Leisure Suit Larry Kickstarter by Replay Games [Ended, $673K funded]

if they bought the rights for the franchise why codemasters has any saying on this?

i don't really understand it...
I don't either.. does Codemasters AKA "Big Software" (as they put it) have a stake in this Kickstarter pot, or future sales? Why do they still have a developer/publisher relationship at all if the Larry IP has been acquired, what do they have to prove by making a great remake to them? That whole response in the FAQ seems poorly worded at best and misleading at worst.

So did I. It had its charm in places.

Lesbian nights is amazing:

The swimming sperm conversation mechanic was pretty awesome too. Iterating on that has potential. Overall it was pretty much just smooth moves or failing depending on how good you did. The odd random icon to say something funny had it's moments.

"you're so pretty you could be a...a...a *sees maple leaf coming up, makes sure to run the sperm over it* Cheerleader in the Canadian Football League! You could be a Roughrider or an Argonaut..."

If only doing those things didn't penalize you.

Al Lowe just posted up a video that explains some of it. They only licensed the Larry IP, and only for a remake. They have to convince Codemasters that they can make a remake. Also notes that replay is composed entirely of Sierra Online veterans, whatever that means.

I just looked at the about us page on Replay's website, that bit at least is interesting:

I know Josh Mandel mostly from Freddy Pharkas and SQ6 (and the, never happened SQ7). He's an incredibly funny guy.

Leslie Balfour was also involved with SQ6 and SQ7 I believe (she even at some point was named "The Gal from Andromeda" ). She's probably done more that I don't know of.

The last video pretty much addressed my worries. My biggest worry now is that Codemasters screws them over after the first game if it ends up being a success ("We'll take over from here on guys!"), but this one at least should be good fun.

I think at this point I would be mostly interested in them going into more depth about how exactly they plan to handle the remake. Will it be a complete remake with expanded scope or will it be a straight remake.

This abuse of the kickstarter platform is going to ruin it for people that legitimately can use it to bring us good games.

I don't know, the whole point of KS is the democracy angle...if you don't think LSL should be funded, you don't fund it. Pretty simple. I'm not funding it. I funded WL2, and I'll fund Shadowrun, but LSL? Nah. I had some fun back in the day with it, but we don't need a new one, IMO. This way, projects we want funded can be funded, and projects we don't want aren't funded. It's another way of finding out if the niche of gamers really is clamoring for that new game or not. Are gamers clamoring for a classic Adventure game? Yes, DF proved that. Old school turn based RPG? Yes, inXile proved that. classic Adventure game in the LSL series? ehh...maybe not so much. People will fund what they believe in, and I don't think it'll stop the use of KS as a platform if some projects don't meet their targets.

Will this game be sold as a retail copy as well? I see that if you give $100, you will get a retail copy, but will it be sold seperately too? And what happens if it doesnt reach $500k?

There will probably not be a retail copy, since they'd need a publisher's help for that.

If it doesn't reach 500k, the game doesn't get made. Simple as that.

I thought this was for a completely new iteration, not that Flash-looking, fan-made-reeking remake that was sort-of announced ages ago.

Why the hell would they need 500k for this? Especially when compared to the Jane Jensen game?

Why don't you head to the Kickstarter page and find out? Al himself addresses this...

I'm not criticising the game itself, but I think some of the lower kickstarter tiers are a bit expensive for what they include.

The $50 one for example - $25 just for a PDF of an art book?

$75 minimum for beta testing? A bit much, really. They should probably have given beta testing to backers paying $15+ as it is to thank them for funding their game, and then focussed on other rewards for the higher tiers.

They do give away physical copies if you donate $100 or more, so it seems that they are able to produce retail copies (unless it is some homemade stuff on a burned CD).

Ok, i see. It still a long way from 500k, so i dont think i will be donating before it gets close to that amount.

Well, yeah, but if they were to actually have these be on the shelves of retailers, they'd have to produce a lot more copies (with no promise that they could sell all of them) and get the copies to actual retailers in at least Europe & North America. I don't know if they have the logistics for that (maybe they do, maybe they don't).

For the leap to conclusions crowd, when asked about QfG and the Coles:

I actually worked with Lori on Dragon Fire, so I'm a big fan of hers too!! Right now, her husband, Corey, is working for Adventure Mob...the studio that's helping us with the re-make!

Not interested in Larry, but I'd definitely fund a new Quest for Glory with Coles. Just ditch that horrible art the last one had and go for the pretty paintings of the first ones.

this show is not Breaking Bad why is it not Breaking Bad? it should be Breaking Bad dammit Breaking Bad
Is this like a porno game sim? I've had the chance to see these types of games in the bargain bin, but the mister bean character getting laid is really...

You guys should try the old KANON dating sim for PC.

Not really, it's an adventure game series like other Sierra games.

The two most recent LSL games don't count though. They are just bad.

Sounds interesting, might play one after exams, see how Larry Laffer gets rejected.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
Just hit 400k. Only 100k left with 13 days to go, to meet it's funding goal.

Yeah, things are looking good for both this and Jane Jensen's project.
If you have a big name with a reputation behind it, you have a very good chance of raising the funds, however if you don't... this happens.

I think it's unfair to say that you need a big name for it to work, since Kickstarter worked well enough before DFA, and if the project has appeal, it won't need a big name behind it.

Oh, I agree. But that's when, from what I've seen, you have a proof of concept or something finished to show people. IE, the e-paper watches. OR, it's a smaller scale project, not requiring 10k+ dollars.

But, with funding a game you are in some ways gambling on the final product quality, when you have someone with reputation behind it, it's a far easier decision.

I don't think it's just the big name, although that no doubt helps. David Marsh never had his names on the cover of his games, otherwise it would be just as big as the Sierra and Lucasarts names, but the problem is , much like some of the other struggling game Kickstarters that popped up recently (cough...monkeypaw) that it's audience is a niche within a niche that just isn't that hungry. While the market for adventure games is small enough that the major publishers are afraid to touch them, it's still strong and desperate for interesting new games.

FMV adventure games like Sherlock Holmes are the unloved bastard child locked in the attic of the genre and, despite my personal high regard for that particular series, not something that many people are going to get excited about (much like the hardcore classic WRPG inspired JRPG dungeon crawler, a niche within a genre which certainly has more fans than the FMV game and is definitely not badmouthed as much, but which is being served already by the excellent Etrian Odyssey games).

Al Lowe, Tim Schafer, and Jane Jensen bring some serious ethos to a project with their names, but the Shadowgate name, and to a lesser extent his Deja-Vu, carry quite a bit of clout with older gamers as well.

The smart choice would have been to start with a Kickstarter for his new Shadowgate, as that would have excited more people, tickling the fancy of younger players who never played the original but have heard whispers of the legendary name, and exciting older, wealthier fans of the classic.
