Is that someone else rapping on Collect Calls or is it another one of Kendrick's accents?

Because if it's Kendrick, then holy shit that flow is insane! He should use it more often.

Just listened to it again - definitely shut. The whole skit is great. And it leads into one of my favorite songs this year. I was one of the people who said they would parse out the skits. Nope. The only thing I skip on this entire album is Poetic Justice.

Holy fuck. Haven't been into this kind of stuff all year, but finally got it and sat down for a listen. Had to pause it half way through to make this post. This album is amazing. Rather LttP than miss the party of the year

The second half is even better, IMO. Also, make sure you listen to Black Boy Fly (one of the deluxe edition tracks). Shit gives me goosebumps every time I hear
"I wasn't jealous of the talents they got / I was terrified they'd be the last black boys to fly"

Love the way he says thank God after that line too.

For those who are LTTP. There are some songs that were released in 2012 that should have been on it, or were on the deluxe that you should listen to.
Cartoons and Cereal
Black Boy Fly
The Recipe
Ignorance is Bliss (I just added this one cause you should listen to it. Older track though).

I've only heard "Backseat Freestyle", but I thought it was terrible. His voice is such a drag, all slurry and monotonous, sounds like he's drunk.

Is that track a good representation of the album? Or is it quite eclectic?

That track is definitely not indicative of Kendrick. I love it, but it just fits in the context of the album. His voice is different, that is for sure. Couldn't hurt to try the album though.

It's that chorus, where the pitch of his voice raises ever so slightly, it's horrendous!

"All my life I want money and power

Respect my mind or die from lead shower

I pray my dick get big as the Eiffel Tower

So I can fuck the world for 72 hours"

Super whack lyrics too.

:/

If you don't like him changing the pitch of his voice you will never enjoy Kendrick Lamar lol. He does it throughout the album. But still give it a listen because it's a good album.

Cool. I'll give it a try.

I usually like really tight, rhythmic rapping like Azealia Banks. The kind of rapping where you think, "even if I knew all the words, there is no way I could flow like that!" Kendrick just seems to slur slowly, there seems to be little technical skill to his approach.

Anyway, I'm commenting after only one track, there are a few tracks I hated on Azealia's album, so I'll give it a fair shot.

yeah, more cohesive shit like this is rarer these days, so you tend to forget: you can play tracks as singles, but it's not gonna flow the same way. you can do it, but i don't recommend just playing track 6 of dark side of the moon outta nowhere either, unless the crowd is super familiar with the album.

Actually, Us and Them is probably the second most accessible track that can be played on its own, behind "Money".

backseat is one of if not my favorite tracks on the album. kendrick spazzing & not giving a fuck. basically the antithesis of the rest of the album

SMDH, He's suppose to sound like that on Backseat Freestyle it's part of the story of a really cohesive concept album. And how are you going to judge the lyrics when you like god-awful rappers like Azealia Banks. GKMC is entering top twenty greatest albums of all time discussions, do yourself a favor and listen to the whole, because judging one song would be like judging one scene of Boyz N The Hood.

Backseat Freestyle is awful. Damn the context. The song just sucks. Very disappointed in Hit-Boy and Kendrick.

At least Real is good for like the first minute until you realize that annoying ass hook is gonna get beat into the ground over the next 7 minutes

If you listen to Backseat Freestyle and take it too seriously you're gonna have a bad time. Personally I think it's a nice fun banger for the whip.

That track is the complete opposite of the rest of the album. Kendrick never does a song like that. Except when he's with his homies.

I get the context and how it belongs or whatever, but yup, at the end of the day, it sucks.

Context matters. I didn't like the song before I heard the album, now I like it.

I liked Backseat Freestyle before I heard it in the context of the album. there it got even better, but I don't see why a guy having fun rapping about stupid shit in double and then triple time is so repulsive. let loose.

I knew there was a reason I always liked you.

From what I can tell, it makes much more sense in the context of the album. I think it's supposed to be a callback to his first time rapping. In the backseat of a car with his homies who put a beat CD on. It's kind of like his first attempt at a rap chest-puff. Makes sense at least. It's more like the lyrics (hook at least) are ironic/self-aware in their whackness.

Am I right or wrong about that? Haven't read the whole thread, I'm a newcomer.

I like Hit-Boy, but I dont like the beat to BSF. Clique is way better. And Im all for a hype/fun track, but BSF just isnt very good in that regard either (not to mention lyrics).

Real grows on you, BSF doesnt.

youre right.

im still not excusing it because CONTEXT!!! it's a shit song.

Yeah, BSF usually gets skipped. As part of the album its great but on its own I feel it doesn't shine.

Clearly it was created to fit the theme/feel of the album because Kendrick knows how to make good confident/hype/fun/upbeat/whateveryouwannacallit tracks. See Hol' Up and Spiteful Chant.

Black Boy Fly is an incredible track too. Love this album. Still prefer Section 80 though.

Agreed 100%. I've listened to Backseat Freestyle maybe...3 times

Real has some great verses but that chorus...god dammit. Sounds like some backpacker shit from 2004

I'll let Backseat Freestyle play but I wouldn't actually put it on on its own

At this point, either I'll start at the beginning and listen to the whole thing or, if I'm feeling lazy with the skips I'll start from The Art of Peer Pressure and stop after Dying of Thirst. Real sounds like some Dee-1 shit and I don't like Compton enough to sit through it

Love the album, love the storytelling. I m very impressed in how much of a story teller Kendrick can be while maintaining a great flow. It's a classic, imo, when you compare it to the albums that his peers are putting out. Bitch don't kill my vibe is definitey my most favorite track. That beat is just so chill.
