''It was the most beautiful car that we crashed'' - Ex-CONCORD Devs

cbf.png

Robert Ashley from the podcast "A Life Well Wasted" speaks with a few devs who recently worked at CONCORD.

"One of the things that a lot of people wonder in the comments section is like, 'what are they thinking!? How do these devs not know (how the game is being received)?' We know. We know full well. We know what's happening. We agree with it half the time. And more often than not, it's (changing the game) just not possible given the circumstances, given the stakes, the sunk cost into these things."

"It was the most beautiful car that we crashed."

"Any gamers and fellow devs who gave it a chance and enjoyed and appreciated it for what it was, all the love to you guys. I'm sad that it didn't find its gamer base...It was so special. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything."

"We were excited locally in the studio, but the public had no idea what it was at first. I thought people were just harsh during the reveal trailer. I was like 'You know what? There's things we need to work on but it's okay. Once people touch the game, it's going to change things.' And then the beta numbers dropped, and numbers were not what we were expecting. And I think our mindset started shifting to 'things could go really bad.'"

"It made news for how poorly it (the beta) did. Like, people would go out to news sites to, like, hear about our game and how negatively it was doing instead of like, hearing what the game was about. People heard about our game because of how poorly it did. But people didn't hear about what the game was, or even really tried. There was no shortage of news articles and YouTube videos and hate on the internet about how poor the numbers were, so it was pretty apparent."

They still have no idea why the public responded the way it did. Or they don't want to know.

Yeah.. I'd be looking into charges of fraud and dishonest expenditure if I'm honest..

It wouldn't be 'har har guffaw, slapped backs all round. Derp'

No wonder the industry is fucked.

Sounds like deflection again to me. Basically saying "oh, our game was great, it's just no one played it!"

Bitch, your game was woke version of Overwatch... Even if it was the most technically competent game ever made, it was still just a lesser copycat of something that isn't really as popular as it once was.

Marvel Rivals puts a wrench into some of my understanding...maybe it's the cuz that game is F2P, maybe it's the Marvel character, maybe it's cuz the chicks are actually hot in it, I dunno, but Concord was not appealing to look at, and it was still pay to play, but was still gonna have plenty of F2P elements.

Its like going taking a shit and saying its a beautiful crap you made.

The most beautiful car

Imagine being proud of making that failure garbage that didn't last a month.
Do people still believe these guys are ok in the head?

What I still don't understand is why not at least trying to let it become a F2P and see how it turns out. I mean they spent 200M on it...
The content runway built probably did not support a F2P model.

You have to be constantly launching characters and skin packs etc to keep people hooked, look at what Marvel Rivals is doing, that's much closer to how a F2P game should be doing.

I dont give a shit about online gaming... but I'd really like to know WHAT IF concord wasn't infectec by this libtard virus (the fact that we can see some guys that worked for Concord didnt WANT to public learn the lesson is the real desease)...

It sold 25k worldwide, bro, no1 wanted to play it, there is no "modern audience".
the numbers were desastrous, but why kill it? Just sell a few more copies, support those sells and not refund the entire thing, try your luck with f2p and hope for at least some revenue. They had some plans for content anyway. Bringing everything to a grinding halt, seemed like an overreaction.
The whole thing was embarassing, as was eg. Suicide Squad, but that is still around. By killing Concord it is cemented as their biggest flop ever and a total write off. Foamstars is still running. APB and Hellgate were both shutdown only to be still alive today. I am not much of an online gamer, so I never tested it, but most of the feedback was "i don't want to play it" and a few that actually played it said it was alright or even good. Maybe just new characters would have helped already and redoing that should not be enourmos extra work. Would just need to be done by different people, since those in charge seem to think the selection was no problem. No idea about the Overwatch-like (? or whatever is close) gameplay loop, though. OW is not hot anymore either.

Cmon that part is easier. If you remove bubbles as GAF, nobody is talking about Concord, so it's cheaper (less expensive?) for Sony to simply forget about it, assume the loss and keep going. Playstation as a brand is more healthly and profitable as ever...

Quoting myself from July 21, 2024

This will be a monumental flop for Sony and I'm glad it's happening now. They will get the message and reset their focus. It's probably too late for some other games they have in the pipeline though.

And of course I wasn't the only one that thought this. However, did they (Sony) "get the message"? I guess we'll see if Fairgame$ and Marathon come out.
I think the devs of Concord got the message alright. Just deflecting like the agenda driven pieces of shit they are.

The contrast between Concord and Marvel Rivals couldn't be anymore apparent. It's actually astounding just how vastly the two games turned out. I could see management wanting to charge for the game, but did they also say make the ugliest generic characters possible? At some point you have to stop trying to send the blame up the ladder.

Multipla is even uglier.
Multipla is the craziest one.
The guys that made it operate at a level of design i didn't even know existed, some might even say at a level of design beyond design itself.

Hey man, leave the Kangoo alone, it's from the era when Renault made funky looking cars, same with Twingo.
I spent all my youth in kangoos and twingos i can mock them, it is out of love.
