JezC:If you can at least theoretically afford a gaming PC but DON'T want to game on PC, what are your reasons for sticking with a console?

Why is that fat slob not asking Nintendo console gamers also, where there is an even bigger gap in fidelity & performance (so by this questions' metrics, more reason to get a PC if you have the $), and they're a large % of the console martket?

Console is objectively a simpler and safer place to play.

Don’t want your kids online? Don’t pay the sub.

Turn on and play. No settings or drivers to deal with. Everything works as designed.

UI is furthest thing from a PC. Yes, that matters.

I do both PC (7900xt) and PS5 (Pro on order) and see the allure of both. I could game full time on one or the other.

I used to upgrade my PC all the time to play games in the early 2000s. New video card, more ram, better audio card e.t.c.

I also used to unlock the bootloader on my android phones in order to run custom ROMs which I'd update either daily or weekly, now I'm on an iPhone 15 Pro.

I also used to drive a stick shift Mazda RX7 and now I drive an automatic Tesla Model 3 Performance.

Sometimes, you just want shit to work and work without having to put much effort into it.

I’m pretty in the middle a lot of the time but I’d say I land on the console end of things overall.

I’ve gamed on PC for over 20 years (33) outside of a few years where I only played games on PS3/360. I get why people move to PC but like with anything it’s not for everybody and is simply personal choice.

Not everybody cares about the positives that PC have over consoles. People bring up mods a lot, but for me I’ve maybe used mods less times then I can count on my hands and the last time was simply a PlayStation prompt mod for Cyberpunk.

Consoles also simply work. You press the button on the controller and you launch the games and outside of fidelity vs performance mods that are common now you just play the game given to you for better or worse. I’m definitely guilty of spending more time playing with settings than actually playing the damn game.

Outside of maybe a damaged disc I’ve never had a console game not work when I pressed play but I’ve definitely had issues with dozens of PC games over the years. Luckily I know enough to fix 95% of them but I fully understand why people wouldn’t want to bother. Plus it’s more and more rare as time goes on.

Again it’s personal preference and people are free to like whatever they like.

I don’t see myself ever really being on a single platform. I prefer PC for certain games and consoles for others.

I once always said that I couldn’t see myself not having an Xbox and outside of a few 360 games via BC I don’t see any reason to own an Xbox so anything can happen.

pretty much every game release on PC is unoptimized
This is not true.
Or, perhaps not FULLY optimized. But calling them unoptimized on PC is often just lazy and wrong.

I definitly understand that for many people consoles are more convenient and a better choice, and that this has nothing to to with money.
But the "fact" that PC games always are unoptimized mess.. that's just not right.
In the last 3 years I can't remember more than maybe 2-3 games that have been better on console. On the other hand, I can count lots of games that just runs a lot better on PC contra the console versions. This is just obvious.

Yep 100% agree here. Just last night, none of my games worked on PC. Figured out that windows replaced my driver with its own. Thankfully, I know PC well enough to troubleshoot but unless you have some background in it, you could be searching for hours.
Console has none of that.

I used to stick with consoles bc of wireless and convenience but now everything PC is wireless and even more convenient than consoles. Everything auto updates. Games and peripherals all are seamless. Gamepad support in everything. Exclusives aren’t exclusive anymore. Pretty much everything hits PC now even from PlayStation.

No reason to stick with consoles besides budget or fear. The experience on pc is superior by a country mile.

When you make statements in absolutes like this, you are wrong. If it were so obvious there wouldn't be hundreds of millions of consumers playing on consoles.

The reason to stick to consoles is convenience of plug and play with less of a hassle factor, preferences in UI that is custom made as a gaming machine, ability to more easily utilize the entertainment center, consistency in performance optimized for fixed hardware, first party games that likely come to the consoles either exclusively in the case of Nintendo or much earlier in the case of Sony, a library of games you bring forward on those platforms, and cheaper cost of entry.

This generation made it clear, the biggest barrier to gaming is the boot time to getting in game. There is a lot of wasted hours messing with launchers, hdr, surround sound, drivers, fresh installs, it’s all there on pc to enjoy.

I’ll probably skip next gen and go pc, but I hope some of this garbage subsides over time.

As a PC gamer, I'd advise console gamers to just stay away from it.

...it turns you into a E-Peen obsessed, FOMO fuckhead.

The constant desire for an extra 20fps, regardless of the cost, is toxic as fuck.

Playing games becomes secondary to the technology.

YES TO THE BOLDED!!! I know my personality. I'd be this toxic in the mind person if I went with PC gaming. Gaming should be about the games first, the technology afterward. The Silent Hill 2 Digital Foundry thread is 100% why I would never be a PC gamer as long as consoles exist.

Those guys simply can not grasp most people prefer Playstation games no matter how much money they have to spend on gaming equipment

It's sad man. MS and their foot soldiers can't figure it out. Nintendo and Playstation gamers are legit happy with their experience on their consoles.

This is some ‘teach the controversy’ shit. Pretty blatant strategy by MS here.

omg what's with the xbox influencers' hard sell with the PC?

To you two guys, I've said it a couple of weeks ago and I'll keep telling people that HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 warned us that this was coming last year. He said...............

Starting the "get a pc" narrative early before PS5 Pro rolls out

I said it months ago its part of the Xbox marching orders to combat the PS5 Pro, just get a PC

Marching orders coming down the pipeline

Just wait the leak price of the Pro is going to be $599 (which I tend to believe and have said all along) and people are going to say something like "If you are willing to spend that just buy a budget gaming PC"

And this post is a DOZY!!!

I was going back through some of my chat logs to make sure I was going to get this date right

MS first got wind of the PS5 Pro in Nov of 2019 and yes that date is right

MS did not chase the Pro idea because the powers that be did in fact think the Series X was going to win every VS game comparison against the PS5 that Sony had to make the Pro in order to match the current Series X

Its likely why Spencer said early on the Series X was their Pro console.

Remember the Series S was going to match the PS5 FUD?

Those were what is called marching orders from HQ.

Phil and Microsoft are totally nuts man. To think the Series X was their "PRO" console is straight retard-like thinking. How and why are they so incompetent?

Classic setup (Desktop play) is something that just doesn't hold any attraction for me anymore.
That said - I've had my PC setup to work in Living room for well over a decade (everything from wireless HDMIs to running CAT to HDMI stations, to having a GPU Dock + Mobile PC), and would argue it's my primary device more often than not.
The thing with it though - is that it always requires 'work' compared to using a console - whether it's troubleshooting, settings optimizations, custom control setups (which are both blessing and a curse of the platform), or just plethora of updates that keep coming through (which are a lot more numerous and messy than console 'system updates' that people sometimes complain about) and occasionally break things.

Basically - it's NICE to have a console (or two) next to it when I don't feel like spending any time outside of jumping into a game, ie. especially when life gets busier.

I played mostly on PC for a decade. When I got older, I became more annoyed with stupid problems.

These days I only play on my couch with a big, dope tv. Doing that with a PC would give me unnecessary headaches.

I guess I'd be that it is a more straightforward and better presented (from an UI and UX standpoint) gaming experience. The existence of console-only features such as widespread DualSense support on PS5 or Quick Resume on Xbox is also a big plus, as well as backwards compatibility with the PS4 and Xbox, X360 and XOne, respectively.

I have a pretty good laptop that can run games well (4070 laptop gpu). I prefer console gaming as a whole (though I dabble with Steam/GOG games) because

- I like playing console games on a big TV. I dont hook up my laptop to my TV because when I'm on my laptop surfing the net, gaming or doing personal work, I like my TV on at the same time to watch sports in the background. And when I play console games, sometimes I'll stream music or an NHL or NBA game from my laptop so I can hear whats going on (too far to see)
- My consoles are hooked up online direct with an ethernet cord. My laptop is on the other side of the room doing wireless. I'm not feeding an ethernet cord 25 ft across a room. And I dont trust wireless PC gaming in MP
- The last EA NHL game on PC was 15 years ago (NHL 09)

For me:

Living room: All consoles.
My room: Gaming PC.

I COULD theoretically set up my PC to play in my front room, but my PC is also my workstation if I have work to do at home, so it's just simpler this way.

I don't have jump through hoops to get a controller to work on console. I have a gaming laptop and despite barely using it programs and emulators that worked perfectly fine just randomly started tanking in performance to the point where they aren't usable anymore. I just don't have the patience or know-how to keep computers from shitting themselves. I'll take worse graphics on console for the convenience of being able to use them whenever I want.

I didnt grow up on PC. I grew up inserting a cartridge, or inserting a disc.. just playing and enjoying everything that came my way. Especially demo discs from magazines.

All the way up to PS3 where i jumped to PC gaming. Most playing Conquest, age of empires, freelancer.. making my way up to a Nvidia 280 GT, gtx?? Cant remember what the exact model was. Playing GTA4 Crysis, Halo2..... I enjoyed pc gaming for a while but something was missing.. my games were at much higher settings compared to consoles at the time but playing games didnt feel the same. Felt like i had more enjoyment building the pc than i did playing them. Constantly playing with settings was also a major gripe.

Ended up selling it my brother and bought the latest playstation at the time.. suddenly i was enjoying it again.. crappy frame rates, lower res, lower everything.. but i didnt care. To this day i just pickup the latest console and enjoy the convenience of it.
Anyway... my crappy short story 😂

Completely disingenuous for him to ride off Jayz two cents without tagging him.

Here it is:

Here's the "build" :

bsMLBtf.jpeg

The absolute state of that power supply and GPU he's had to go with. Also this classy nugget:

gwK4i47.jpeg

He's also comparing DLSS to FSR (which is incorrect because that's not the upscaler to compare it with anymore).

Watch the whole video to draw your own conclusions.

But overall I'll say this is not the mentality we should be advocating in the PC space. Especially not for people who might be new to PC gaming since by telling them a 3060ti will be on par with a PS5 pro you are only setting them up for disappointment since their expectations will be out of whack.

If someone wants to equal the PS5 Pro by building a PC then it can easily be done, but it will cost money. If someone wants to beat the PS5 Pro then it can very easily be done, but again, it will cost money. Instead of being honest you've got these guys doing backflips and making themselves look foolish, all for what? All of this shit reeks of desperation.

We're all eating the same cake, just with different quality icing. And it's much nicer eating that slightly lesser cake at home with all your amenities and creature comforts than at the office/hallway.

It’s 2024, connect that highend PC to your TV and enjoy the good life.

Getting a dedicated PC for the living room is the best investment I’ve made for my gaming hobby. I boot it in Steam big picture mode, only use a controller, it just works, it’s literally like using a console, but I get better graphics and framerates.

Then I use my main PC which sits at a desk in a separate room when I want mouse and keyboard or want to play something violent while the family is up.

Still have consoles for the occasional exclusive, like Astro Bot, but otherwise I’ve fully transitioned from console-only to PC gaming. Been an amazing journey.

I think some PC gamers assume most of us don’t have a PC so they can get away with this. I mainly play on consoles, I do have a PC. It’s 2024, it’s windows 11, and it’s still a pain in the ass. For every chore that I’ve lost like making a mem-maker there are two new ones.

I love Civ with mods. It’s so much better UX than the vanilla one. Yet the most hours I have on Civ are in my iPad.

Its crazy how we're entering 2025 soon and there are some console folks who doesn't know you can connect PC to a TV.

Same reason as most. Want as frictionless and hassle free experience as possible. As well as easy couch Co op etc.

Plug 'n play. Simple as that. I'm 40 years old. I don't have time for bullshits.
What's with the i'm 40 years old so don't have time trend recently? I'm 40 something and almost dead is what it sounds like to me.
I'm 43 and have time to work fulltime with 2 to 6 fulldays extra each month, have kids, a wife, and manage my time to give them the attention the deserve and have time to game and handle whatever bullshit comes my way. Even have time to search pcgamingwiki.com if need be, yeah i know how do i do it right? Amazing.

It's so funny because Phil keeps saying that Sony isn't their competitor but you can see that the ps5 is staying rent free in Phil's head.

The whole 'you can build a PC for almost as little money as the Ps5 Pro' is so fucking stupid. No you can't. That's never been possible with a brand new console.

The gap has certainly narrowed over the generations, and the amount of horseshit you now have to go through with consoles (downloading updates, graphics settings getting more granular etc.) has narrowed that gap further, but the PC still remains a more complicated thing to use for gaming.

Personally, I've moved over just to PC gaming (or laptop in my case) because that gap really isn't enough for me any more.

Where is the pain the ass then?

I use my PC every day:

1. push power button
2. power on the controller
3. use the controller to flick through the games
4. click on a game and it starts
5. play the game
6. exit the game by clicking quit in the menu
7. back in the games library again

Is this painful?

This is Steam big picture mode.

I try to avoid other launcher’s games or set them up to start from Steam. Can start Gamepass games from Steam, Epic games.

In rare occasions when a keyboard is needed I use a wireless keyboard with touch pad. That’s annoying. But hardly a pain in the ass. And it’s rare enough that the keyboard is always dusty.

There are a few steps between 4. and 5. There always is. Fucking around with settings to get it running just rights is always a part of it. Controller support is also not always that intuitive.

For me, i work behind a desk with a pc 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. I just don't want that experience when i want to unwind at home. With my Ps5 it was just “choose performance” and Go. With the Pro pre- ordered its just Go.

I can afford pc gaming, no problem, I shelled out 1800 for an Alienware pc back in the day when I was new to building shit. I just don't want to go back to pc. Ever. My library is deep on playstation, and I enjoy the many many games available to me through my collection and other options. Some of my best memories come from playing these games.

Also, I don't want to give Microsoft any of my money. When Microsoft inevitably destroyed Nokia, via Stephen elop, they really pissed me off.

There is usually an auto detect functionality doing that for you, if it isn’t you just go there and set it to preset Ultra, similar to how you set your console to performance.

I’ve not once had to do anything with the controller settings, using a Xbox controller.
And Steam is great at informing about controller support at the store page.

If there is no controller support, then yeah, then it’s okay to get grumpy. Some games still work with some overlay, had it happen last night on The Takeover, had to press Xbox and use the stick to move the mouse pointer to an accept button, after that it worked fine.

I have the Pro preordered as well but that’s just to not be in a subpar experience if I can’t wait for a port. 99% of all games are played on PC now. You’ll never see me say it’s worth the money but this thread tries to dodge the cost.

My argument is mainly about the things I posted above that quote. There was a thread a while back you might wanna glance at though about this topic:

PCs are big square boxes, which are in most cases too big for any custom shelving (e.g. floating), which means flooring it next to a subwoofer (or looking at new units). Arsing about with lots of third party apps, or resyncing controllers to switch on from the couch, or using mobile apps is just a poor experience too. Then we get into the other argument of sff or micro atx which pushes prices higher and limits compatible/powerful hardware.

I agree you can get an approximation of the experience but realistically on average once a month you're going to have to do some tampering for a number of various reasons, not always related to steam of the game itself.

And to go back to my original point, none of that effort improves any of the quality criteria I mention. Playing Cyberpunk? Man it looks great with that RT but wtf is with those walking animations. A premium to still see peds walk like they shit themselves? A premium to still see the same A.I. in Far Cry 6? With those mentioned sacrifices and the tending overhead? Just ain't worth it for most of us.

I would be interested in how many of those preferring consoles now are fatigued techies/developers etc. as that seems to make up a large contingent.
