Funny you say that I'm always annoyed at how "gay looking" they make these pioneering characters sometimes. Star Trek Discovery basically has a very Westernized gay-looking and gay-sounding dude as the first main gay character on ST.

I always wonder if they would have the balls do do something like say, two regular dudes turning out to be gay. Cold Pursuit did this and definitely put a smile on my face.

Not that's there anything wrong with girly or campy gay characters, but it seems like there is a narrow view of what a gay person looks and sounds like.

Orville did this. The "all male" alien race were pretty much all burly strong black dudes, nary a lisp, hand twirl, or pastel color in sight. There was, IIRC, some homoerotic imagery (like the simulation with a bunch of glistening naked dudes) but I'll allow it

There are a couple "stealth" gay characters. The police chief in The Flash for example. Other than a few mentions and then the inevitable wedding (if I am remembering it correctly) you would never know that guy was gay.

Its even more complicated with trans actors. Are the characters they play supposed to be trans? Or just a normal gender? Sometimes it is hard to tell (Hari Nef as Blythe in YOU and Laverne Cox in JOLT are 2 examples where the character seems to be a cisgendered woman or it just doesn't matter). Given the brouhaha over ethnic and LGT characters being played by matching actors, you'd think a trans actor would be confined to playing trans characters (it's only fair.....right?) but you never know.

So this is basically the new “popular character dies but not really” trope from the 90’s brought back as “popular character is gay, but kinda not really,” isn’t it?

Seems like it’s just there to get people talking about comics hoping some people will actually buy them.

I guess so few people buy comics that going activist might actually increase sales. I personally don't give a shit, but I sympathize with parents who buy comic books for their children. The amount of kid shit I have to sensor just because they sneak in propaganda is unreal.

Are there any new characters these days?

I’m a straight guy but I feel like it’s a slap in the face to the communities itself by not giving them representation with new powerful characters and just reusing characters for money gains from the reactions from people.

This goes for all woke stuff. Create better content and quit rebooting stuff by giving the communities hand me down characters.

This makes me think of team America “everyone has aids” but as “everyone is gay”

The headline just reads better on clickbait sites when they say "Superman now has a boyfriend" or "Superman comes out as bisexual"


And we get alot of new characters who "represent" some stick some dont like with all new characters.
Generally if the character is actually good all the external shit doesnt matter, one of the last things I think about when a character is introduced is their sexuality or race....lets see some cool shit or a good story and im sold.
