Is 60 FPS killing overall graphical fidelity?

Recently we saw GT7 and let's be real it looks worse than Driveclub. Guess which one is 30 (Driveclub) and which is 60 (GT7). Halo Infinite recieved huge backlash for it's graphics and again it was 60 FPS. Jusy look at RDR2 graphics how jaw dropping the lighting is and compare it to a next gen 60 FPS like Far Cry 6. I mean clearly there is a pattern.

But in all honesty it depends on what the devs are aiming for. Gaming doesn't have to be all about the pinnacle of pixel perfection.

Nope. We get both fidelity and performance modes where the only sacrifice is the resolution, but everything looks exactly the same. It all depends on the devs, how much effort they're willing to put in utilizing new consoles.

I don't know if it looks worse than dirveclub, (The stream I saw was VHS quality) but yes 60 fps &4k is killing the graphical jump this gen.

yes, it is. a naughty dog employee himself even said that they can't push certain things like physics and visuals so hard if the game was designed around 60fps. digital foundry with the resolution counting and frame rate obsession ultimately has stifled game innovation in the industry.

2013 hardware is holding back graphical fidelity.

Lets just make 60 fps the standard and we will all suck it up for a bit and then the graphical improvements will come. Im not trying to go back to 30fps.

Before it was teh same with HD and 4K etc etc. Framerates suffering due to resolution. now maybe a bit it swung the other way but thats fine by me.

I dont think it is at all. Was just playing Hitman 3 on X, super sharp, super smooth, I mean at this point I don't see how we could expect much more than that really.

Yes, if console games are primarily designed around 60fps then the rate of graphical progress will be slowed. But for many games this is the right choice. Gran Turismo 7 has to be at 60fps. No one wants to play a driving sim at 30fps. Halo has to be 60fps as well because multiplayer shooters need this as a bare minimum these days. I recognise that Halo Infinite is running at 30fps on the Xbox One consoles but that's not a very good way to play the game. I think you're at a significant disadvantage when playing against Xbox Series players and PC players if you're playing at 30fps. I'm sure there'll be slower paced action adventure games and RPGs etc. which will be made over the coming years that will return to 30fps and we'll see console graphics move forward to a greater degree in those genres.

But was that interview about PS5 or old, Jaguar-based consoles?

60 FPS needs to be the standard like it used to be. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a beautiful game that controlled and felt like dogshit not a good comparison to be made in favour of using 30fps in any world.

It saddens me that most people don't know the difference between 30 and 60. For me it's glaring. It's one of the reasons I fell out of gaming back in the PS3/xbox360 days.
And this was before anyone was talking about frames.

30 fps looks like dogshit whenever you pan the camera, so no.
Exactly.

For slow paced games 30 might work. But it better be a slow panning and smooth 30.

What's worse for 30 fps games is the dev tries to compensate with that god awful blur effect to hide choppiness. With 60 fps games, you can turn and pan smooth with no smear effect.

Okay but what about a game that locks at the resolution that they use for the 60fps mode but with a 30fps cap, that would allow for a leap in graphical fidelity.

I am not going to go back to 30fps, it's not worth it, the slight graphical increments can come later. 60+fps is the only reason I miss gaming on PC and now consoles are moving towards that I see that as a bigger benefit than see Abby's tight forearm muscles swinging a golf club.

I will sacrifice graphical fidelity for 60fps any day of the week and twice on Saturday. I am not going back to 30fps, nothing makes a console look and feel weak like chugging along just to hit 30fps.

Uh, you realize that RDR2 could run at 60 on the new consoles no problem, right?

Hopefully 60 is here to stay, but I'd like it if Pro consoles came out with enough power to run games at 60 while being designed to run at 30 on the base consoles.

A smoother framerate is always preferred, but again folks, you can't judge the next gen systems by cross gen games (regardless of how great they look)

THIS IS WHAT NEXT GEN LOOKS LIKE THUS FAR

Flight Simulator Airplane GIF by NVIDIA GeForce

Dark Souls Ps5 GIF by PlayStation

Xboxonex GIF by Xbox

All of these look much better than most eighth generation titles due to-
Lighting
particles
Shadows
loading
far higher CPU allowing for more on screen
Far higher GPU allowing for more fur, textures, shaders higher poly models etc

and these are all early Next Gen Only titles...

Games like Forspoken, Gran Turismo 7, Project Eve, etc will all only get better looking in time.

Make everything 60fps standard.

then work on it for years to come. Its about time.
Watching GT7 and playing GT7 might be two different things no.

Imagine still wanting shitty framerate even now that 60fps or more is FINALLY becoming the standard on console, rofl. Some people are unbelievable.

Yes, I've been saying this for years. This lack of next gen looking games is the future you frame nerds want. OMG ITS 60FPS ITS SO NEXT GEN BRO WOW HAHA OMG SO SMOOTH...

Fuck outta here with that. stick to 30. blow my mind visually.

No one in real life gives a crap about frame rate.

Not once in the mediums history has "steady high frame rate! Holds at 60 fps!" been on the back of a box. Always graphics.

Youre right OP, and don't forget to mention that literally every single game ever at 60fps looks worse than its 30fps counterpart.

60 should only be in multi-player games, never in any game where actually atmosphere and Fidelity matter.

To be honest 60 fps is a true generational leap for me. Also i dont see much difference in graphics between performance and fidelity

There were lots of talk about framerates after Playstation 1, on SNES people mostly said some games felt sluggish though.

But I agree on your point here. I remember thinking my PS1 had broke down on me when swapping from Tekken to Tohshinden. Took awhile to understand it was the difference between 25fps and 50fps I was seeing (PAL).

30fps works fine for slow games but anything with fast action needs 60fps or higher, imo.

Simply yes.

I prefer 60fps but I've seen in all the games I tested in PS5 (Demons Souls, Ratchet, Spiderman, Valhalla, etc) that the cost are games looking only slightly better than PS4 Pro.

It shouldn't be if it is. Greater than 60 fps without sacrificing major graphical fidelity has been the norm for even mid-tier PC gaming for like ten years now. If consoles can't catch up by now even while more than doubling the power of their consoles the past gen and this one, then what the fuck are they doing?

I'm curious about all this hate towards 30fps. I mean, people speak as it was unplayable, but everyone here we have played The Last of us, God of War, Zelda Breath of the wild, and hundreds of 30fps games without no problem and considered them masterpieces. And now they become unplayable dogshit?

You can say 60fps are preferable, but I think is hyperbolic the reaction against 30fps when we have played and enjoyed hundreds or thousands of games at 30fps.

Hugely disagree.
Final Fantasy 7 remake moving in 60fps at a lower resolution looks better than 30fps in motion with a higher resolution.
Sure, pausing the game and noticing a lower resolution is one thing but you don't play paused games either.

I think you are severely underestimating how good GT7 still looks (RT also adds a lot and lighting is excellent) and if you get to experience it at a similar quality on PSVR2 you will change your mind ;).

Still, with the game having to run also on base PS4 and with high framerate and high resolution focus (4K@60+ which people would scream bloody murder if the game did not aim there or above) you will get necessary cutbacks.
Same resolution and framerate, but built for PS5 only from the ground up would have stood taller.

In other news, remember how you fee next time someone suggests releasing iteration of console HW and GPU's more frequently to fox this problem… it won't: the pace of silicon evolution is slowing and the increase of power needed to show a marked jump in visuals is greater and greater as time goes by which makes this issue worse.

Yo what the fuck is wrong with this forum? This last year is just unbelievable with all of these opinion and questions and analysis and whatever. Its gotten even worse in the last couple of months.

OT:

No.
