It's been exactly 2 months since Destiny launched - what are your thoughts on it?

I thought it had great potential with fantastic core gameplay, but I stopped after I completed the raid and realized just how uninteresting and bland all of the content of the game actually was.

The main campaign was copy-pasted mission design through and through to the point of painful tedium, the strikes threw mechanics out the window in favor of flavorless bullet-sponge bosses, the crucible only had 4 modes and no interesting or unique features that set it apart from other multiplayer shooters, and the endgame mostly revolved around making players repeat the aforementioned uninteresting steps over and over again to get more loot. There wasn't that much content for this type of game to begin with (especially if you're considering the quality of the content), so it felt so slim.

I was considering picking up the expansion because I really liked the raid, but I'm honestly soured on the franchise until they start making the average mission/crucible match unique or fun somehow.

  • It had amazing music!

That's one thing Destiny will have over Destiny 2.

But anyway...

It was really disappointing. It had amazing presentation (art and music), and that Bungie gunplay, but everything else was sorely lacking. The game seems to have no identity and it feels like Bungie didn't know what they wanted Destiny to ultimately be. Destiny is more of an idea than a realized product at this point. I really don't think it will have the lasting power Bungie hoped it will have unless a lot of things are fixed; unfortunately, the story itself may be beyond repair.

The really, really stupid thing in all of this is the fact that Bungie wants Destiny to be a social game but this game has more anti-social features than games that aren't even focused on the social aspect.

Destiny went from something I thought had the best chance to be my GotY this year, to something that I almost regret buying and I certainly regret buying the digital collector's edition (I don't even want the expansions at this point).

I have people still trying to get me to play it with them. Zero interest. There are more fun shooters out there, there are more games with better stories, there are better loot drop games, and there are better co op experiences.

my friends don't even bother trying to convince me anymore lol they know I've moved on and don't care to look back.

I understand why Raids don't have matchmaking, but damn does it suck. That's the only thing preventing me from fully enjoying this game.

Bought my brother's PS4 and he threw Destiny in with it. I only started playing a few days ago, picked Warlock. Love the music and the combat feels great - I'm not big on console FPSes, the only ones I've ever actually liked until now were (Bungie's) Halo games.

Kinda sucks that I missed the boat on leveling with everyone else. Everybody on my friends list has long since stopped playing, and I'm at a huge disadvantage in the crucible - I've at least started doing a lot better since I found a shotgun. But it gets a little old dying to exotic weapons when I'm running around with crappy greens/blues. Also I use sunsinger in PVE and voidwalker in PVP, so I'm quite a ways from maxing out my class abilities. Its PVP is definitely no Halo but it's a decent alternative to the regular grind.

Strikes are...well, it keeps giving me the same two over and over. I'd be less bored of them if I got to play different ones. Also those bosses take waaaaayyy too much damage.

Not a fan of the emphasis on dailies, I don't really care for them in any game they exist in. There are some days of the week I can only play for an hour or so, but some I can sit there and grind like crazy. I guess it's had the effect of sending me into the Crucible to clear out those bounties, although some of them seem near-impossible to complete.

Looking forward to trying the raid. Just need a little more gear + some people to show me the ropes.

There's so much potential in the game, and that's sad. I've been playing so slowly, squeezing in time here and there when I could. I only hit lvl 18 today, so the slow drip of content hasn't bothered me.

Because Bungie decided to structure the game w/o voice chat for randoms, I've been playing solo. Obviously, that saps most of my excitement to progress.

But the thing that really gets me - which is especially apparent with upcoming Master Chief collection, is the lack of in game story. At all. Forget the Grimoire cards or the Destiny website.

Not that Halo is MacBeth, but by simply getting Blur Studios to redo the cutscenes, you start to realize how much story was in the Halo series. What would Blur redo here if the game was re-released? 90 percent of the game's story is in the loading screen watching your ship as voiceovers deliver dialogue? Today, I finally watched the cutscene when you bring the head of the Gatekeeper to the brother and sister on Venus, and I actually laughed. The game barely has anything holding it together! I couldn't tell you what's going on, and there are barely any cutscenes or characters? And this is AAA game.

I bought it digitally so I'm stuck with it. Hoping that the DLC adds tons of story, but I doubt it.

I hate the PvP because it doesn't have ANY of what I liked about old Bungie halo PvP, namely, wide open areas, huge variety of weapons, and a multitude of vehicles both air and land based. I only played the PvP matches because I was forced to in the tutorial.

It's a tough game to hate because the mechanics are so sound, the art direction is great, and the musical score -- wow!

But it has no soul.

EDIT - I expected to continue purchasing Co-op story DLC for the next 2 years until Destiny 2.

The thing that really sucks for me is that I am getting really sick of the game, but I feel like I am now inextricably tied to it, because I bought the damn DLC before the game released.

I feel like a moron now.

I recently got it and a PS4. Im a loot whore and its scratched that itch but honestly I am having some buyers remorse. Think I should have just saved my money and played D3 on PC.

Biggest issue is I dont have many PS4 friends and the total lack of communication in the game really hinders your chances of making any. Seems like a terrible system for such a multiplayer focused game.

I traded it in while Gamestop was still offering $40 back.

I don't necessarily regret the 20 hours spent with it, but it's easily one of the most derivative and least memorable games I've ever played. Everything about it just washed over me and left me feeling remarkably empty inside.

This sums up my feelings exactly. I also traded mine in

Still playing, and still turn it on for a hour a day. Probably having a ton of friends to play it with helps as well.

I love the gameplay in it, but the loot system really nags me. Way too random and often times doesn't feel rewarding. I really wish more was done with the PVP because I like what's in there, but really feels like an afterthought compared to what we got with Halo.

I'm still playing it like a full-time job. I did the raid today for the first time. I have 3 characters, all different, that I'm leveling. I'm sorry that so many of you didn't enjoy this game cause I've been loving it.

Traded it in. Very disappointing. Its not that the story is bad, it literally is non existent in this game. Didn't like the pvp and there's no content after you get to 20 and there was no way I was going do that insane grind after I figured out what it was. No way I was to do those boring ass missions over and over a small chance of getting some light gear.

I agree that it's flawed and didn't live up to expectations. I might be wrong but I think a lot of the hate come from people who have no one to play with and expected this to be Mass Effect meets Halo

But I've had a ton of fun playing with friends.

-The gunplay is solid so actually shooting enemies is fun, I don't really care and never really wanted a deep story and I'm fine with it being an excuse to shoot stuff. Just as in Borderlands I hardly even know what the game is about because I was mostly talking and joking around with friends, not being silent listening to the dialog. As a co-op heavy game I'm actually happy the story isn't intrusive, when I want to go shoot enemies with my friends having a ton of cutscenes and extensive dialogs like, say, Mass Effect would have been annoying.

-The balance of new items has been great so far (lv 27), it feels like every so often I get a new weapon or piece of armor. Only now it's starting to get annoyingly grindy with the ascendant materials.

-Graphics and overall presentation are really nice. I like the art direction and the music is great.

-But honestly, what has me enjoying this game a lot is the PVP. I just enjoy how agile characters feel with the double jumps and the overall gunplay is solid so it's a ton of fun, plus bounties to rank up in the crucible keep giving you some fun side objetives and bringing your own gear to multiplayer is nice.
I've heard people saying it's unbalanced and broken, and I honestly never felt it was. Even when I was below lv 10 I felt competitive when playing against people lv 25+.

-My biggest issue with the game is the lack of content. It could just have more missions, more planets, more multiplayer maps, more gear, more strikes, etc. And how grindy it gets in the final 3 levels.
Some of the design choices feel like they wanted it to be an MMO, but it just lacks the content to be one.
Still, as someone who grows tired of online games fairly quickly, Destiny has already given me more hours of gameplay than most shooters so I feel it was worth the $60

PS: Also, I don't get why Diablo 3 gets so much love and this so much Hate.
Both are co-op centric, grind heavy games about getting loot, both have good core gameplay but can grow repetitive, both have mostly bullet sponge bosses, both have bad storylines and both could do with more content. At least one of them has a fun PVP mode

Traded it in and put the money towards Master Chief Collection.

Destiny is mediocre as all hell. It's the perfect example of a game that lacks any soul to it. It doesn't feel like a product that the creators were actually proud of. It just feels like something they shat out for money.

I definitely won't be even touching any future Destiny games unless they're drastically different.

Got each class to 30 (hunter, titan, warlock)

Playing it with a group of irl friends

I have to admit... endgame is very lacking. I spend most of my time in crucible

I don't care for the game all that much but I'm close to 50 hours in and still play daily. Go figure. I don't know why, but I can't stop playing. 😵

My thoughts are... I sold it back to GameStop three days after purchase and put the cash towards my purchase of Driveclub. It was a good decision.

Still playing. Level 29, trying to get to 30.

On one hand, unless you've run through Vault of Glass, and played the weekly nightfalls with your friends, you haven't experienced the best the game has to offer. It is really a different game at the end.

On the other hand, you grind a lot of the same activities over and over to get end game gear, and grind to level that same gear up. It can get repetitive.

I'm going to keep playing, but I understand why others may not. I also think people that have not experienced the end game content cannot speak intelligently, or as a fully informed player on the game as a whole.

My opinion, anyways.

Gave up recently, leaning towards trading it in towards something else just because i think i'm done finally, was fun while it lasted, but i think its time to give it up

I had a blast until around level 23. I enjoyed having the story, getting levels upgrading gear but once I finished the story and did strike missions the sky fell and I just didn't care to log in anymore. I sold it for COD: AW the opening COD mission had more to it than any of the destiny missions and the jsut for the sake of discussion that the player vs player is evenly match, the loading between matching in destiny just killed any momentum.

It was a great game, I got enough hours in it to surpass my $1/hour required in a game just the longevity was lacking and hoping it is corrected down the road. I could easily go back to it down the road.

I'm still playing & will continue to do so because I love the PvP. I have a ton of gripes about it, but I've already put a few hundred hours in so...

Funny thing is that I agree with most of the complaints about it.

while end game is lacking, the ammount of time it takes to get 3 characters to 30 is well worth what you paid. IMHO

Played it the first week and will never touch it again (sadly bought it digitally, so I can't trade it in).

One of the most disappointing video game purchases I can remember.

It's my favorite PVP ever, possibly because I haven't played Halo since 1 on PC.

Halo and Destiny really have nothing in common with each other when it comes to competitive multiplayer. I'm not knocking Destiny's PVP, I'm just noting that it's extremely different from Bungie's past works. I'm not sure I would call that a disappointment for me, even though I don't like Destiny's competitive multiplayer, since I knew what it was like from the moment I played it in the beta. It almost does seem like Bungie was trying to find THE middle ground between Call of Duty and Halo though.

Traded it in. Grind just become too apparent and fast. The story was non-existent and the campaign was pretty bad with protecting dinklebot the whole time.

Has a great shooting core but nothing interesting surrounding it.

Logged in about 220 hours. Got all the legendaries and exotics I wanted. Completed everything, level 30, played crucible a lot.

I'm done playing but I got my money's worth.
My favorite and most fun disappointment of the year.

It was fun for a short time, but it has no legs to stand on.

The entire game felt like a "Shell" of a game that should have been.

The world felt linear and not nearly as open as it should have been (You could walk off a small path and get a "TURN BACK NOW" message.

NPC''s were hardly interactive, aside from vendors that was about all they were good for, no conversations, no dialogue, no choices, it felt like a missed opportunity.

The storyline was uninspired and cliche.

I think for Destiny 2 they really really need to go back to the drawing board.

What most people seem to want out of it is basically a mix of MAss Effect (in terms of rpg, story, npc interaction, characters, etc) and mmorpgs (in terms of open worlds with quest and sidequest).

If they can do that I think they can turn the series around and give us the game a lot of us wanted it to be.

I love it, but I play PVP as exclusively as you can get when the game forces you to PVE occasionally for character progression.

Still playing it. I actually tried to get away and play codAW and came back for more co op. Its a great game to me. Im ready for the dlc big time.

Was fun at first, but quickly became boring. Got to the point where I was only playing it just to have something to play with friends. But even that eventually wasn't enough. I'm contemplating trading it in while the price is still good for it, but I purchased the expansion packs for it on day one like a damn fool. So now I'm trying to figure out should I play the expansions or just go on and lose out on the $30. It isn't like the expansion packs are bringing a ton of content anyway if what the first expansion has is any sign on what the second expansion will be like.

Enjoyed it, let down story wise & simplistic missions but fun core gameplay and beautiful environments, very interested in expansions & sequels since it has potential.

Really enjoyed it. I think I've put in about 60 hours or so and plan on putting more. May buy the first expansion, but will wait on impressions to see how much they add to the game (if it's just another Queen's event like situation, not paying $20 for that).

while end game is lacking, the ammount of time it takes to get 3 characters to 30 is well worth what you paid. IMHO

Playing to 30 itself I feel was mediocre, all we ever do is Vault of Glass and pray to RNG

I like playing the game overall, especially crucible trying to hit 3.0 k/d per game but im ok with 2.0

farming lv28 dailies for ascendent items get very stale :/

Got to level 20 and wanted to try the raid. Read about the grinding required for high level. Nope!
Haven't touched it since.

I will think twice about buying Bungie games from now on

the game might be mediocre whatever, but what's offensive is, as Jeff Gerstmann puts it "the aggressive lack of content." then the Dlc price to content ratio just solidifies the point even further. disgusting

I haven't played it, but I have a friend who was hyped beyond worlds for it and he expected himself to be glued in front of the TV for months. He said he played several hours of it every day, but after I read on GAF that many were disappointed with it I asked him if he really played it. He didn't, he thought it sucked and the reason he didn't tell me was because I would laugh at him.

I seldom hesitate of laughing at others misfortune, and I did laugh obviously. But I feel really, really bad for the guy, he was so incredibly hyped. Lol.

I still am addicted but notice its flaws. Trying to level up some exotics, so log in and run the bounties. Also I just started doing the level 28 daily heroics solo which has added some challenge.

The loot system is terrible. I wish it was like Diablo or even Borderlands, but I don't think Destiny has that deep of a loot table. Not to mention the severe lack of drops on strikes (plus I am lvl29, dropping blue engrams is BS). I need to try the nightfalls and raids but no groups.

Also eff that guy who said "hey let's give pve bounties a chance to drop exotic bounties that force players to play PvP." I'm bad at it, but have fun when I'm not forced to watch my bounty progress go backwards.

Next up, as a pseudo mmo, the events have been lacking and crappy. I was hoping for something more than new bounties and running the existing story missions for Queens Wrath. The fact that maybe Iron Banner will come back before the DLC and that's it for "new content" is ridiculous. I was hoping that Bungie would try to right the wrongs with some new free content that added to the story as well as a "Loot 2.0" style overall but that will never happen.

But, here I am, just getting a second character to 20 (well 25), still playing the game everyday. I don't know why I like it but I do...

done and feeling burned with the digital guardian edition.

Did the raid once, got no gear, is too stressful to have to beg people online for a random group instead of random matchmaking to get anything done. level 28, there isn't much to do, it doesn't have a good loot grind like diablo, so pretty much tapped out. The core shooting is good, but everything else is lacking.
