No, I don't think I'm ignorant at all. I just don't like rap music. Why does this bother you so much? So salty and defensive over a random person's opinion on the Internet.
I know a couple who are really into country music and were thrilled to get tickets to some guy I've never heard of. They were a bit surprised that I didn't know this artist who was selling out a world tour, but they also realize that there are millions of people who don't like country music. They don't care about this. It's understood that their genre of preference is disliked by many.

It really seems to bug a lot of fans of rap that there are millions of people who don't like the genre. Better to just learn to deal with it because that type of widespread opinion isn't going to change. Like what you like, and don't get bothered by others who don't like what you like.

Broader question: how many longtime musicians still seem to have their finger on the pulse of modern music past age 65? David Bowie and John Cale seem like they could hold a conversation on what's current in music without sounding ridiculously out-of-touch, but people like them might be the exception.

A lot of people just dig their heels into what they started out on and tune everything else out. I hope that doesn't happen to me when I get older. I really don't.

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?

That's what annoys me personally when I hear people say " X genre is crap"

I'm not too worried. My uncle is closing on 50 and is still constantly discovering new music.

McCartney. Obviously doesn't really show in most of his music, but working with Kanye and Rihanna and playing with acts like MGMT and Alabama Shakes shows he has casual idea of popular modern music.

David Byrne for sure would be a great example, though he's a few years shy of 65. He curated this year's a Meltdown Festival and it's phenomenal looking. Newcomers like Anna Calvi and Sinkane mixed in with acts like Sun O))), Young Marble Giants and his tribute to William Onyeabor.

Mainstream Hip Hop is music for young people. Is anybody sincerely shocked that Keith Richards doesn't like it? I don't want to hear about "but underground is where it's at bruh.", Keith is talking about mainstream, and I agree with him completely. A whole lot of words to say very little. Generic sounding beats that are produced on computers, and are sampled half the time. I feel like I'm too old to listen to most mainstream Hip Hop, and I'm 29.

:(

And I hate to join the dick riding party but Kendrick is pretty damn mainstream and goes against that whole idea.

Eh, it's incomprehensible to me, but some people are capable of writing off entire genres based on their myopic experience or broad stereotypes. You see it with every form of art.

What about mainstream anything? Pop, rock... it's all dog shit on the mainstream level.

Rap -- so many words, so little said

Lyrics from the song "B*tch" written by Keith Richards said:
I'm feeling drunk, juiced up and sloppy
Ain't touched a drink all night
I'm feeling hungry, can't see the reason
Just ate a horse meat pie
Yeah when you call my name
I salivate like a Pavlov dog
Yeah when you lay me out

Lyrics from the song "Brand New Car" written by Keith Richards said:
I got a brand new car
And I like to drive real hard
I got a brand new car
And I'm feeling good so far
Take her on the highway for a little spin
I want to see the kind of shape she's in
And I got a brand new star
Jack her up baby, go on, open the hood
I want to check if her oil smells good
Mmmm...smells like caviar
Give her some stick
Push her too far
Right to the brink
Hear the motor running
Yeah, she's right in sink
Tell me if she's thirsty
Would she like a drink
And I'm stopping at this bar
Slinky like a panther
You can hear her purr
Touch her on the seat
Go on, feel the fur
And I got a brand new star
Feel the juice
Foot to the floor
Take some abuse
I got a brand new car
And I drive her in the dark
And I got a brand new car
I think I'll stop and park

Lyrics from the song "Verbal Intercourse" said:
Through the lights cameras and action, glamour glitters and gold
I unfold the scroll, plant seeds to stampede the globe
When I'm deceased, by then the beast arise like yeast
to conquer peace leaving savages to roam in the streets
Live on the run, police paying me to give in my gun
Trick my Wisdom, with the system that imprisoned my son
Smoke a gold leaf I hold heat, nonchalantly
I'm grungy, but things I do is real it never haunts me
while, funny style n***** roll in the pile
Rooster heads profile on a bus to Riker's Isle
Holdin weed inside they p**** with they minds on the
pretty things in life, props is a true thug's wife
It's like a cycle, n**** come home, some'll go in
Do a bullet, come back, do the same s*** again
From the womb to the tomb, presume the unpredictable
Guns salute life, rapidly, that's the ritual

Lyrics from the song "Lose Yourself" written by Eminem said:
The soul's escaping, through this hole that is gaping
This world is mine for the taking
Make me king, as we move toward a new world order
A normal life is boring, but superstardom's close to post mortem
It only grows harder, homie grows hotter
He blows. It's all over. These hoes is all on him
Coast to coast shows, he's known as the globetrotter
Lonely roads, God only knows
He's grown farther from home, he's no father
He goes home and barely knows his own daughter
But hold your nose 'cause here goes the cold water
His hoes don't want him no more, he's cold product
They moved on to the next schmoe who flows
He nose dove and sold nada
So the soap opera is told and unfolds
I suppose it's old partner but the beat goes on
Da da dum da dum da da da da

These kids with their damn computers and hippity hop think they know art.

Um, no. I'm not even saying all mainstream hip hop is shit. I'm saying most of it is hard to listen to as a 30 year old. It's embarrassingly bad. Cocky, overly aggressive, materialistic, over sexualized, and only sounds good when you turn the bass up.

Guitar, bass, drums, singer >>>>>>>>>> rapper, electronic beats

The same could be said about 90% of mainstream rock, Rolling Stones included.

I don't claim to be savvy with hip hop but wouldn't Run The Jewels be considered mainstream? Obviously not at Kanye levels but they've gotten a bunch of exposure and they sound pretty damn good to me. Then again I tend to listen to metal, rock, and electronic so what do I know...

I'm asking you to articulate your retorts.

I said the Rolling Stones make mere pop music - which I stand behind. I used Pink Floyd as an example of band that is not that. Here's what the Rolling Stones don't do: use atypical time signatures, keys or instruments; experiment with new styles; create tightly woven concept albums; or impress you with their virtuosity. What they do do is make tight R&B rock albums in standard chord progressions, in standard keys, and with standard instruments. There isn't anything inherently wrong with this. Most of the Beatles songs are also "mere pop songs". But I do find it a little ironic that Keith Richards is shitting on other bands (particularly Black Sabbath who were particularly inventive for their time) and styles when his band isn't exactly the shining pinnacle of artistry and novelty.

Atypical instruments? You have obviously never listened to Aftermath, between the the buttons, or Satanic majesties. If you had, you'd realize that Brian Jones played tons of different instruments all over those albums.. Sitar, marimbas, harpsichord, mellotron, flute, dulcimer, slide guitar, plus more...

To dismiss the stones as an imitative pop band is incredibly stupid. Yet you went there.

But all the rock music about doing drugs and banging chicks, that's totally fine?

It's fine to not like a genre, it's the way people justify it. If someone jsut said "Nah I haven't heard any rap that I've enjoyed, i don't think it's my kind of music." That's fine, same with any genre, but let's not pretend the genre you like is "above" all this.

p.s. How we hating' on the Stones now? I'm putting Let It Bleed On.

Fascinating coming from a guy who's a C guitar player at best, whose band had loads of ghost writers, and made mere imitative pop music.

I mostly agree with him about Black Sabbath and Metallica though.

Please name the loads of ghost writers too. Can't wait to hear this.

So all mainstream rock and pop then.

Anyone who just blindly "agrees" with him is ignorant, there is good and bad in all music, from blues to rock to hip hop to metal to folk to new wave to new age to classical...so on and so forth

He's an old man making shitty general statements about stuff he doesn't really give a shit about, because why he needed something to say to get attention.

The Rolling Stones were a great band that have slowly become irrelevant with age, yes they will always have a base of fans, myself included, but they aren't drawing anyone else in.

Plus it would be more shocking if Kieth Richards didn't have anything shitty to say...

"So many words, so little said"

As opposed to those deep philosophical rolling stones lyrics.

Seriously.

You can start me up,
You can start me up I'll never stop
I've been running hot
You got me just about to blow my top
You can start me up, you can start me up,
I'll never stop, never stop, never stop

I think i got an epiphany.

I mean rap can be one if the most technically impressive forms of music imo. But I love Rolling Stones, surprised so many people dislike them.

Sure, but just imagine if blue-based rock and roll got even a fraction of the needling condescension that gets heaped on rap music

What does 'Let It Bleed' by The Rolling Stones, 'Master of Puppets' by Metallica, 'Black Sabbath' by Black Sabbath, and 'Death Certificate' by Ice Cube all have in common to me? It's that I am pretty sure everyone of them would make by top 10 albums of all-time.

That said Black Sabbath and even Metallica, have had a bigger influence on music than The Rolling Stones.

Nah they suck too.

Lol the beatles created the ultimate fanboys. You can't possibly think they're crap, you must be trying to be special.

Thank God I don't have your taste in music.

Then explain to me how their music is more artistically relevant than say Pink Floyd.

All I know is The Rolling Stones are a better pure rock n' roll band, but Pink Floyd is a better band (and they are my all-time favorite group).

Are people obligated to like every genre of music?

People who dislike rap often happen to be incredibly condescending and uninformed when they say their opinion. Its fine if you don't like it but the idea that rap has nothing of value to say in a genre where lyrics are the most important aspect is foolish.

The way my friends talk about rap for example is entirely over the top for a genre they do not have the first clue about. I don't like country. . . And that's pretty much my entire opinion on the genre. You rarely find that in hip hop haters and its annoying.

The issue you speak of, people being condescending and uniformed in their opinion, is one of the biggest issues I have with the internet today. Everything from console warriors to the religious to people using the term iSheep to even the Metallica haters because of their anti-Napster stance*. My main thing is there is nothing wrong with not liking something as long as you remember opinions are subjective, not an objective truth.

*Why doesn't Dr. Dre (who also filed suite) get the heat that Metallica got over this? Mostly because Lars comes across as a douche I guess. Honestly I think Metallica have every right to be upset over Napster. A demo of a song that haven't even released yet was being played on the radio, and it was traced back to Napster. I've would of been pissed too.

I dunno, I assume because Dre has like an empire or some shit? I dunno the Metalica story so its hard for me to comment unfortunately.

But yeah, I can respect opinions. Even strong ones that don't back down if there is substance. But its annoying to hear X thing that I know nothimg about is shit and you like shit if you enjoy it. You get that a lot with rap.

With all due respect to The Rolling Stones and their contribution to music. His comments make me hate him and says a lot about him as a person. Music is art and art has many and many forms.

Also, i can't believe he says Rap is done on computers when the majority of the albums, even those made by the rolling stones, are touched in some ways by a computer before release. His comments are beyond retarded, was he high on some dope shit or something ? He's disrespectful to many great artists in the Hip-Hop genre, sad to see that from a musician like him.

I don't understand why old people have that hate toward anything that is done on a computer, like that's not real music. His comments are like "i don't like cars, i prefer horses".

Then let me tell you Mr.Richards, people love music done on a computer and it's not going anywhere.

There is rap played by live performance bands and rock done entirely on computers. It is not really an inherent trait for either genre

That's a bit of wry humour. Reading comprehension please.

My reasing comprehension is fine; I don't find it funny in the least bit. Not from him. Hell, I don't find it funny when anyone says that garbage. Screams, "black people and n**gas" (Damn you Chris Rock for making that a thing).

That's a bit of wry humour. Reading comprehension please.

He was talking specifically about gangster rappers killing each other.

I understood the reference. It really is not funny. Maybe he needs to see what living in the hood is like to maybe grasp why actual ganster rap is so violent and aggressive. These are the types of comments that people who dont know anythimg about hip hop and rap think are witty and clever but are actually just dumb.

These are the stupid comments people who like rap constantly have to hear. Like, life in the hood wih gangs and people killing each other over territory is not in the least bit funny. Music that actually talks about this shit is seen as glorifying violence as opposed to statimg reality. I think it isnt funny, its actually just clueless ignorance.

He makes some good points and in any case is allowed his opinion, but then what has his band done of note since the early to mid 70s... they're a bunch of geriatrics who get by playing hit songs from 40 years ago.

to be fair the new single they released like, 6 months ago? was good, like pretty damn good
