It must be an extension of human intelligence, but it is really odd how that would be recruited in so many different ways by sex drive. I guess we do form pretty complex psychological associations and relationships with our sexual drive even when we're really 'normal' or vanilla about it, maybe it's just the 'deviations' stand out by contrast compared to all the standard stuff we take for granted which are kind of invisible to us. But it's interesting to compare it to other drives. I mean, people develop different palates as far as gustatory sensation is concerned, but that's kind of isolated to taste, it doesn't really get as weird and psychological. Well I guess some people are cannibals and there's a weird psychological component to that, but there's usually a sexual component to it as well so maybe that's to blame!
I think breath play and like a bazillion other weird irrational things are somewhat hot, and I have no idea why. I think it becoming a fetish or crutch could be pretty sexually or personally debilitating, but just playing around with novelty is probably a healthy level to be at, at least I hope so as that's how I identify with my sexual quirks.

I used to think so, but some people like that. For me it started as a "no, never" in the hypothetical scenario where I was asked, then I thought about it and if you were well read and safe about it it would be way safer than say, autoerotic asphyxiation. Then I thought about it some more and I started to find it kind of hot, in a way it's kind of like a trust exercise. It is weird though, something intellectually tells me that taking unnecessary risks maybe should set off warning bells, but I don't know. Apparently asphyxiation in the form of choking is really dangerous because the vagus nerve running down the neck can get pinched or something and stop the heart in a way that's really difficult to resuscitate immediately without warning. So now I'm mentally noting that as a hard "no".
Oh yeah, it's incredibly dangerous. You can find many famous cases of people who have died doing it. If someone was really gung-ho about trying it, I wouldn't recommend doing it on your own. Make sure you have some supervision or something.

There are ways to restrict or play with breathing that's relatively safe but apparently it's best to just stay away from the neck region entirely for that purpose. I think a really light pressure on the neck that doesn't really restrict breathing or put pressure on any of the stuff in our neck but just provides some tactile and psychological stimuli is probably fine.
I know little about the practice so I can't really comment on it one way or the other. I would think anyone interested in doing it would have the common sense to realize how dangerous it is and do the proper research before exploring it.
As for the vagus nerve, I don't know much about resuscitation. I'd imagine for an auto-erotic asphyxiation case it would be the same as anyone who has been strangulated. From my understanding, most CPR first aid is for obstructed airways which would make sense that the 'common' methods wouldn't work/be as effective. So... yeah.
