Jez on the future of Xbox (rumour)

Jokes apart, I'll still get whatever this new "biggest leap ever in a console" new Xbox is because of the digital and physical library that I have accumulated over the decades of owning their consoles.

Oh, and GamePass. Don't have to pay for every first party exclusive, EA play titles, and big 3rd party surprises every now and then.

If this is true, it's the natural result of letting your existing exclusive IPs atrophy to the point of irrelevance, and not investing in big new system selling IPs. With what they paid for Bethesda and ABK, they could have funded more than a dozen big new AAA games...

Hundreds, my man. Hundreds.

So, I have a different point of view on this.

If Xbox software is coming to everything and with the rumors of the next Xbox hardware being a Switch or Steamdeck clone brings up another possibility.

Why are all Surfaces equipped to play Xbox software natively? Going forward this could be an avenue to fight Mac and iPad which are running console quality games now, (slowly). But it is possible.

MS could try to build the brand to teens to college to young adults that get a Surface and do everything including gaming. I believe this is the right strategy for them at this point.

Sadly this is the kind of thing we've been reduced to now is speculating in some wild future where Xbox takes on Ipads and Mac. Even though we know surface sales are cratering. Then I see speculation they are going to take on Steam.

I think we all just need to stop and come to the realization that Xbox is just going to be more of a pub with the hardware out there if you want it. They will maximize revenue and that's that. I have no idea why people want to try and come up with some 4d chess plan that Xbox has to take on some other industry.

Plus I predict they are about to expand the perks of GamePass as well

My personal reason to prefer the Xbox way more over the PlayStation, is because of backwards compatibility.

I like being able to play Tekken 8, and then switch to Dead or Alive 3, with zero hassle.

Not to mention the fact that PlayStation exclusives these days are just a bunch of people wasting their time making a game, when it's so transparent that they wanted to make a movie the whole time.

Shit is boring to me.

Nintendo should’ve done the same years ago. Fuck the toy hardware people live your games. If I could play all big 3 console masts 1st party software on my pc wouldn’t need a console.

They will still have Tommys first console in the form of a dockable Series S type of machine imo

But I totally agree with you, it can't just be a PC with an Xbox logo, it has to be (and sounds like it is) a powerful console with PC functionality without the PC headaches for people who want the console experience

This is what I am quite certain they are looking to do
A new form of S-Mode but instead it will be X-Mode

Basically a gaming PC with a lite Windows Gaming OS but you can take it out of X-Mode to make it into a full PC

Hopefully they use Nvidia because AMD is clearly not going to catch up anytime soon

The hardware team is already on heavy R&D, more than a year on this, and most probably another custom x86 AMD SoC. Both main console and the handheld (like Steam Deck, but way more powerful).

Microsoft would want to distance themselves from nvidia after what daddy Jensen did to them with the original Xbox. It was the main reason why the Xbox 360 launched a year earlier than the PS3, in a hurry, leading to all the RRoD debacle due to short R&D time. It wasn't to one up Sony by a year, which they are planning to do here now.

I still know people who work with a PC all day even from home and want to get away from the PC "feel" when gaming

I don't know how many would buy it but make a machine that is roughly 2x the render power of the upcoming PS5 Pro, make it feel like a console but side load Steam?

I think it has a market
Yep I'm one of those people. I'm not in the market for whatever that box is they are making but that's more because PS is giving me everything I need. I also want nothing to do with MP and PC players. Which is getting harder to avoid but I'll fight the good fight for as long as I can.

I think there is a market for it the same way there is a market for the Steam deck. I don't think does the kind of numbers Xbox will want.

I avoid MP and PC players as well and love that on Playstation I can play PS only players in COD

I am afraid that MS will kill that option now that they own COD though and force everyone into one large pool

I actually love the sound of this... i'll buy two of the powerful models for my wife and i and possibly the dockable model for two of my kids. Or maybe four of the powerful models for the household like we did with the series x? Will have to see how pricing pans out...
Damn, Mr Savage, you must have been responsible for a +1% uptick in Series X sales that month. 🤭

That would mean that they've still haven't learn anything. More power doesn't help them. To me, theyve already made the mistake saying this "biggest leap in console ever" to the public.

Nvidia advantage over AMD is not just about “power”

Is this supposed to make me feel bad?

Those points are all positive if you’re not a die hard xbox fan. Lower prices, frequent sales and access to Steam? Sony Monopoly all day.
They couldn't make enough good games to compete. They tried to corner every market and got none. Look at Nintendo, they do their own thing, without trying to really copy others. They're successful. So, it's hard to say it's a "Monopoly."

I still think Microsoft's failure to secure Game of the Year contenders like Forspoken and Foamstars is the reason for their downfall.

Now there's talk about giving PS5 "Racing Game of the Year" Forza Motorsport?! Have these fools at Microsoft gone insane?! Turn 10 worked their asses off for 6 years to develop Forza, just to give it away. Mother fuckers. I swear, if Google Stadia was still around, I would still be supporting them instead of these clowns at MS.

Just to put it in perspective, Xbox have been waaaaay more interested in bringing games to PS5 than bringing ABK games to GamePass.

There are more Xbox games on PS5 right now than there are ABK games on GamePass.

Let that sink in.

Some of you are in an abusive relationship with Xbox.

I'm fine with all of this. Makes sense. If they continue to make good hardware, I will continue to buy it. An Xbox handheld more powerful than Steam Deck that lets me play all of my back-compat library and new Xbox games would be Day One for me.

I don’t understand this. Is it full fat windows? Is it windows lite? Are they just going to have the XBOX OS run future games as UWP apps? But if you can sideload steam the. That couldn’t be.

Are they…. Going to allow windows to run Xbox games then?

I’m more intrigued by the software situation than the hardware. It opens a LOT of questions. Can I bring my Xbox library to pc? Or is this going to be a dual boot situation on this new Xbox.

What time is it?
The part where I said nobody wanted to give Xbox a chance was more about content creators who weren't/still aren't even interested in Xbox.

Most people don't want to be insufferable cunts and then you have Colt Eastwood.

Lmao he’s already walking it back. The outcome is likely, but Jez is full of shit as usual and only hit the nail on the head by pure accident.

Funny thing is he is just saying stuff that has been speculated about a dozens times already just here on GAF. But I'm sure he will pat himself on the back if he gets one thing out of all that remotely right.

sounds like someone else I know

What's in it for them? Not selling 130 million consoles, losing more than half of their annual revenue, operating their own digital storefront and paying a licensing fee to other platform holders? GTFO

Having said that, I would love achievements, more powerful hardware, analog triggers, and a headphone jack in the Pro controller.

I still don't really buy these "Xbox-branded PC" rumors. The Steam Deck is a viable product because it is tied so tightly with Steam. Every Steam Deck purchase is another customer for Steam and they make money by people spending money on Steam - it's exactly like a console in this regard. Obviously, you can run Windows and non-Steam stores on your Deck but who is doing that? People are mostly buying a Deck to play games in their Steam library and good compatible games.

Obviously, Microsoft has a PC game store, and PC GamePass is growing unlike Xbox, but it's still secondary. If they're going to sell an Xbox-branded PC to someone who then turns around and does all their gaming on Steam, then they're just Dell. And I don't think MS has any desire to be Dell.

I bought a Steam Deck and installed Windows as sole operating system.

Can't play FIFA or Fortnite or Call Of Duty on SteamOS plus many more.

What games do the majority of users* play again???? (*Console and PC of course)

Sometimes we all need to take or nerdy glasses off and think ;)

Call of Duty on a tiny ass screen?

On a Steam Deck? It's Steam games from the Steam store. For sure. Also it's a moot point anyway though, since Steam Deck is a niche device due to size and price point. Totally meaningless distinction.

Majority of PC gamers play on Steam though. Looks like some Call of Duty games on Steam are playable on Steam Deck.....

Wouldn’t this mean they need some layer in windows to run previous gen Xbox games to preserve BC?

Letting people play their old console library on pc would be a slam dunk imo.

I thought the same thing

How many times do people load up their Series consoles and go to places that it needs to remember multiple WiFis?
Well, Warren sure goes on camping trips and brings his Xbox with him, and he plays on the beach while drinking a cold one from his Xbox branded fridge as a tasty Hot Pocket is being nuclearized in his Xbox branded oven. 🙃

Fortnite on a 5" screen?

There is demand for sure, playing some Multiplayer on the go, Xbox can just add a specific UI res and settings when playing in handheld mode

My steam deck is solely a Fortnite and FIFA machine as my son stole it off me!

But a handheld isn't a typical home PC, I was replying when Steam Deck got mentioned.

BLOPS 3 was the last CoD without the anti cheat afaik.

So no one who plays the biggest game on the planet (is it tales from my ass?) will have an interest in playing it on a Hybrid/Handheld

I'm at least 1 lol

It’s ridiculous for sure. They are all clowns led by the kingpin clown himself, Phil Spinster. So pitiful that they have to give their big exclusives away like Forza to the main competition because they are so desperate. Unreal how sad Xbox has become due to the idiots running it.

Ah....I went back and read what you replied to. Makes sense now.

Dual Boot was my first thought, and then value of the deck was my second thought.

Think I paid £240

Gotcha. Yeah, you can get those pretty cheap now.
