Each month, the iOS GAF community hosts a thread for new game releases, rumors and discussion that define the fast-moving world of iOS gaming.

The OP will contain games that released both towards the end of the previous month and games that have released during the current month -- all games which have been highlighted by the GAF community in one way or another. This way you can keep tabs on the best games and at the same time curate an excellent resource to look back on to find games you may have missed.

Also keep an eye out for the ‘GAF iOS Challenges’; events where GAF battle it out on the Game Center leaderboards of a chosen game for both fame and fortune (prizes donated by members of our community).

[GAF DEV QUOTE]We just released SKULLS OF THE SHOGUN for iOS today. It's $5 and a universal app with zero IAP, and it's got the new singleplayer episode, progression system, and new multiplayer maps from the Steam version (the Bone-A-Fide Edition) rolled into it, making it the sickest Skulls game you could ever hope to play on a tablet.

We authored all our content at super high res, so the first time we saw it up and running on a Retina iPad our eyes exploded. It's got like 3x the pixels of the Xbox 360 version. I guess we're living in the future and I'm totally okay with that.
Skulls on the go? Couldn't say no.
On this. Never got a chance to play it on other systems, but saw it on Giant Bomb back in the day and love me some advance wars-esque strategy [Read: fun and charming turn based strategy game!].

I'm really enjoying Lords of Waterdeep at the moment. Never played the original board game so I can't say how faithful a reproduction it is but it's fun and seems to have a good level of strategy involved. Online works the same way as Ascension so there's a fair bit of waiting for others to take your turn which can sometimes to cause you to forget what quests you're trying for but at the worst that's only annoying. The UI is crisp and clean and the art pretty nice, the tutorial also does a great job of explaining the board and mechanics.

I've tried other playdek games before such as Agricola andy ever been able to get in to them despite really wanting to, they've either been too difficult (either due to a poor tutorial or me being thick, not sure which) or they've just not managed to hod my attention. Ascension is my most played ios game without a doubt and at the moment I reckon Waterdeep could end up not being far behind.

I'm happy to report it is UTTERLY fantastic.

Different enough from Bulge to keep me playing in the Ardenness nonetheless, but absolutely fantastic.
Scenarios are fast and furious, different between each other enough to be fresh.
I love that, no matter what, you always seems to breakthrough Moscow and then you are drove back a bit next impulse.
The scattered and diverse VP spots are a fantastic addition...give you so many different paths to victory (both defending and attacking) and the vastness of the frozen plains gives you plenty of movements to try to plan a strategy and have it completed somewhat in a relative short timespan (something that was a bit more limited in Bulge, which poses other fantastic as well challenges).

I confess I really got lost in the frozen plains near Moscow last night...all those sounds, the blowing wind, the firearms, the cavalry...and then....the grand final music...4 hours passed by without noticing.

Cant wait to start the full blown campaign.

Another fantastic release, congrats to the devs.

Downloaded Stealth Bastard/Stealth Inc. and played through the first set of levels.

I was always a big fan of the Desktop version (I played some of it on my Mac), and wanted a portable version. Good news is it's a pretty faithful port. If you want to know about the base game, just look up reviews for that version and that should suffice,

One thing that I'm not a great fan of in the iOS version is the "floating" movement controls. The movement is controlled by basing wherever you put your left finger down as the center point if a virtual analog stick. For most analog games, I can see the reasoning behind this, but playing this previously on my Mac with a keyboard, I'd actually prefer a more digital d-pad or at least the option for one.

My issue with the floating analog pad is that, with my ipad, to go left you have to drag left, which means that many times, I find my thumb running off into the black bezel and bringing me to a grinding halt.

Otherwise, still love the base game. Great music and graphics, fun mechanics, but some odd control decisions.

So, Oceanhorn. Almost 2 hours in... I like it. It's pretty much a Zelda clone (it's indeed pretty shameless sometimes) but it's decent, I'm having fun with it. Probably more than I did with PH and ST. Navigation is more Phantom Hourglass than Wind Waker.

Tip: block just before an enemy attack and it will bounce, giving you an opening. The visual cue is very subtle (animation is not hot in this game) so I discovered this by accident. Some enemies like ogres will block you, so it's useful to know,

I say give it a try if you don't have a 3DS to play the new Zelda.
Well, I just turned it on and played around on the first island for 15 minutes:

-Music is wonderful
-Graphics seem really great so far. My friends at work who don't play phone games were jaw-dropped when I showed them
-Controls seem to be pretty good so far. Just touch anywhere and push to start moving. a big action button in the bottom right corner for interacting/picking things up etc

I've barely scratched the surface of the game but so far, I'm lovin' it (tm)

Oceanhorn is....surprisingly good? I've only put 40 minutes into it so far, but it seems like a competent little adventure game. The controls are actually quite well done. Nothing too complicated has been asked yet control wise, but just moving around has the kind of tightness you expect more from an analog stick. The graphics look really nice on the iPad Air, super clean and colorful and runs at 60fps. The world and characters could use a bit more personality, but it doesn't feel as cheap and generic as I was expecting. The music is really good so far, which helps in injecting more life into the world.

Thanks!

As for Football Heroes not being a universal app, we wanted to be under the 100MB cellular limit for iPhone. Our iPad assets are much higher in resolution (and have more frames for animation) and we wanted the flexibility to make the iPad version more tablet-friendly in the future, after initial launch.

The good news is that if you use GameCenter, you can play on your iPhone and iPad no problem. Achievements are shared, as is account and team data. For example, at work, I level up my team on my phone and then go home and play the game on my iPad.

Football Heroes is like Mutant League Football mashed up with the awesome card system from the old Madden games on PS2. The controls are fluid and make punching through the defence (literally punching) very satisfying. The RPG mechanics aren't overbearing (your team's players are represented as cards and earn XP which ranks them up), the IAP isn't offensive (you can basically buy cash or boosters but don't have to as you can buy boosters with in game money just fine), and the multiplayer is awesome - especially locally. If they do a hockey one, it's day one for me.

holy shit is football heroes kinda fun.

punching could be a bit op though. does the spin move have a cooldown? Wonder if a runner can just spam that.

made a quick OT thread [linked above] if people wanna discuss stuff or do mp or something.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quizup/id718421443?ls=1&mt=8

This needs to go to the Featured section IMO. Finally, I've been waiting for a decent trivia game for a loooong time and this is quite fun and fast-paced and overall addictive. The whole game feels really well designed and here connecting to Facebook is worth your while.

I know it's a completely corporate endeavour made to make millions but it feels so decent. IAP are for buying XP boost that in result gives you a boost on leaderboards but at the moment I had no problem becoming top player in my country (which feels great BTW).
I'm loving this app, like you I've wanted a decent trivia game. It's super sleek and the rounds only take a minute or two making them perfect for wasting time. Plenty of topics too.
Yeah, Quiz Up is SUPER. Love it.

Meltdown is the best third-person cover shooter on the platform. Amazing controls, great weapons and light RPG mechanics, randomly generated levels, and four-player co-op.

The style is also worth lauding; it has cool cell shaded character art akin to Borderlands and some fun animations that remind me of Warhammer: Space Marine. The level design and art is less inspired, and environment reuse is a bit disappointing with this initial version, but the devs are openly teasing more content.

Admittedly, the levels are a bit bland but variety does come in the later missions with bosses and differing layouts. The devs are already teasing more content in game, mind.

In spite of its shortcomings, next to Trigger Fist, it's one of the best shooters on iOS bar none.
I was impressed at first. Nice visuals, solid gameplay... but the game is just another kill kill rinse and repeat grind feat. All the levels looks samey. It's randomly generated but I can swear it always looks and feels almost exactly the same. Always same assets too.

Game is fun, but not that great IMO.
i agree with meltdown. been having more fun than i'd thought. definitely reminds me a bit of gears of war, but top down and faster. It does get quite tough too.Shame online is a bit ghetto atm.

It's a pixel-based Death Star tamagotchi on your iOS device basically, like Tiny Tower before it, you'll spend more time tending to your construction than actively 'playing' this game and that's perfectly fine. It's riddled with Star Wars-infused humour and tidbits that both Tiny Tower and Star Wars fans alike will love. Nimblebit strikes a really nice balance, you'll play it for weeks a few minutes a day. It's free to play, but the IAPs are never forced and you'll be able to 'complete' it in a few weeks without spending a dime.

Rayman Jungle Run was the best 'runner' game on iOS... Rayman Fiesta Run is now the best 'runner' game on iOS. Also, calling it a runner game is a great disservice as it's so so much more than that, it's platforming/racing bliss on iOS. This is what Sonic dreams of. GET THIS!

Sorcery! is a four-part epic adventure, I haven't played part 2 yet but part 1 was some of the finest make-your-own-adventure fused with table-top roleplay gaming I've ever had and I expect nothing less from this one. A masterful adaptation of the Sorcery! gamebook series from the 1980's.

Mash up a SNES-era Zelda adventure with a Wind Waker-esque artstyle and lots and lots of dungeon puzzles, items and humour and you got Ittle Dew in a nutshell. The puzzles start out small but get increasingly more elaborate as you traverse a quite large world very 'inspired' from something like Zelda: A Link to the Past and the story is quite amusing. Basically it's an unabashed Zelda clone and it knows it wholeheartedly, completely infused with a bunch of self-aware humor (incl. the name of the actual game). The controls are done well with a virtual d-pad and buttons.

Q - Should I buy this new high-priced game or wait for a sale?
A - Maybe! Just be aware that iOS games have a tendency to go on sale frequently and unpredictably, even recent games can be a dollar rather than premium $4-5. Spend your pack of gum money wisely.
As a recommendation, set up a RSS feed for the price changes on http://appshopper.com/ which will then notify you of any price fluctuations for old and new games alike.

Q - I just got an iPhone/iPad. What are the best games?
A - Best iOS Games Ever v1 / Best iOS Games Ever v2 / iOS Hidden Gems. You're welcome.

Q- For gaming, should I get the iPad Mini, or iPad 4?
A- Both have their pro's and con's. Mini is cheaper, and arguably a better grip for gaming, but the screen isn't as great and the device is less powerful than the 4. Most games these days all run fine on it, but I'm not sure about in a year.

Q- I'm a new iOS user, what non-gaming apps should I get ASAP?
A - This thread would be a great place to start. Asking here wouldn't hurt either!

Q - How do I back up my game saves for games that do not support iCloud save games?
A - Use a file manager program such as i-FunBox (PC/Mac) - It's free and requires no jailbreak.
i-FunBox has many different features, but to back up save games you would just want to do the following:

  • Click the iFunBox Classic tab
  • Connect your iOS device, via WiFi or USB, it should then appear in the Connected Devices list on the left side of the UI.
  • Under User Applications, navigate to the game you want to back up save games for.
  • Select the Documents and Library folders and copy them one at a time to your PC/Mac - this will copy the folders and all their contents. They contains your save files and settings for the game. Some games only use Documents, some use both.
To restore a backed up save game do the reverse.
  • Under User Applications, navigate to the game you want to restore save games for.
  • Select the Documents and/or Library folders and choose to copy from PC/Mac.
  • Navigate to where you saved the backed up Documents and/or Library folders on your PC/Mac, open them and select all the files within it and open them. This will copy the folder contents back onto your iOS device.
  • Restart/fully close the game itself and your saves should be back!
Check that the file structure of the game is retained, e.g. GameName > Documents > files after you're done (no Documents folder within the Documents folder!), otherwise the game will not recognize your restored saves!

Q - How do I hide my Real Name on Game Center?
A - Your real first and last name (taken from your Apple ID) will be shown to your GC friends. If you value that information and want GAF's leaderboards to show your GAF nickname instead, here's how you do it:
  • Go to http://appleid.apple.com and log in with your Apple ID details via "Manage your Apple ID".
  • In the "Name, ID and Email Addresses" section, click Edit on the Your Name field at the top.
  • Change you First and Last name (you must enter both) to whatever you like (e.g. First Name: Tunesmith, Last Name: GAF)
Done, now that's who you're going to be listed as on your friend's Game Center leaderboards. This will affect Game Center *and* your Apple ID. If it's the same account you use for App Store/iTunes, you will still be able to use it for iTunes/App Store's purchases (you can still buy whatever you want like you could before) *BUT* in the receipt it'll show your nickname or whatever you chose as First Name and Last Name when you changed those fields. The first time you will use the modified account on App Store/iTunes, you will be asked to verify the account by re-entering the 3 digits code of the credit card's CCV security code (if you make your purchases using a credit card).

Man, I was hoping Tiny Death Star would be out by now. It's been two weeks since the soft launch. I could have burned myself out on it by now!

Thought I'd pop in an plug my friend's first iOS game, which just launched recently, RGB Warped. We used to work together on Realm of the Mad God, before he left to go do his own thing.

I believe the game is free to download for the time being, so check it out if you're so inclined. Very old school arcade-style action with some psychedelic overtones.

Also, make sure you take your seizure meds beforehand if you have history of them like me...

I knew XCOM: Enemy Unknown would be unstable, but I didn't expect it to crash after every mission on my iPad 2. Sometimes, it would crash multiple times at the same spot until I change one little thing, which would let it progress.

Bit.Trip Run's performance on the iPad 4th gen is laughable. Very disappointed.

edit: it looks like a memory leak: smooth during the first minutes, stuttery right after. Fix that, gaijin! Also, the timing feels weird: I feel I have to tap way too early to do the jumps.

edit 2: holy shit, just leaving the game open in the background makes your iPad stutter. Definitely a memory leak!

Hey, I got quoted!

You could probably remove all of it save for the last paragraph. That's where the review is, the rest is just strategy talk.

Felt it gave a nice sense of what one could expect from the gameplay side of things outside of "it's match-3, with Iron Man", plus if it's helpful strategy to get more enjoyment out of things then I don't mind. :)

Some Bit.Trip Run! impressions; first off, it runs wonderfully as one might expect on a 5S and a 5, stutters here and there on my iPad 3, a bit of a shame since timing is everything with this one. It's a really colorful title with a great artstyle, the production values overall are top notch. It's a level-based rythm 'endless-runner' in a way where you jump/slide/kick and dance around obstacles of various kinds while collecting gold pieces used to unlock further levels and costumes -- all to the beat of the really amazing soundtrack. It ramps up in difficulty as you go and can feel unforgiving quite quickly, there are usually mid-level checkpoints but that's it, if you get hit you're back to either there or to the very start.
The controls are really well done as well, it's simple tap/hold anywhere to jump/glide and then 3-way direction swipes for sliding, dancing and kicking. Works for both lefties and righties. :)
I personally love this sort of game, I was a big fan of the original Runner game and this one comes highly recommended from me.

Anomaly 2: It's Tower-offense, the opposite of Tower defense if you will, where you control a group of units trying to survive through gauntlets of enemy "towers". I don't generally play tower defense games like Kingdom Rush etc. but I love the Anomaly series. The sequel now also adds some really cool online multiplayer and looks gorgeous to boot! Recommended for fans of the genre. :)

You already owned the Jetpacks / costumes from weeks prior so they didn't turn up in the rotating inventory. All older ones became a part of it, so you occasionally miss out. There's only so much we can make in time :P

We've got some really rad stuff coming out soon though, stay tuned!

Nice thread. Just got and ipad air. I've never had any ios games before. Got bit trip and device 6. Looking for more.

Edit: I've seen the best of threads in the FAQ. Just sorting through which games interest me.

Double edit: Grabbed Simpson's Tapped Out. Anomaly 2 (probably should have gotten Anomaly 1). Marvel Puzzle Quest.

I maxed out the graphics in Iesabel and turned on post processing (which ran like a slideshow on iPad 4), and the frame rate was very smooth on the Air :)

Thanks to GTA eating up all my gaming time I've been out of the iOS loop for a while. Was the Shadowrun port any good? I love me an RPG.

Wait, do you mean there's compression artifacts? The HDMI standard isn't supposed to use lossy compression...

30 pin HDMI out is an exact mirror image with no compression or anything, however over a more modern lightning port you get what is essentially AirPlay footage, compressed video with a maximum resolution of 1600x900, you also get longer latency between iOS device and the output image, AND it's limited to 30FPS where as 30 pin could hit 60FPS.

"The reason why this adapter exists is because Lightning is simply not capable of streaming a 'raw' HDMI signal across the cable," said the supposed Apple employee. "Lightning is a serial bus. There is no clever wire multiplexing involved."

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/03/apples-lightning-to-hdmi-cant-actually-output-at-1080p/

So in short, lightning is shit and apple will use it for a long time.

This also means that a 3rd gen iPad is the most powerful 30 pin device out there, what a crook of shit.

I knew I shouldn't go in a Apple Store this morning to 'check' the new iPad Air....had no intentions of buying.

Restoring backup right now.

This thing is really light!!!
Seems almost a mini.

I just want to say that I bought a 5th gen touch the other day to do game testing on and as an iPhone 5 user I was also curious on what sort of performance the 4S and 5g Touch chipset gives.

It's not too bad but it's really suffering with top quality 3D titles, Asphalt 8 plays but it has some nasty textures and filtering in places and the frame rate is all over the place, Sonic 4 ep 2 looked the same as on my 5 just with a much more choppy frame rate (but I blame the game for that as the frames would drop on my 5 also) However it's still an amazing piece of kit for a lot of other games, a lot of 2D titles I tried work well, PvZ2 runs, Megatroid runs and so forth, my game runs great too as long as I keep some of the details down.

I also love how thin and light the 5th gen touch is, i'm used to my iPhone 5 which felt slightly lighter then my old Galaxy Ace but this touch is great, thinner then my 4g touch, much lighter, battery life is worse then my iPhone but that is kind of given at the thinness.

The screen seems just as high quality as my iPhone 5 also, the colours are clear and you can see the screen at extreme angles with most of the brightness being kept.

Just a shame it's £179 for the non camera model, seems expensive for an old chip set but then the next phone model up in terms of power is still £500, so.

I should also say that AirPlay mirroring games is not good, games will really suffer if they are 3D or using a lot of cpu, HDMI out also the same due to the lightning port = AirPlay, just a direct connection instead of wifi.

I just got my iPhone 2 weeks ago so I haven't really gamed too much on it yet. This thing can put of some pretty graphics though. I tried out Dead Trigger 2 and Real racing since they are both free.

IHowever it's still an amazing piece of kit for a lot of other games, a lot of 2D titles I tried work well, PvZ2 runs, Megatroid runs and so forth, my game runs great too as long as I keep some of the details down.
