There's like 10 different wrongs colliding here.

Gawker main site is horrid and deserve it, but it's also somehow depressing that a jury probably put a pile of people out of jobs because they just liked the idea of giving a racist wrestling celebrity a huge pile of cash.

Ah, so Gaters.

Speaking of which, a second glance at this topic reveals there's a fair few of them right here. Goodie.

Yeah, Gawker have done some awful shit but I can't help but feel like if this was any other company not embroiled in GG shit, with the most popular GG community named after them, the reaction would be very different.

Nope. All the utterly disgusting shit Gawker has done over the years has lead to this. They have no one to blame but themselves and they deserve it.

Nobody likes Gawker. GG just happens to be another (particularly shitty) group of people that hates them.

I didn't say Gawker was innocent. I said gloating and posting gifs celebrating their demise is a bit harsh.

Why shouldn't people celebrate a sleazy tabloid getting their just desserts for their horrible actions? People tend to be happy when justice is served. It's marred slightly by Hogan being in the winning camp.

Bollocks to that. Check my post history for how vociferous I've been against Gators.

There's something disgusting about people reveling in glee at a racist earning 115m after an awful tabloid leaked a sex tape of him, and that this could result in a bunch of people losing their jobs. This is all kind of horrible, people finding joy shitting on Gawker and laughing at Hogan is terrible.

We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I don't care who Hogan is.
I don't care who works for Gawker.
Posting a sex tape has nothing to do with providing valuable information to the public. You can't just say/write/post whatever you want and use the first amendment as if it was some get ouf jail card for whatever click generating trash you want to publish.
Hogan is right, Gawker is wrong.

I don't like the media can be held liable for publishing factual damaging information. Many times there are videos or information published about somebody or something that is damaging but that can be a good thing. If we try to judge the information on its benefit to society it becomes an arbitrary and slippery slope.

Can someone like Ray Rice sue the media for damages because they publish video of him him beating his wife?
So you are fine with it if a company would publish videos or photos of you online with no permission at all, when the material involved isn't for the public good?

A judge ordered them to take it down after making that call. Gawker ignored it.

Showing the video didn't add anything for the public good. The racist stuff Hogan said in there could still be published also without showing the video.

I honestly feel terrible for all the people who work at Gawker-owned sites. None of them had any part in this. It was all on the bosses, and their hubris.

People laughed in my face when I said Hulk Hogan would win early on. As the trial was progressing all Gawker did was come across worse and worse. Scummy publication that deserve everything they got in my opinion.

I've been in bed for 20 hours sick, my drug addled roommate broke into my room and destroyed my tv yesterday, and soon I'm going to have to get well enough to go take care of my seriously ill mother, and this is exactly what I needed to feel better.

Thank God for Hulk Hogan.

This. I do feel genuinely bad for what is probably going to be a lot of people losing their jobs. At the same time when you have Gawker doing vile shit dating back years (examples already linked earlier like this one it's also hard to not take some kind of satisfaction in their downfall.

Same goes for the individual employees; as others have mentioned many of them have expressed disgusting behavior (like supporting the article in the link above and being upset about it getting taken down as highlighted in this GAF thread ) and you'd like to think anyone working there knew what was going on. On the other hand if you need a job you need a job, and outside of employees who have personally made less than admirable remarks publicly I'm going to assume that's the case for most of them, and I honestly hope they land on their feet.

Kinda shitty all around regardless.

I'm celebrating Gawker's loss more than Bollea's win. Perhaps the ruling will dissuade trash sites from publishing sex tapes and intimate images without the consent of those depicted.

Awww. :(

Dude is talented. Hope he recovers swiftly.

didn't Gawker condemn people for showing 'the fappening' images

but is fine with the sex tape?

Ya'll are cold blooded. Yea Gawker was in the wrong here, but a lot of good people could lose their jobs over this. Over something they had no part in.

Please. Im not the one you should look at regarding the responsibility of keeping those people employed. Look at Gawker themselves when they decided to ignore a judges order. Why weren't THEY thinking about all the good people who could lose their jobs then?

Pfft.

Edit: Whew lord, if you all think you have to be a mouth breathing neckbearded GG'er to dislike Gawker you haven't spent enough time on the internet. They are garbage; aint nobody thinking about those reddit posting manchildren.

Yeah, and while I think no matter what the reaction to this would be negative, the vitriolic fury and glee at Gawker maybe being shut down has, I think, been amplified by a large amount of GG hate for them

Really wasn't accusing anyone in particular, was just posing a larger question.

Cool, so you're pro revenge porn then? I mean if you're going to ignore that this tape was stolen, posted without either parties permission, told to taken down by a judge, and then not, it kinda seems like you're pro revenge porn, or at least as long as the person is shitty.

Gawker fucked up massively with this, but Hulk isn't a hero. While it might not be a crime, I think saying what he said admist sex with a married woman is morally much worse.

Damn, get ready for the leg drop it's coming.

no one gives a fuck about the sex tape itself, the only issue is the racist shit. not sure how you can reward him for that

Even racists have rights and expect them to not be violated.

If I shoot a racist illegally, I'll still be arrested and tried for a crime

Exactly. Almost any other opponent in almost any other circumstance and I'd have been rooting against Hulk. This case? Hulk was the babyface.

I have never been fond of Hulk Hogan as a person, but anyone saying stuff like "That racist deserves nothing" needs to get real. If you took out the names of the parties involved this would be a case of one party illegally posting a sex tape of somebody which is a massive violation of personal privacy and then refusing to take it down after a court order. All the while they are acting like they're in the right and refuse to bear responsibility for their actions. There is no way that party shouldn't be held accountable for what they did.

I dont much of this case. I assume Gawker released a sex tape without his permission?
$115 million is crazy money. I thought that ESPN lady got a massive payout for her hotel vid and now I see this.

Hulk honestly is more deserving of it, legally, given that his career really WAS destroyed by it. Granted, he pretty much deserves to get fucked for all the racist shit, but the law doesn't deal in karma.

Why so much money though ? People get killed or end up disabled and they get a few millions but this guy gets 115M$ for revenge porn ?

Now I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a big compensation and I'm glad Gawker is getting fucked over this but I don't see why you would award him more than 10M$.

They basically killed his ability to earn any real amount of money as Hulk Hogan for the rest of his life. That's worth a pretty penny. Probably not $115 million, but I'd say something bigger than $10 million isn't unreasonable.
