 2016 [January] New Year, New Games, New Discussions

Any recommendations on party-based tactical RPGs in the vein of Banner Saga or the Spiderweb Software games? Hoping I've just missed a couple great games over the years. It's been hard to find similar games recently outside of just replaying D:OS again or something.

Games that I can vouch are good
Pillars of Eternity
Shadowrun Dragonfall (and then Hong Kong and Returns if you like that)

Games that might be good, but I dunno
Telepath Tactics
Rime Berta
Chroma Squad
Blackguards (1+2)

Oh yeah I forgot about Hong Kong. Cool, I'll go with that. That'll probably last me until WM part 2 is out and I'll start PoE through again. Thanks.

We made it! Now for the games.

Also... Toma... FIFTY HOURS OF GRIM DAWN?!

Did I mention that I like it? >_>

Also its only 49! ...at the time of writing this and likely not 49 anymore when you check again

What is your character of choice when you go into games like that? I used to go melee tank in hack-n-slash games but lately I just go full on magic and potential pet summoning if that is an option.

But of all the things that I can play on a laptop that is definitely not one of them!

I was always more of a ranger guy (bows, guns), but I went with the poison mage thing and pets.. yeah.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it as well. Probably didnt have enough listeners to make it viable though.
...
Anyway, I wanted to write "NOW its 50!", but I kinda missed that point already.
You should add The Short Game as a replacement recommended podcast. It's the only podcast that I've found that almost exclusively cover indie games. The last few games they discussed were Mushroom 11, Ori, Dr. Langeskov, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, and Undertale

Looks cute, might check it out down the line. (Probably not for 15$ though, considering the amount of games we try each month in these threads, no offense ;))

None taken! :)
The game is currently 10% off through noon tomorrow (1/6) and I imagine we'll do periodic sales again in the future so definitely no rush if you already have a lot on your plate (or spent too much in the Steam Sale, haha!).
We're just trying to spread the word at this point so I'd appreciate it if you could please add Anomaly 1729 to your 'Recent Releases' post! :D

I really need to try Underrail again. Been hooked on Helldivers and Talos Principle

The recent Talos thread got me to reinstall the game and get the Road To Gehenna DLC before the winter sale ended. I forgot how good the puzzles were. Simple puzzle elements - lasers, boxes, jammer, etc. - but the game masterfully combines them in such ways to make really challenging conundrums

Talos is truly an amazing game. It feels so rewarding when you finally realise what you need to for a red block. I loved the interactions with the computer(which are even better in Road to Gehnna from what I've heard) I loved the time capsules. There's also a bunch of really nice easter eggs, something that's been missing from many games recently.

I think this is one of the most impressive looking freeware games I've seen in a while

Broken Puppet - Free (PC)

It's on a custom engine too, remarkable.

Pony Island thread reached page 2. Any time an indie game OT reaches more than a page, you know it's something interesting, enough to capture GAF's attention at least :p

Pony Island - $4.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)

Pony Island is a suspense puzzle game in disguise. You are in limbo, trapped in a malevolent and malfunctioning arcade machine devised by the devil himself. It is not a game about ponies.

Guys, if you like roguelikes - like real old-school turn-based roguelikes - and sci-fi, you should check out Cogmind. It's currently in alpha. but it's great and it has the only ASCII art style that I really like

Hopefully this will hit steam or gog sooner rather than later as it looks really good.

I would like to see it on a download service so i know its likely to be accessible for a good while. I just can't be arsed spending money with other services that either offer drm free or a single site download.

It IS good, but tough as nails. I can vouch for that as well.

107.000 people who bought Factorio. So going to start replaying that game and preparing a thread for the Steam release (unless Baddy already started preparing one?)

I liked Baddies: "The best game you havent played" tag line, maybe with "now with even more STEAM" added or something.

I will support you in your thread endeavors. Even if I never play it.

We need to find a pic of the most sprawling, impressive factory
There was an insane one in the main Factorio thread, but that link is broken now
I found this one

I was thinking of creating a zooming out gif after I build a somewhat decently sized factorio, or maybe I can grab a savegame somewhere. (or maybe my old ones still work)

A really slow zoom from something basic to something insane and sprawling. It just keeps going.

Wow, props to the guy who made it. When I played the first stages of campaign I always ended up with a giant dysfunctional mess.

Also, 2016 started really well, with so many great games released and coming up. Thanks for the threads, by far my favorite on GAF.

The Short Game is great. If you're into podcasts about indie stuff, Check It Out, Comrade is totally indie focused and has two really great hosts.

I bought it and played for an hour. Seems like a good time but I keep getting distracted by Nuclear Throne because it's a goddamned masterpiece.

The 20 game minimum is intimidating! I've played enough over the year but I don't really think about ranking games with that kind of detail.

I'll probably put something together before the 18th.

ANYWAY. Nuclear Throne is brilliant. I've been a fan of Vlambeer's style for ages but I always lose interest in their earlier games after a few hours. Nuclear Throne just gets everything right*. Perfect design, pacing, sound, music and oh god the guns are great. I keep going back.

*..everything but the 30 FPS limit. I don't like the 30 FPS limit.

So am I the only here that picked up Pony Island?

I have it too. Currently playing through it. It's definitely a really great and interesting game. Enjoying my time with it where everything you do feels like it's breaking the game in some way. I really like that level of exploration where it's a constant sense of discovery. Looking forward to playing the final parts of it but so far so good and the puzzles themselves seem to be varying as I progress.
