Kingdom Hearts: Does your Gummi Ship actually look like something?

Because mine sure as hell doesn't. But it's strong and fast as hell because it's literally 30 pieces of armor, a cockpit, four guns, and five engines all stuck together. So glad Chain of Memories came out so that I could remember this game and how neat it was
ZOMG fighting the Sleeping Beauty black dragon

I f-cking loathed KH PS2 when I first played it. Now I'm LOVING KH CoM, and it's even gotten me to restart and attempt to play the original once again. I'm farther now than I was when I last quit, and I'm liking that more than I did. I wish the combat was better though. :o

Re: KH CoM... Starting off a fight with initiative, a Ragnarok, an Ars Arcananum, and finally a Sonic Blade... it's MURDER on the poor Heartless! Hahahaahh.

I completely agree, I find it incredibly hard to stay interest and have a generally fun time in KH, but am just loving COM a ton. I really hope KH2 offers a similar experience.

Me too! Sadly, a completely different developer made CoM, whereas I imagine the original KH team is following up with KH2.

I just started playing KH tonight. I've never played it before. I got 3 hours in.

That Gummi ship interface is a horrible mess and I don't know what the HELL I am doing. The tutorial only served to make things worse. My brother and father were freaking out the entire time I was playing the game when they saw Final Fantasy stuff then Goofy and Donald ran by. Up until that point they kept referring to the game as "Gay boy versus the rats."

I just made a giant block and called it the borg ship and added lots of weapons. Worked great, took 5 mins

Took about 4 attempts, but Hook went down in flames! What the hell is up with the 100 Acre Wood stage...?

My friend Marc, who loves metal music, made a massive all black death gummi that kicked the shit out of everything. It's the only reason he hasn't deleted his Kingdom Hearts save file.

I can certainly understand the complaints about the Gummi ship portion of the game, but how anyone can say it completely ruins the game or anything is a mystery to me. I mean, I NEVER upgraded the ship and never had trouble getting through any of the stages, it was just annoying having to go through them period. Is there any word if the Gummi ship stuff is in KH2 or not?

I just started playing through KH again, and I'm enjoying it just as much as the first time through. The only thing that urks me nowadays about the control scheme is that I've become used to independent camera control on the right analog stick (like i R&C or Jak) and the limited rotational camera control on the shoulder buttons kind of annoys me now.

The gummi ship was like a nail in the coffin for this games delightful design. I mean , the main game is littered with tiny boxed in environments and excessive combat. Why the tarzan section alone with the swinging vines... ooh boy that was awful awful. I think I made it to the start of the little mermaid portion of the game but I didnt' save while in there. Due to the lack of saving I forgot how to even get to that new world and have to fly the gummi ship like 3 times just to get back there and argh.

That's... only sorta true. The programming and graphics for Chain of Memories were done at Jupiter, but planning was by members of the original KH team with Nomura, Kanemori and Watanabe as leads. It's similar to how Dragon Quest games are developed.

Yes it is.

the entire gummi ship concept was idiotic in kh. my sister's first words on the gummi ship were "what the fuck is this? can i eat it?"

I like CoM, but I don't want another card based battle Kingdom Hearts. I liked the direction KH PS2 was going, it just has a lot of kinks it needs to iron out.

What would kingdom hearts 2 need to manage in order to get me to enjoy the title ?

1- The camera, as teiresis mentioned it's not fully controllable , fix this issue , it shouldn't be too hard

2- The environments, even if square had to make less of them , each environment should actually feel like a world of its own , instead of 3 rooms and 2 doors with a couple of boss fights. Give me a massive environment to wander about in each world , with an actual dungeon to navigate

3- The gummi ship portion needs to be made more enjoyable, get the guys behind einhander to craft levels or something, there is no reason that something that eats up so much time can't be more entertaining

4- give the game out for free to make up for having bought the first game at all.

Maybe I just didn't get far enough in the original yet, but it's degraded into a senseless button masher for me. The combat just isn't interesting. CoM took the better elements of the combat and added a nice layer of depth and strategy to it with the cards. In particular, I love the concept of "unlocking" insane new abilities by pulling off properly coordinated "sleights" with the cards. Certainly better than equipping roll-dodges and fire spells from the original. (Though the prize-vaccuum skill in the original rocked.)

The icing on the cake is the priority system, how some attacks can "break" other attacks. The sleights and the card breaking are what make the CoM combat system work so well imho. Like I said, perhaps I didn't play far enough into KH1, but it seemed to lack anything like that. The closest thing to strategy I noticed in the original was having to go around and attacking the tubbies from behind... and CoM has that as well!

The camera is too zoomed in, makes it a lot harder to see enemies and whatnot. Yes, fix the camera.
They should also make it more clear where to go. I got lost in the Tarzan world and the Aladdin world for example, because I wasn't sure of where to go. I had to consult gamefaqs eventually. Is that my fault or lazy game design though? I'm not sure, but I can't recall the last time I got stuck in an RPG like that.
And no, the gummi ship portion doesn't need to be enjoyable. It's not needed at all. It was utterly pointless, I never altered my ship once....hell, in 95 % of the levels I never even MOVED my ship and just kept shooting. And I never died once, or came even close to it. If they still want gummi ship levels, they should completely rework it for KH2 from the ground up.
And...and and and...they should add a button making it possible to skip f'ing cutscenes in the game. :)

You didn't get far enough. Most of the attack based sleights are straight out of KH. KH also had most of those character summons as well. I think Cloud is the only new one in CoM. I don't think CoM was any less button mashy than KH. I just finished CoM this morning and my main strategy was to just use attack cards that I had been upgrading throughout the game. The only real "strategy" I used was to start using Curaga during the
final battle with Riku, due to his really cheap attack
.

Heh, well, then that certainly bodes well for the rest of KH1, then. I guess it just starts off much slower than CoM did. What about the attack priority (card break) system of CoM. Does KH have some kind of equivalent?

If I never have to even deal with the Gummi Ship Garage ever again, I can die happily. I went through the game with the default Gummi Ship, and I beat it just fine.

I'd much rather Square Enix devote time to proper level design in KH2. I'm fond of the first game, but there are some worlds that were just a plain, good, old-fashioned chore to complete.

Hmmm, the closest thing I can think of is tech points. If you attack an enemy during their attack at the right time, you cancel out their attack, leaving them wide open and you earn some tech points. Tech points in this case are just experience points with a special name. =P

The easiest example I can think of is on Destiny Islands with Tidus. The timing for him works like this: Lock on to him from a little bit of a distance and the lock on color should be kind of dimmed. When he runs at you to attack, the lock-on indicator will turn bright at one point. If you attack then, your sword will deflect his and you'll earn 2 tech points (2 exp).

Definitely go back and play the game through if you can. I know it can start off somewhat slow, but it starts to pick up once you get out of the initial selection of worlds and I thought it was really good as it neared the end. Then again, I really enjoyed the game and all CoM did was make me want the sequel even more.

Oh, I know about the Tech points, but that's more about the timing rather than say, customizing your arsenal and exploiting enemy weaknesses. Good way for experience, though.

When I first got KH (about a year ago), I got to Wonderland, hated the combat in general and that level specifically, and stopped. I recently (2 weeks ago) started over and got past Wonderland, but stopped playing because I was told that certain decisions in the game's opening segments determines how quickly you level up. In an attempt to minimize the later-game level grinding, I stopped again and plan to start over, again. But at this point, that's not likely until mid-next year (got a 2 week trip overseas coming up in a few days.)

Thanks for the info, however. CoM has certainly rekindled my interest in the original, and I plan on picking it up and finishing it. I have higher hopes for KH2, after playing this one.
