For me it's more that he's clearly not angry anymore and doesn't really have much to say. He still creates incredible sounds but there's no solid basis to build these songs around - the lyrics are just vague paranoia/fading away/closing in/disappearing stuff and it doesn't sound like he means any of it, that they're more just a frame work for an idea. Some really cool soundscape stuff on her that I'm enjoying, but the lyrics may as well not be there.

Some interesting Thom Yorke-ish moments on here.

I've yet to find my way home from work to hear this, but GAF sounds disappointed. I guess even through Trent came back haunted, everything is either a copy of a, or even in some cases, an all time low.

I like most of what I've heard so far but I'm only up to track 9. I've listened to Satellites a few times. Really love that song.

all time low fucking owns. it's so dancey and funky. Seriously can't wait to hear it live.
I'm sure my opinions will be all over the place for the first few listens :p And yes, the outro of that song is amazing. I just can't get past those lyrics :p

I'm really loving some of it - I Would For You, In Two, Copy of A.

That's what I'll be doing if he releases the multitracks for Satellite.

I'm gonna be the next fucking Skrillex with my Satellite Farts remix.

All Time Low, Satelitte and Copy of A are great.
I also really like the end of While I'm Still Here, especially when the weird horns come in and then seamlessly leads into Black Noise.

Some of the hate for this album here is just lol. What do you all expect from a NIN album with the crew on hand to record and the sonic journey Trent has been on? He's not going to retread old ground and go Pretty Hate Machine. This is more like The Fragile mixed with parts of HTDA more or less. Come on Gaf, learn to like new things. Artists evolve, if they didn't they wouldn't be artists.

Without reading too many reactions, I'll say I really enjoyed this a lot. I think a couple songs are up there with NIN's best, namely: Copy of A, Satellite, and I Would For You. A couple I didn't like, but overall I'd say it's up to snuff.

Damn dude, I never looked at it as a "sonic journey." Please, tell us more about how art works.

Indeed.

Enjoying it myself.

'In Two' is insane. I love that robotic voice effect near the start, and that erratic 'Violet Fluid' sound of the track. Pissed I left my good headphones back home and won't be there for another week.

Anyone really expecting Fragile or prior NIN sound is always bound to be disappointed. I just hunker down and enjoy the ride. The guy was in an alcohol and depression fueled downward spiral. It's like asking a five year old to write the definitive blues track. Not attempting to diminish his recent efforts because I enjoy all of them. His brain is in a different place now. The music is no less NIN, the writer has just changed based on his outlook. So the guy wants to release a few more upbeat tracks, he's fuckin' earned it. The CD has a few tracks that will find their way into my go to NIN fix tracks.

Of all his work it does (overall) sound most like the Downward Spiral to me - the drum machines, pristine synths and cold digital feel to it all. Such a weird mix of styles in places - the strings, then trumpets later on, a little bit of HTDA and some of his soundtrack stuff.

Ah, I meant sax :p Not trumpet. haha.

man I can't stop laughing at the goofy ass sax in While I'm Still Here's last 20 seconds
Kinda reminds me of Radiohead's National Anthem - there are a few Radiohead/Thom Yorke -esque elements on this, imo. In both vocal delivery and production. The ending of Running in particular.

Well if it's reminiscent of Radiohead, that could explain why the album's so awful.

After hearing this 5 times, my opinion on this record is kind of mixed. There is some really good stuff here. But on the whole, it's kind of a boring record for me. A lot of it feels like Trent is just uninspired.

The mellow/stripped down sound doesn't really do it for me.

I'm not surprised by the hate or disappointment here, but the general buzz has been mostly positive. Doesn't surprise me, the album is great.

Yeah it reminded me of the Muppet Show intro for a bit when I first heard it.

Kinda a bizarre choice.

Not really that bizarre. The song Purest Feeling used a sax and it's the first thing I thought of when listening to While I'm Still Here. A lot of the early demos had this vibe and it's a total throwback. I don't think it's goofy or out of place, it works within the context of the album, which has a vintage vibe to it anyway. The latter half of the album reminds me of old 90s tribal drum and bass at times.

I found the album to be pretty boring overall. Some good production here and there on a handful of tracks but most are fairly weak. A lot of the vocals and lyrics felt pretty bland and even cringe worthy at times. Damn shame. And I don't want a retread of previous albums, like some here seem to think of those who don't like it. Practically every NIN fan knows that Trent always explores a new direction with each album. He just seems to be focused on a direction I find boring.

If I love The Slip and With Teeth, will I enjoy the new album? I haven't been hot on the singles.
The singles are probably the most 'straightforward' of the tracks - Came Back Haunted and Everything being the most poppy/structured of the album. Copy of A, perhaps, but they're not really representative of the sound at all.

On further listens I'm liking the album more and more, some sublime moments (the outro of All Time Low is incredible, all of In Two) with much of the album having a really electronic, claustrophobic and haunting feel. Shades of Spiral with the robot synthy production. There's some crazy intensity here without the need for screaming or aggro, which is kinda refreshing. Maybe it's my current frame of mind but I'm finding much of the album has a slight undercurrent of sadness or melancholy. Some of the lyrics are evocative. Many are also kinda cringey but I thought that about nearly all of the Fragile, too. Rhyming for the sake of it, just structure for some awesome sounds.

I think you'll either love the direction he's gone with the sound or will find it boring. I love that wall of sound, textural guitar he's used on HTDA and his soundtrack work so in that regard, I'm loving it ;)

I like Disappointed a LOT. Copy of A is cool. And I like the beginning of I Would for You before the lyrics start to be sung.

iTunes album streams are the WORST. WORST. It's like it's 2002 over there and you can't skip a song and it comes through as crappy radio quality.

Just gave it my first listen. It's pretty good. Not amazing, but I'll be listening to it more. There's probably a handful of really good songs, and most of the rest are pretty decent. My biggest complaint is that as a whole, its a little flat with quite a few mellow songs. Not much of a rock element to be found anywhere. But like I said, I'll definitely be listening more.

you haven't lived until a random little kid ask you "how do you make love".
It's o.k. Better than I expected even. There is nothing revolutionary about HM but it gives us more nin, which in this case is a good thing. Only time will tell if it has any longevity but for now it's satisfying.

I give it 3.75 hands and knees out of 5

I'm really liking it, probably my favorite since With Teeth. I didn't dislike any of the tracks, but I do wish they flowed into the next a little smoother. That's kind of been a staple for NIN, where these just all sound like a bunch of singles. Really good singles mind you, but I miss the cohesiveness most of the previous albums had.

It's at the beginning too. I was wondering if anyone else heard that.

Mhmm, I knew what it was right away. Shared the song with some of the TinyGAF group and pointed out the sample. It was a cool gaming nerd moment, which doesn't surprise me. Not sure if he still is, but Trent used to be a pretty big gamer.

I love that sound in All Time Low. No idea what the instrument is but it sounds so cool.

I'm making my way through the album now. I've only really listened to the first half. It does feel like there are some elements of his earlier stuff in there. All Time Low is my favorite in the first stretch.
