Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning - Review Thread

Yeah. They're working their asses off for sure. Great to see that they're dedicated to building a strong new IP.

All teams are dedicated to building a strong new IP. Very few are so open and use Web 2.0. Most of them talk to fans through press-releases and watered-down inteviews.

IGN has a very in depth ongoing review at their website. Check it out Here

Indeed, it's Reckoning's gameplay that keeps rising to the top for me, because it's just so much better and far beyond what its WRPG contemporaries have done. It's arcadey, to be sure, but when you compare it to the three popular fantasy RPGs of our time -- Skyrim, Dark Souls and Dragon Age -- Reckoning easily outclasses all of them in the gameplay department. The competition isn't even remotely close in any respect.

Win.

I think the IGN reviewer has a very set idea of what qualifies as "three popular fantasy RPGs of our time"... One of the biggest pc rpg launches of the last few years, except for Skyrim of course, doesnt merrit a mentioned?

The Witcher 2 had an awesome world, hard and meaningful action oriented combat that forced you to use traps, potions and strategy instead of just mashing buttons...

I define meaningful content as main quest + guild quests + deadra quests + civil war + about 90% of the sidequests. To me the rest is just filler or a copypasta of the before mentioned stuff. Apart from the Thieves Guild you can blaze through it pretty fast. When I finished the above stuff I was pretty much a god (playing on normal), so all the misc objectives and mini-quests aren't really interesting anymore for me.

I´m sure you did all, and I agree that that´s sums about the meaningful content in the game, I´m just doubting your time with 58 hours for that, that´s all. I think you go the time wrong.

But that´s OT so I´ll let that rest now.

I can understand why Witcher 2 has not been mentioned considering that game has not been released for consoles yet. Considering the console base is unfortunately the place to be when it comes down the popularity I can understand his top 3. Not to mention a very small fact that this game seems to cater a whole lot towards console gamers.

Yeah, i was playing the demo again last night on my ps3 and i admit the game is perfect to be played laying down on the couch with a controller in hand. My earlier misgiving about the inventory have been laid to rest somewhat, tho i still think you have to click to many times to reach the weapons / armor menus.

Still, i can´t get used to the camera, it´s too zoomed in and i can´t get a notion of the surrounding environment. I hope the fix they are alluding to will hit consoles as well as the pc. .. if that patch ever comes to pass.

Concerning the rpg market and consoles, i think the problem is more centered on the review sites, especially mediocre ones like IGN, compare their reviews with ones from eurogamer and you can´t shake the feeling that IGN is being run by a bunch of frat house idiots.

Eh, just think he's using the broadest reference points rather than any sort of statement on quality. Witcher franchise isn't as big as Dragon Age or Elder Scrolls.

Might have a point with Dark Souls. No clue if that's sold more than Witcher 2.

A million copies sold in less than 2 months for a pc exclusive rpg is more than enough to be considered highly successful. :)

IGN describes the experience how I saw it, arcadey but it's an action RPG basically. Awesome to basically hear that. Even Witcher 2 didn't feel this fun.

And I hope there aren't fence sitters just waiting for the a terrible review to say "will buy on sale" or some kind of justification to not buying it. It's pretty awesome and deserves sales.

People talk about wanting Dark Souls (rightfully so), but this game fills that RPG void so good. I would argue that nothing I've even seen from a game like ME3 has had me as excited to play a game as much as this. People love them that sci-fi motif but I will take the fun and art and huge world of Reckoning over ME3 at this point.

It won't be a day 1 but it should be bought by next Thursday.

Can anyone confirm the size of the Steam DL?

I'll come right out and say it: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will be discussed when Game of the Year 2012 rolls around. It has brought the conversation about what combat can be in the role-playing genre to the forefront and sets the bar exceptionally high for its future contemporaries in the genre. Closing Comments: IGN Review

That's a pretty bold statement.

I don't think that's much of a choice, but that's just me. -.-

You can get the first three for bomba prices in two months. I'd take the Vita.

Will still buy Amalur though but not day 1. Too much stuff coming out.

That's a pretty bold statement.

Indeed. Apart from Portal 2 GotY was pretty much GotNovember. Amalur will be dropped like a stone come GotY season. Not hating on the game because it looks like a great effort but Q1 titles are pretty much DoA (for GotY) if you're not some extreme high profile like Re4 and ME2 were.

Choices choices. Amalur, Darkness II and SSX this month or a PSVita and Uncharted. Sigh.....

Well, from what Ive seen of everything, Ill just say I have Amalur, D2, and SSX all preordered. Ill get a vita, but down the road. KoA is easily the most excited Ive been for a game in awhile, D2's demo actually sold me on it (thought it was significantly better than D1), and every video Ive seen on SSX makes it look ridiculously fun and awesome.

8.5 Presentation
Amalur totes an impressive story penned by one of the great fantasy authors of our time, and it takes place in a fantastic fictional world.

R.A. Salvatore is one of the great fantasy authors of our time? Really IGN? REALLY?

I'm really psyched for this game myself, but GOTY does sound like a bit much. But, It's probably not the 7.9 or 8.0 game that early reviewers made it out to be either.

I was hoping we would get all the reviews today, but it looks like EA gave them an exclusive exception.

Pretty much tells me I don't need to read the review, since the demo told me all I needed to know about the art (awful) and gameplay (possibly amazing) I was only interested in how he viewed the story.

Damn. Some pretty high praise. Not sure if it'll live up to all of it, but it should be fun if the demo is anything to go by.

Never said it wasn't successful. It simply isn't as big as the aforementioned franchises.

Better combat than Dark Souls? We sure about that? Can someone give me an honest answer? I'm hard pressed to believe something out there captures the power and weight of weapon/shield combat like Dark Souls.

Pretty much this! Combat in Dark Souls was absolutely top-notch, and unless the combat in Amalur gets remarkably better between the demo, then the statement stands as absolutely false.

Just based on the demo... nah. It's nowhere near as tactile. It's more Darksiders than Dark Souls.

Still impressive for a game of this scope.

Two different types of combat. Dark Souls is more realistic, whereas Reckoning is Arcady. It's a preference thing.

I love when a different game that I had no interest or info ends up being a nice game. I may have check this game when it's cheaper, it gave me some Baldur's Gate vibe don't know why.

And now we hypocritically jump on the IGN bandwagon.

This game is getting 7/8s across the board. IGN giving it a 9 makes them look like fools as always. (this is the excuse you can use in case the game is bad)

There's a review embargo. It's not getting anything across the board, yet.

I will never ever buy a new Fable game. Been burned too many times. I hope this one satisfies me for awhile.

I definitely need to check myself because the last game I was following this closely was the original Fable and I was severely disappointed in that game and Fable 3.

I canceled my Vita pre-order because I'm like 90% sure there will either be a $50 price drop this Fall or a really good deal with $50 dollar gift card. It's probably not gonna sell well at all so they're gonna have to drop price in the Fall. There's also no must haves in the line-up. If I were you I'd go with the 3 games. SSX looks so fun, I'm so very jealous (no PC version).

It's not trying to be like Dark Souls in terms of combat. It's going for something completely different. I still have no idea why people are comparing Dark Souls and Reckoning.

Yeah the combat is a step in the right direction. Slow it down, tone it down a bit, fix the camera, and it would be amazing. The really need to remove that flame from the staff you get in the demo, it's really annoying when you have it equipped.

I really wish SWTOR had combat like this. I'd like a Star Wars WRPG with combat similar to this game.

I actually think the Witcher 2 has sold about as much now on PC as Dark Souls on both consoles combined. it doesn't really matter anyway, he just named Dark Souls, Skyrim and Dragon Age because those were some of biggest RPGs of last year.

The demo was fun, I'll most likely get it, I hope it doesn't become too MMO-like later on though.

IMO pretty much any MMO would be better with much more active combat. It's one of the reasons I can't get into them at all.

I've come to the realization that many Dark Souls/Demon's Souls fans seem to want every RPG to be exactly like it. I love both DS games, but they have their place, and are their own thing. It does not help that reviewers have a hard on for comparing every game in the same genre to each other, even if they are completely different types of experiences.

I'm of the opinion that most games can stand on their own, but if you play a game like DS, or TES, or Witcher , and then expect every RPG coming to be exactly like them your just setting yourself up for disappointment.
