Leisure Suit Larry Kickstarter by Replay Games [Ended, $673K funded]

basically this is selling the game. I don't even think he should do tiers. Just $15 for the game.

defo money grab. I'm not going to back this.

$15 for a remake? Sold.

Might even go in for the $115 CE as that artbook sounds mighty tempting. Also I would love to see the old team get the chance to make a new LSL so very happy to give them my money rather than $15 on XBLA/PSN where a fraction of it goes to the developers, people seem to forget that.

Yeah, I'm thinking of going for the $100 option. I'd love to do the $500 pledge so I can get a nice hard cover art book signed by Al Lowe to go with the Double Fine Adventure art book signed by Tim. :-D

Is there anywhere info available how many pages the artbook has? I would really love to get my hands on that one. But I want to make sure it's a real big book with many pages.

I don't know if this was there before, I didn't see it, but they address the "Previously announced thing" in the FAQ:
This must be the #1 question asked all over the internet today! We announced in October that we secured the development and publishing rights to the original Leisure Suit Larry franchise (series) of games. We showed a 1-room "proof of concept" that helped us secure the rights, so we showed those images in our press release at the time. We originally planned on getting VC (venture capital) funding so we can re-make the entire franchise from scratch for all the new platforms with the best graphics style, voice overs, orchestrated sound, etc. The response we received shocked us. This is what they literally told us "we like your company but we want nothing to do with Leisure Suit Larry since it will tarnish our good name". So it took us a few months to re-think our strategy and when we went to DICE to do the interview with Spike TV, we saw what amazing success our friends at Double Fine had and Tim convinced us to do the same.

Also this:
How come it's costing you $500,000 to do a re-make of Leisure Suit Larry and it only cost Double Fine $400,000 for a brand new game?

This was another really popular question today. I (Paul) just got off the phone with Greg, the producer over at Double Fine and asked him how it was possible to make a full fledged adventure game for $400k when it's costing us $500k to re-make Leisure Suit Larry. He told me that they initially only planned on making a small iOS game with 3 people on the entire team: 1 artist, 1 programmer, and 1 producer. That, plus they already had a game engine they spent millions of dollars making for a previous game whereas we're using the Unity engine and we're starting with the PC English version, which is a huge, huge difference!! The only thing we can re-use is the original design. Everything else we need to create from scratch: characters, environments, animations, engineering, and even sound effects.
Not quite sure how that sits with me. I'm pretty sure DF announced their adventure for PC to begin with.

If it was a new Larry game, I would back it, but the original is easily obtainable nowadays and for a few bucks too. The VGA version looks pretty decent, so why would I want another remake of that game exactly?

Well, people bought the Monkey Island remakes although the original games still look good or even better, so there is that.

Never been a fan of the Larry games despite being an adventure game fan as a child / teenager, so not sure if I will pledge any money. Don't really see what the problem is though. How much money they want should be up to the developers (it doesn't really matter anyway unless they don't reach their goal) and that they didn't find investors sounds believable to me.

As for the comparison with Double Fine, 400.000$ (minus Kickstarter's money, minus the documentary) always seemed incredibly low and a bit unrealistic. They probably only set that amount as their goal because they were the first to try it.

So who now owns the LSL IP? After all I don't want to spend money on a remake-remake to be a sales guinea pig and in the end Codemasters can cash in on that game and even decide to release the old games as remakes aswell. If Codemasters has really so much saying in this why don't they pay their share?

This part seems to be a wash, since I believe DFA was originally going to be a small iOS game which explains this small part in the original DFA pitch: "Over a six-to-eight month period, a small team under Tim Schafer's supervision will develop Double Fine's next game, a classic point-and-click adventure utilizing modern touch technology. Where it goes from there will unfold in real time for all the backers to see."

Of course, I think better heads prevailed when this got pushed into KS and the reward tiers started with the PC/Steam version. Folk were confused in the DFA thread on what 'modern touch technology' was, but it'd be easier explained if it were 'aimed for iOS'.

What's the point of having the "original creative team" when the person who REALLY created it was Charles Benton, sole creator of Soft Porn Adventure, the text adventure that had graphics added to it to turn it into Liesure Suit Larry? Unless I missed something and he's on the team?

Looks like I'll hit 100k in one full day. The Kickstarter started around 9:30 a.m Pacific Time right? Only less than 9k to go.

Wow, I missed that. I guess I was being paranoid.

Definitely keen for this, I've never played a LSL game as the ones I grew up with were shit, but the old ones sound like they are actually quality.

For me the best Larry's in order:
Larry 2,
Larry 7,
Larry 1,
Larry 3,
Larry 5,
Larry 6

Two is your favorite? Really? I like the setup for the game, but there's so many ways to get irreversibly stuck and have to start over. It's a really unfairly and badly designed adventure game.

Where do all these people come from, just throwing their money at everything?

I guess, actually giving a copy of the game to pledges helps out. It's like guaranteed money for devs.

Finding a pirated copy in my dad's sock drawer when I was 8, loading it up on the family Amstrad and hearing that glorious theme was a moment I'll never forget. Nor will the memory of not being able to answer any of the goddamn questions to prove I was an adult and being told to bugger off before dumping back to DOS. But when a friend's older brother revealed the secret of Alt+X......

Have $100 Al Lowe, for the bootleg version of LSL1 I played extremely underaged for hours back in the day and quite possibly warping me in the process.

I regret nothing.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
For me the best Larry's in order:
Larry 2,
Larry 7,
Larry 1,
Larry 3,
Larry 5,
Larry 6

Mine is...
6 (first one I played)
7
3
1
2 (annoying permastucks)
5

I don't remember getting stucked on 2, but for me it had the best setting together with 7, and the most difficult together with Larry 3. I don´t know why, but i didn't liked Larry 6. Maybe its was too easy and ugly for the time.

I can understand the $15 pledges which are basically just preorders, but I really have to wonder about the $1000 pledges. Are these superfans or just wealthy people without anything else to do with their money?

There's a guy in a batman suit giving children trinkets all year long, I'm sure it's not hard to scrounge up a measly $1k if you have the means.

Not sure if I'm going to pledge to a remake. A new game would have gotten some money from me.

The Leisure Suit Larry concept has aged about as well as Duke Nukem has.

Not sure I want to see this happen. :lol
Duke 3d shits on pretty much all modern fps games.

I love the game but I would pledge more if you guys made a brand new Leisure Suit Larry game instead of a re-make of LSL 1
We would LOVE to make a new version of Leisure Suit Larry!! We thought about making LSL 4 (the missing floppies) or 8, or even 69!! The problem is, Codemasters, the publisher that owns the rights to Leisure Suit Larry and sold them to us wants to see what we can do with the game first. They said if we do a good job at a re-make then we'll have total freedom to do what we want on the next game. So, we have to really kick major ass on this game and show Codemasters what we're capable of. Once we do that, and the game is a success, then we can talk about a new design for our good friend Larry. Trust us, nobody wants to see a newer version of Leisure Suit Larry than us, his biggest fans (yes, we too are fans of Larry Laffer).
This makes it sound like they don't completely own the rights to LSL.

Loved the old LSL games.. remember my cousins sneakily playing it when their Dad was at work and us trying to work out how to get around the age rating questions, but not sure if I'm behind this. The 1991(?) remake still holds up, and if the full 2012 remake is anything like the video they showed it looks like a rather crappy flash game due to the art and animation style. Maybe I will back it, just to get LSL8 but I don't even feel like I would be getting a discount on $15 because surely the full game will be $14.99 or less.
