Let's Talk About PlayStation VR: List of Upcoming Titles

Ok I tryed the PSVR myself yesterday, here my considerations.

It's my first VR experience.

The PSVR is incredibly comfortable. I played in the "panic room" Rush of Blood and I liked it a lot, the game is fun and well made, the graphic it's ok and the sensation of movement on the rails its incredible! (I had a sensation of dizziness when it started! Lot of fun tough!) And the fact that you can see your arms and legs (virtual arms and legs) make it more realistic.
The I played the VR World Ocean Descent… here zero interaction, the graphic had a lot of aliasing and overall was not so interesting. Third game Driveclub VR and here it was the worse. Before starting the staff told me that the game usually is the one that causes most problem to people that play it so to tell them if I needed to stop it. And in the second lap I had this sensation of nausea (sickness), but I stayed strong to finish the demo… the graphic was so and so, the game was playable with a steering wheel and pedals so it was fun to play, but I personally didn’t like it so much. Then last game Battlezone. Here this game graphic it’s pretty stylized, still I liked it a lot, and the gameplay was the fastest of all the demoes, with a lot of movement in all the directions, but I never had a problem playing it, so I guess it was Driveclub VR the problem somehow…

So I never expected to say that, but the best games I played were Rush of Blood and Battlezone… And I have to say that in particular Rush of Blood is the most funny and immersive, and where the sense of scale is the most impressive and “realistic”.
To me the PSVR is sold.

And for my opinion, the MOVE controller is very important for the experience and I hope most of the game will support it where it makes sense (in Battlezone it was ok to play with the controller).

Also I think the games for PSVR must be made with this new technology in mind and not just try to take games and make them the same way for the PSVR.
Oh and probably Horror will be one of the best genre for this! :D

They said they doubled the resolution in Farpoint, not the poly count. Since the headset can't magically display more pixels with the Pro, that should mean it gets supersampling, which will greatly improve image quality. Also they talked about rendering more details on background and models as well.

Farpoint should serve as great example of both what PS VR can do in general and what the Pro can give you on top of that. It will still be fine on a regular PS4, I'm sure.

But since it was the only title mentioned, I think there is some truth about that disassociate PS VR and PS4 Pro theory. They needed to say it will make it better, but they didn't want to stress it to a point where people think it will be almost mandatory. So they kept it short.

They actually talked about doubling pixel count (and thus, fidelity) not polygon count, though technically I suppose developers could use that power as they see fit. They also mentioned higher framerates, though I'm not sure if that necessarily does VR games much good as the majority target 60 anyway. Denser pixel counts would seem to be the best use of the added horsepower.

Thanks both of you. Guess I wasn't paying enough attention.

I need to get an extra Move controller before the VR launches. Do you think there will be a sale on the controllers, or should I get one now before it becomes scarce?

I got one from my local walmart for $12.50, it was in the clearance bin. Don't know if it was my area only.

Couple more questions:

1. What's a good charging dock for Move controllers? I'm seeing lots of really cheap stands (including ones on eBay that only say "ship from China). As long as it works I'm fine with it, but will still take recommendations.

2. Will the navigation controller ever get used, or should I just sell that on eBay to cover the cost of a second Move controller (which I just ordered)?

3. Is Playstaiton Worlds only included with the launch bundle? Didn't they say something like all of the demos in Worlds would be free to download?

4. What VR games are looking the most promising? Until Dawn is the one I'd be most interested in since it's horror, but the fact that it's on rails and the cheap price tells me it might just be an hour or something at the most (which they pretty much confirmed for Batman).

So, we're about three weeks from launch day and I can't find a listing to pre-order the Aim controller at any NA retailer.

Is this thing gonna make it?

I'm thinking the aim controller will likely be launching close to Farpoint, which isn't a launch title.

Someone compared PSVR to the same quality as Google cardboard. I hope this is not true. I tried some games on it and don't really feel like I'm there (in the game) at all. Can someone who's tried both chime in?

2: No games seem to use the Navigation controller. Most Move games seem to use 2 Motion controllers, so get that.

3: VR Worlds is a full game that is available in the Launch Bundle or as a standalone physical/digital release. It's isn't free. However, every PS VR headset includes a free demo disc that will also be available digitally.

1) I picked up an official one for cheap a few months ago (UK). Runs off the mains, so no hogging USB sockets, and is compatible with Move and/or Nav controllers.

Sony PlayStation 3 Move Charging Station (PS3) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004477IZA/

2) I don't know of any games that use it currently. It's is compatible, but who knows if a dev will make use of it.

3) Just the bundle gets VR Worlds. All PSVR packs gets a demo disc which contains a sample of VR Worlds (taken from Ocean Descent)

4) I can vouch for Battlezone and Farpoint, looking forwards to playing RIGS

This is an official Sony branded charging station that also can act as chargers for your ps4 controllers via an adapter. $12

Nothing seems to use it but I would hold on to it just in case, if I was in your position.
3. Is Playstaiton Worlds only included with the launch bundle? Didn't they say something like all of the demos in Worlds would be free to download?
There is a demo disc included with every headset (which has some demo versions of the stuff in Worlds). And yeah, demos will be put up on the PS Store as well. Also, PS Worlds isn't a collection of demos.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I5S8V9A/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Rigs, Driveclub VR, Battlezone, Farpoint seem to consistently get good impressions from people.

Sony once said that the Navigation controller is compatible. But they encourage developers to not use it, because it has no tracking ability like the move controller. Therefore it would be a much worse experience for the user.

In short, if you really, really want to be sure you can keep them. But I think you can sell them.

Did anyone here play Resident Evil 7 at EGX?
VR is the only reason I'm getting it but from what I've heard its the worst looking game in VR
Although Batman looks amazing.
What kinda difference is there between normal and VR visually?

Edit: I'm getting a PS4PRO, will that make a difference in VR too?

I have the move controller gun that uses the nav controller, I think it was for socom 4 or something(sharp shooter). Have they said if that gun will work for farpoint?

I haven't played RE7 in VR, but from impressions, it seems like it is definitely not running at the full resolution of the headset.

The Pro can definitely help with VR games, how many developers choose to use it to the fullest, we don't know yet, Sony might be purposely not saying much about improvements from Pro in PSVR because they want the PSVR to sell to people who have regular PS4 as well.

We already do know officially that for Farpoint, the Pro "doubles the number of rendered pixels"

Now while we don't know what res it is running at on the PS4 to begin with, for reference, 1080p has 2.25 times the number of pixels that 720p has. So if it was running anywhere near 720p on standard, it could be running at or close to 1080p on the Pro.

I'm pretty sure the navigation controller is still going to be used based on the pictures of the "PS VR Aim Controller"

No. I think it's been confirmed that the old Sharpshooter attachment won't work with Farpoint.

The big difference between that and the PSVR Aim Controller is that the Aim is standalone (doesn't need moves plugged into it) and it has two analogue sticks instead of the Sharpshooter's one.

If horror is your thing check out Here They Lie. It's a full game, available at launch, with a demo included on the US demo disc (but not on the EU disc, boo).

There's a teaser trailer and a PS Access video on YouTube.

There's also a few more. Like Paranormal Activity (which looks better than the movies, yes I forced myself to watch those in case they were relevant to the game...) and Weeping Doll.

Speaking of which Oasis Games confirmed that both Weeping Doll and Pixel Gear will launch in October along with launch title Ace Banana.

Now we have 4 Horror titles for October

I can't stress how horror is the single most important genre for me regarding VR.

I finished Five Nights at Freddie's the other day and thought that game would also be really great in VR.

And there's a mode to let you play non-VR games too right? Can PT work effectively with this?

Pretty much, any game works in cinematic mode,

Shuhei Yoshida played PS2 game Siren in PSVR.

Any word what controller options can be used? I assume no head tracking of course....unless there is?

It shouldn't be a problem for most FPS games to simulate faux-VR nicely. Anything else, no idea.

I never heard anything about this being launch. I think they only have prototype of the peripheral shown.

You just play it with the Dualshock 4 and the game is on a big flat screen in front of you.

It won't. Although early demos did use the Sharpshooter, the only choices now are the VR Aim Controller or Dualshock 4 (I believe the Aim may have updated motion tech?)

Doubled the amount of rendered pixels to be exact.

And that doesn't automatically mean supersampling either. It could be that the game on the ps4 wasn't actually being rendered at the full resolution the headset is capable of. And I do think that may be the case with most PSVR games that aren't simplistic in graphics.

Using the pro, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a jump in clarity similar to going from 720p to 1080p (1080p has 2.25 times the number of pixels than 720p)

Of course, yeah, if there are games running at 1080p on the standard ps4 already, those could get supersampling benefits.
Doubling the number of pixels may also refer to going from screen-native to the "standard" VR superscaling factor of 1.4x, which renders 96% more pixels. So, 1080p -> 1512p.

If a remember correctly if you choose the largest screen option there is partial head tracking to look at the sides of the theater sized screen in front of you. If you choose medium or small screen it feels like you have a big screen in front of you with no head tracking.

Normal controls btw

The interesting thing about 2nd analog stick is that it has the symbols. I have no idea how its being used in the games but when I see this thing it looks like they just re-purposed the Sharpshooter. The navigation controller still works on the PS4 just like it does on the PS3 as well as the Sharpshooter I might add. It's only because it connects to the Move through USB so it can re-arranges the buttons to the right areas. So yes that Socom controller thing does work on the PS4 but is it compatibility really depends on the game. I suspect an on-rails shooter would work fine.

Almost, the medium sized virtual screen also does not stick to your view. I read it should fill your view if you center it, while the larger one requires head movement to keep track of everything. Only the smallest viewport will be "glued to your face". Maybe nice to try out laying down for some relaxed gaming? :)

Does anybody know if the Amazon PSVR bundle with the two move controllers + the camera will include the new camera or the older version? I'm assuming it's the older one, but I was just curious.

Ive played most all the PSVR games(No Robinson or Golem off the top of my head), and the one that I really want to play more of, and keeps me intrigued, is the last one I just played. Which was Thumper. Very cool and intense. Dying to play more. Though it can be played on a regular TV( haven't done that though)

Making a prediction based on supremely limited data: PlayStation VR will be delayed.

There's just not much hype coming from the Sony marketing machine. One of Sony's greatest competitive advantages is how great they are at marketing, and the fact that we are less than a month out with little enthusiasm and persistent supply issues seems pretty telling.

Went to two GameStops in the Bay Area listed on the demo site. Neither actually had it and both said they won't make the October 1st date listed.

Edit: Went to one GameStop, called the other.

Edit 2: Best Buy has it though, hrm... Apparently there's an actual person that goes to conduct the demos at different times? Was expecting more like the Vive/Microsoft experience where the demo is always there.

Marketing should start this week. Don't expect to much though. VR is something that needs to be tried not seen on commercial. Their Demo Stations should do the trick, they run until December so they have marketing in the bag. Also PSVR is supply constraint at the moment no need to push marketing that hard if you cant sell anymore until November.

Good points. You might be right. I'm just surprised how little there is, but I suppose it's pretty pointless to try to market/advertise an experiential device that might be sold out anyway.

Yeah. Amazon UK have said it will take until Dec 12 to fulfill all the pre orders they have.

My local GAME store tell me they are initially receiving enough stock to fulfill day one pre-orders, but there is none spare for walk-in customers.

Not likely. We're 16 days from launch. This isn't Sony's first rodeo, they know they're launching a niche product that needs word of mouth more than a big splash in media ads. Honestly, the demo disc is going to do more to promote PSVR than any expensive marketing campaign could.

Sony themselves have said this, thats why they wanted demos in as many stores as possible and hopefully a good amount of units at retail so first adopters can show it off to friends and family. It is strange that your site cancelled their demos but I suppose there could be other reasons for that, like technical ones.

They are already doing the Taco Bell PSVR promo marketing. Even seen the commercial on TV a few times. And more commercials/marketing is coming.

i think this is unlikely, or at least ambitious. in my experience PSVR has the clearest image quality of any headset when running at 1080p, but the problems come when games are rendered at what's clearly sub-native res - farpoint was an example of that when i played it. just getting everything up to that standard would be a good first step.

I don't think Paranormal Activity has a release date. They have barely show any new trailer, so I suggest not to hold any breath (no pun intended) for it in the near future either.

Also Sony Japan studio talks about making Playroom VR.
