Acclaimed actor Jude Law will play Albus Dumbledore in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts.

The second film in the Fantastic Beasts series will show Dumbledore decades before he became Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

At this point in the story he is the wizarding school’s Transfiguration professor and a contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald – the Dark wizard we met in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, played by Johnny Depp.

Dumbledore was referenced in the first film, when it was revealed that Newt Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts because of an accident with a magical creature. It was Dumbledore who argued against his expulsion.

In the latest edition of the Hogwarts Library book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt says in his foreword that, ‘Albus Dumbledore was something more than a schoolteacher to me,’ but to reveal more would breach the Official Magical Secrets Act as well as his former teacher’s confidence.

The stage is set for Dumbledore to make his presence known and returning director David Yates said, ‘Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I’ve long admired and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him. I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.’

Great choice, hoping he make liberal use of his magic like they did in the first movie. Always wanted to see a Prime Dumbledore.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I didn't see the first movie but Johnny Depp is Grindelwald? That is either incredibly inspired casting or really off casting.

I had an amusing moment where I told my friend this news and we both began typing and I realized we were both Googling who Jude Law is at the same time hehehehe

I hope he does a good job in Fantastic Beasts!

Jude is great in basically everything he's ever done, so sounds good.

He's in the movie for all of about 15 seconds, so hard to say.

That sounds like...Really bad casting!

Jude Law seems like a bad fit for this role based on the performances I've seen of him.

Unless he somehow really pushes himself into foreign territory as an actor,I don't see how this is good casting.

Great pick. Shame about Depp, should have totally kept Farrell.

Yeah, Farrel really inhabited his character.Awesome on screen presence.

Its a shame.

I wanted the dude from Mad Men who is Richard Harris's son (and whose name escapes me right now) but this is a pretty rock solid choice as well.

I wonder if they're going to make Dumbledore's sexuality explicit in the movie. I know that's something Rowling received a lot of flak for.

Not they, she. She is writing all the scripts for the new trilogy. I am sure she will tackle it in one way or another.

Seems like it from this article.

"Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was." Rowling has said. In the sequel, “you will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man. We’ll see him at that formative period of his life."

Odd casting, and the first one wasn't very good so I dunno. But hey, maybe they'll do better on more familiar ground. And Gambon absolutely nailed Dumbledore under this director, so yeah, maybe.

I really, really didn't like Eddie Redmayne in that movie. Dunno why, I understand he was playing it as an extremely introverted - possibly autistic or with aspergers - character, but it just came across as "this is what all nerds are like" and I found it grating. I didn't really like any of the characters in the movie, to be honest.

The visuals and animals and setting and everything else was really great about the movie but for whatever reason I just really didn't enjoy it at all, whereas I am a huge harry potter fan (book and movies) and still get a big smile on my face every time I see the Harry Potter theme music start up in the beginning of the movie.

Hope the second movie is better, I can't believe they wanna string this out to 5 movies.

I have ZERO complaints on this casting. It's perfect.

Shame about Johnny Depp playing Grindelwald though, it should have been Colin Farrell...
