Killzone: Shadow Fall |OT| Nothing Stops This Rain

Mkay. I can never remember chapter numbers. I just got through the freefall part with the buildings. I think it's right after The Handler or something. Man that took quite a few tries. It wasn't that bad though. It definitely should not have been in the game, but this part seems to have really gotten so much vitriol from people. I think it was maybe because my cousin and I were taking turns on it that it didn't seem so bad. I thought the part right before it where you had to defend the platform was much more annoying. I never realized you could jump into that giant turret machine thing. I died so many times there. I also really hated the part where you had to
escort the scientist by floating beside her container.
That part was really annoying to me.

I tried that opening to chapter 8, quickly died about 5 times and quit. Maybe after that shit second half of chapter 7 my patience was low. I hated that container section, and then took forever to figure out the turret. Heck, it took awhile just to figure out all the guns they provide in that part suck except for one... Amazing how I was thinking this was a solid, fun game. Now, fuck this game. Just a few sections managed to ruin the game for me. I'd say at least multiplayer is fun, because it is, but the lack of voice chat is crazy.

If you're facing an entire team of supports on the other team, you're absolutely fucked and have no chance of winning. They can use turrets, air support, spawn beacons, and revives endlessly to spawn camp you.

It's funny because someone earlier was complaining that nobody was playing the support class.

I feel like I always have to play support. I don't mind too much since I enjoy it, but sometimes I want to play some other classes but my team will lose because no one else will put down spawn points or turrets.

a few questions for the people that finished it:

-how long is the campaign?
-does it have a "real" ending? (compared to kz3)
-any collectibles/unlockables?
-how is the replay value?

-Standard 10 hours I would say
-Yes
-Collectibles such as audio logs/comics. No unlockables
-Replay value is in multiplayer. It's pretty fun. Single player replay varies by person. I personally have no interest in replaying the campaign.

I played up to around chapter 6 or so, and I wasn't particularly impressed with anything apart from the visuals and how fun it is to zipline around everywhere. Multiplayer any good?

I feel the exact same way.

I don't fucking get it. The game showers you in points and completed challenges by playing as a support. You get some of the best abilities. You get some of the best guns. You can start a revive train and steamroll the other team. My Spawn Beacon became level 10 within only a few games - free trophy! Why does no one play support?

Still not digging the multiplayer, might rush trough the campaign and trade it in for AC4 depending on how much I can get for it.

Interesting. I don't like the objective based multiplayer, but straight up team deathmatch seems to be finding a good place with me. Number of players playing multi is super low though. I think it was sub 2,000 total when I was online earlier. Not sure if I'm a fan of 12 v 12, but the maps seem to work for the number of players. My k/d is under 1.0 so far, but I really think I'm liking it and it will keep me from picking up COD.

When I finished shadow fall on hard I was initially pissed off that there wasn't an elite difficulty. But really, I don't see myself playing the SP again so whatever.

Killzone 2 was the peak of this series.

Killzone Liberation is secretly the best game in the franchise.

Digital Foundry just posted a deep-dive into the tech used in Killzone : Shadow Fall.

I'd make a thread, but it was too much techjargon for me to comprehend and make a summary of in case requested.

Just had a match like that in Penthouse. I think two thirds of our team were support, we had constant turrets and revives everywhere. If a team doesn't adapt they'll get rolled.

How is the input delay, guy's? I guess in MP it's almost completely gone due to being 60fps?

I have only played the single player (and I'm only on chapter 4) but it gets bad at times. Even at the best of times there's weird aim acceleration that makes aiming sluggish and inaccurate compared to other shooters. Also half the time when I try to reload my gun it doesn't work so I have to press the reload button twice.

I have no clue how it controls in multiplayer.

The reload button doesn't work half the time? Sounds like your controller sensitivity is broken, as I'm sure that would have been picked up on. I mean the input delay thing has been done to death since KZ2, but I've never heard of reload issues.

Not as deep as he thinks
I have a love and hate relationship with the multiplayer. Mostly hate. Team Deathmatch in particular is so awful. The good team will just camp by your base for the whole match and since there's only one spawn point (because apparently no one uses the support class in TDM) it just becomes a death trap. Warzone is fun when you find good players who will work as a team. If you're facing a good team and your randoms suck, there's really no point in trying because you'll get dominated easily, which sucks because that's a rare thing to find...

I had that exact same reload issue with KZ2 as well. It happens with both my controllers and I have no issue reloading in BF4 or Blacklight. It's only a problem with Killzone.

My controller sensitivity is fine too, I've messed around with it and it just never feels completely right. It's not as bad as it is in KZ2 (
except in chapter 4 during the part in the bombed out building where it dips well below 30 FPS
) but it also doesn't feel nearly as smooth as other shooters.

Beat this last night. Absolutely rubbish ending, just terrible. I have no idea what they were thinking with that. There was no pay off and it just falls flat.

Just rating the single player it is definitely a 5 or 6 out of 10.

I've Platinum'd KZ2 and never had reload issues like you're describing. Is it possible you're just very sensitive to these things and are unconsciously overestimating how often this happens?

you can't reload while firing.
most every other shooter panic mashing reload will interrupt firing, this game doesn't...you have to let off the trigger first.

might be your issue.

Interesting titbit on their AA solution.

Adding to the quality is Guerrilla's chosen anti-aliasing solution. Back in the February reveal, FXAA was utilised with the firm hinting at a more refined TMAA solution under development in Sony's Advanced Technology Group. TMAA is now TSSAA - temporal super-sampling anti-aliasing.

"It is still very similar to FXAA. It's not FXAA, it's a similar filter but much higher quality," explains Michal Valient.

"It's still screen-space - TSSAA - we've lost the sub-sampling of depth. We had that sub-sampling as well, reconstructing edges with that but it was costly and didn't really add that much so we removed that," adds van der Leeuw.

"We collect samples from the previous frames and try to blend that into the mix on a basis that is a derivative of FXAA. It's something that blends in a little bit of temporal math, trying to get something from previous frames."

"We're very careful in what we use from the previous frames. If it's a good frame, why throw it away? We basically gather as much of the pixels from the previous frames that you can apply to this one as well and re-project them," adds Valient. "We get more samples per pixels. Normally you'd need to apply super-sampling or multi-sampling to get a similar effect. We try to get the data from the previous frame."

I find it strange people are calling this game challenging on Hard. It was a cake walk and the easiest game in the entire series.

You people would be crying a river if you tried storming Varsari Palace in KZ2 on elite, or pulling hair out going for the Grand Valor Cross in KZ2 MP. Hard probably rates in about normal on KZ2.

I agree with you, I had to restart close to 100 times trying to kill those rocket launcher assholes in the balcony and then Radec in KZ2

Had my first non laggy game and it was a revelation. People actually died when I shot them!

Less than a week until I've got people less than 12000km away to play with

Just finished this game up for SP.

Graphics are really amazing in some sections, pretty great in others, and meh in some spots. Meh spots I found were limited to the smaller interiors, so no big deal. Lens flare overuse is going to be a pet peeve for me this gen. It is nice in some spots, but in others it was WAY over done. Apparently VSA doesn't have anti-glare technology on their goggles/visors. It is really irritating when a giant glare is taking up 95% of your screen.

Gameplay was ok, but pretty uneven in some spots. There were some glaring AI issues throughout the game. I didn't get the same sense of AI prowess here that I got from KZ2.

A lot of the little game play features were rarely used. Like taking over little bots to disable cameras. Most of the time it just made more sense to shoot the cameras.

I used the OWL quite a bit less than I thought I would. Most of the OWL use came later on when I encountered the shielded enemies. The AI was never good enough that I felt that I had to use the OWL as a distraction to flank. Most of the time I could bowl straight through enemies or just pull them to a doorway and pick them off when they stacked up there (more AI issues).

The free-fall sections were not too terrible, but I did cuss a few times with the collapsing building level. Once I figured out what to do, it was no problems though. It is actually quite astounding graphically once you can focus on the visuals rather than fighting with the controls.

The story had potential....but potential is all it had. Echo was nice, and the most compelling character in the game. I would have liked to see more interaction with the Hlghast characters introduced. More Lady Visari, more of the torture dude. I fucking hated Tyran and the scientist chicks who's name I don't even care to remember. I had a hard time getting invested in any of the characters except Echo.

The SP game is a solid 6.5/10, with most of those marks going for eye candy and Echo. I may wrangle through it on hard to see if the AI improves, but by the end of the game, I was glad it was over and I could move on to other things. I may not even get into the multiplayer.

Why am I'm I getting the feeling that lone wolves keep running into the enemy base and getting mowed down by the supper turrets, then turning around saying turrets are OP'd?

Turrets are pests, but nothing more. Smart people can swat them down easily.

Dinging the game for not having auto-aim and not a level up system in MP?
Come on Joe, those are GOOD things, not bad.

Can't watch the video right now, but it's ridiculous if he docked points for those things. Not enough hand holding and grinding apparently.

i'd be happy for them to leave the series alone. They're never going to hit that KZ2 multiplayer sweetspot again.

The AA tech in Shadowfall is top of the line. Theyve seriously got almost zero aliasing in a native 1080p game. Ive had games with more aliasing even when I downsample from 2160p/4k on PC games!! (looking at you, Battlefield 3/4)

Bravo to Guerrilla. Everyone else needs to borrow some of their tech so they can make mindblowing visuals as well with minimal aliasing. I am sure Naughty Dog's next game will be aliasing-free as well.. ;)

hey anyone having trouble with getting the preorder skins to show up in game.

I went ahead and bought one of the skins on the store and after I did that, all the skins showed up in the OWL skin select menu. It sucks that you have to spend money, but at least you will have access to the skins now. I bought the pink tiger skin specifically.

whoever designed the skydiving bullshit in chapter 8 should be fucking flogged. there are too many segments in this game where cheap and shitty gameplay were the orders of the day.

Literally the last 1/3 of the game turns into cheap segments that are either plagued by ridiculous deaths or just "heres a room filled with 40 enemies, go."

I loved the game up until Chapter 7, it took a really big drop after that for me.

Ending Spoilers:
That may have been the worst stealth section I've ever played in a game. Love the idea of a mission after/during credits, but that was the furthest thing from enjoyable.

Man I am really having a hard time beating this game. I find it SO boring. Game looks awesome and has an interesting premise. But sadly they don't do anything with it, instead just give you dumb AI to fight and the typical corridor shooter.

I know most wanted an more open world game, and more options to take out the enemies in levels, but I really feel it hurts this game. The big set pieces are now gone. Instead, the set pieces are now the graphics and levels. I kind of wish this was more scripted or linear. Least that way I knew where I had to go and to do and not have to hit up on the D Pad every two seconds. It's nice that the game doesn't hold your hand, but at the same time, if I have to keep hitting up on the D Pad, it might as well just hold my hand.

I feel the reviews this game got were rightfully so. Which is a shame, cause I loved the other games. I give them credit for trying something new with the series. But I wish they more went into the history of the universe than just a plain old shooter with really bad pacing.

Is this game giving any other PS4s a serious workout? I'm on my third system from Amazon and my decibel reader's telling me I'm hitting 60db. Is that right? wtf

Yeah, mine gets loud with KZ, though that's been the case with both KZ2 and KZ3 on PS3 so I expected it. The noise seems to level off after a while of playing for me, though.

Can't agree at all. This is the first KZ campaign I've actually finished since KZ1. What I played of KZ3 was a scripted, mindless rollercoaster ride, and I never bothered touching KZ2 after KZ1 dragged itself out to excruciating monotony. Making the levels the focus is absolutely the better option, but I agree they got much more constrained as the game continued, yet still better than KZ3's set piece theater. The story is all about the history too, not sure what was missing for you there.

There's no Elite difficulty? Hard is the hardest difficulty? Damn I had no idea. It's not that I'm dying to replay some of the broken segments on a harder difficulty, I'm just surprised. I guess I'm one chapter away from beating it on "Elite" then.

So far I think I'm having more fun with BF4 multiplayer. Killzone should have had a deep clan/squad system to separate itself somehow.

I will say that the map design (MP) is fantastic though. Haven't had enough hands on time with either to say for sure which one I think is better though.

It really is...I started off not liking the game(KZ:SF) but once you get the premise of it, the open ended nature of it, you realize it has a lot of potential. Also, the A.I. in the beginning is completely different from the middle and end of the game. They are much more rush-down towards the middle like chapter 4 and on.

I had high hopes for this game and then came back down to earth when I realized they only had 2 years to make it on new hardware. This is what happens with launch titles and this is a damn good one.

KZ2 is considered the best campaign by far, and I tend to agree. It's a wild marine Rollercoaster ride, but it's all gameplay and best described as a blitz to the Reichstag. "It can be infuriating on higher levels due to it's pretty smart AI and a few areas that will throw re-spawning enemies at you until you move up.

Still, it was really good.

might be your issue.

It's probably that then. I always reload instantly if I kill someone and it's safe to do so and I wouldn't doubt if I'm still firing a last bullet when I try to reload. It's annoying having to double press the reload button. That's a really poor design decision.

[edit] I did some testing and it's not even that. It seems to just not register reloads when you ADS while reloading sometimes.

I've heard that, never gave it a proper chance after KZ1 left such a bad taste. Only reason I even touched Shadowfall's campaign was out of curiosity for Owl, and I wish they'd played around with it more. With armor upgrades and levels designed around it's abilities it could've been very prominent instead of the simpler tool that it is.
