SMDH, He's suppose to sound like that on Backseat Freestyle it's part of the story of a really cohesive concept album. And how are you going to judge the lyrics when you like god-awful rappers like Azealia Banks. GKMC is entering top twenty greatest albums of all time discussions, do yourself a favor and listen to the whole, because judging one song would be like judging one scene of Boyz N The Hood.

Anyway, I'm commenting after only one track, there are a few tracks I hated on Azealia's album, so I'll give it a fair shot.
Um, yeah thanks, I'll do that.

:/

I turn the album off when Compton starts up :p Decent song, just doesn't flow with everything else on the album.

yep It kinda ruins the whole storytelling vibe. Ok song but they should have put it on the bonus disc. BSF isn't very good either but at least it kinda makes sense to put it on the album. Beyatch BEYATCH. when I think about I kinda like it :D

Nah Compton is sick.

Still it would be so perfect without it.

The message at the end that TDE called aaaand scene.

But hey that's really just nitpicking, it's not like the album is terrible because of it. just would be even more perfect.

btw: I hope that the success of GKMC makes people realize how awesome concept/storytelling albums are cause ever since I first heard this I love them:

I've only heard "Backseat Freestyle", but I thought it was terrible. His voice is such a drag, all slurry and monotonous, sounds like he's drunk.

Is that track a good representation of the album? Or is it quite eclectic?

I used to hate it but now it's one of my favorites. It's a kind of a goofball song but it works.

Fuck yes. Probably the most underrated album in hip hop history IMO. I sometimes even forget about because no one else I know ever mentions Masta Ace. I'll never understand why he never had more success.

Me neither. His lack of success is probably due to label issues. I mean dude released 3 classics and 2 very strong albums plus the EMC one which also is very very good. I think I'm the only one who even mentions Son of Yvonne in the AOTY thread. And he's a brilliant stage performer.

Seems crazy to me. GKMC got more boring with each successive listen. Or maybe I'm the crazy one here.

Also a little surprised by Frank Ocean at 2. I was pretty positive about Channel Orange when it came out, but it sort of lost some of its luster as time went on. Actually think that Miguel record is a better R&B album.

...but this shit is the opposite of boring. What a classic with near flawless production. Real shame that Masta Ace never truly caught on.

Compton's also great and you people are crazy. It does break the story-telling, personal vibe of the rest of the tracks in a way. But that's because the entire album is about Kendrick learning to be a real man and be positive and help those around him, championing his city in the process. The final track is him running a victory lap for that same city.

Pitchfork's heavier hip-hop focus is weird to me. I mean I'll be honest, I get my music from blogs so I've heard of artists through pitchfork and other sites. But for some reason p4k oscillating so far into trying to put out this image of being really in touch with rap doesn't always seem sincere. awno.
I don't get hating Pitchfork as a site though. I get disliking some of the reviewers on it, but their top lists are really no masturbatory than those on any other site of any kind. And there're a few good critics on there. I like cohen, even if I vehemently disagree with him sometimes. He writes well.

I can't take a site that gives Camp a 1.6 and Flockaveli a 8.0 seriously.

to be fair, camp sucks pretty badly. not 1.6-badly I don't think, but even a 1.6 isn't extreme enough for me to be surprised by it. it's that bad. and that's coming from someone who was a fan of CG before culdesac. culdesac and ep are still great, in fact. Cheesy, but great. camp is just cheesy and grating.

Sounds about right.

well we agree to disagree then. Not calling Camp great but if that album is a 1.6 then some records should get a -5.0.

They got that on the mark though.
I don't think its a coincidence that Gambino went in the opposite direction w/ his narrative for Royalty which turned out pretty well.
Nobody trying to hear them arrested development raps.

wat? royalty was horrible outside a few tracks. Oh well, guess that's why I'm not welcome in the hh thread anymore.

But don't wanna derail the thread with any more Gambino talk, all hail King Kendrick :D

Camp is garbage and Pitchfork got it right. If you like Channel Orange and resort to calling GKMC boring you are losing it. Also I think you guys are assuming too much about 2013, which could be an incredible year. I mean Ghostface, Danny Brown, Jay Rock, and Q are releasing albums

To those who don't feel Compton doesn't fit the vibe:
GKMD is a short film by Kendrick Lamar. Compton is the end credits.
Mind blown?

oh shit how did I not know Q had another album coming. excited for that.

I don't get how one can not like Compton.

It's the perfect triumphant ending; the present-Kendrick declares himself as the new king of the West and represents his city on such a glorious instrumental together with the man that put Compton on the map.

I love the last bit of this song so much, sums up the album so nicely: "Ain't no city quite like mine, yeaaaah.." - m.A.A.dest city, folks.
Also the last skit which is in fact the very first one - pretty nice touch.

I feel like a king when listening to this one
