Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

What I don't like about this FF, and other Toriyama/Nomura FF's, is the pretentious banter. They don't talk, rather they act like philosophers. And it goes on and on.

This is why I personally prefer XII. That didn't have too many long cutscenes, and they didn't ramble about the afterlife for hours. Vaan in fact, why I think he's so underrated is that he actually drops his cliche I wanna be a space pirate schtick, rather early in the game too. He admits it was bullshit. This is why i'm looking forward to XVI, which should be more in line with the Ivalice games.

How does the dog look in 4K?

Show Claire some respect. You exist on this planet only because of her actions.

Awful lol. I happened to complete that quest yesterday.

I gave XIII (part 1) a chance on PS3 back in the day, played it for about 15 hours before I got bored and gave up.

If I didn't enjoy that one, are the sequels still worth checking out? I sometimes see them up for sale on Steam, but I'm not sure if it's worth my time.

I quit after 20 hours (ff13). My take :

1: I still dont know how the combat work after 20 hours . I just press some random button and win fight .
2: No idea which ability/skill is better because damage numbers pop all over the place, too many too fast I cant count for shit . The most useless damage numbers display ever .
3:The minimap make me feel like I'm running from this hallway to another hallway . Gave me a bit of claustrophobia . You know the feeling of being in a dungeon in Skyrim for too long , and the moment of relief after seeing the sky again ? This game doesnt have that . Just dungeon 24/7 .

I have not played this because 13-2 was such a pile of cringe shit. Lightning is one of the worst protagonist in the series. She was created with a marketing board to appeal to coomers that like women that need to eat a sandwich.

The only decent thing from the XIII series is the battle system and the godlike soundtrack of the original FF13. Too bad the pacing in the original treated you like a child that fits squares into triangles.

It surprises me to read there are fans of Lighting Returns. Maybe I should give it a shot.
I wonder what's your definition of cringe and shit. 13-2 aint any of that.

The combat is actually really rewarding imo. Its the best part of that game.

The proper way to play it, is to see the enemies weakness. Which is indicated by yellow numbers, and Libra also progressively shows more. The AI will adapt to Libra information, and cast the correct spells. I believe it will also buff you with the correct enhancements (Enfire against frost enemies etc).

Generally, you want to stagger the enemy by pelting it in Ravager mode, and once its staggered you want to switch to at least one commando to finish them off. You have the choice to increase stagger damage by more magic, or just take the current bonus and go commando on them. What you decide to do depends on how long the enemy stays in staggered state, some stagger briefly and others for eternity. Keeping enemies into the air by delayed attack commands is helpful too, since they can't do shit when launched.

Buffs and debuffs work on pretty much everything too, so starting with a Saboteur/Synergist deck can trivialize a lot of fights. This also goes for LR, the likes of Deprotect, imperil etc work out great.

FFXIII, later on against the hardest enemies, is actually about timing and muscle memory. You want split second switches to Defender roles to eat the damage but minimize the downtime. So I used to set paradigms in a set pattern so I knew what would come up next.

Yeah this game is fun. I don't hate it at all. There isn't too much story, mostly before and after a new main mission, which is good. Somehow I can't help to think this game is inspired by NieR. Its world is about the same size (and its actually connected, you can open up the highways later on), and its mostly about helping out locals. Not to mention the music in some areas sounds awfully similar. Its also melancholic, those people are dying within like weeks, and they just try to live their life the best until they get wiped out. But there isn't as much grinding involved. Most times I held the items already, or it was a small detour to get it. If you just fight you will likely have enough spoils for the chocolina board later in the game as well. They could've sped up the chocobo though, its slow as fuck (obviously for clock reasons).

What I like is that you can actually exterminate every last monster. At some point an elite version spawns, which means you've rooted this type of enemy. They drop some good stuff and that enemy type is gone forever. There are some neat things in here.

Time, which is daunting at first, is working against me now. I've completed all main scenarios, and about 45 sidequests, and I have 6 days to go (which is the same amount you get when starting the game lol). So I can mop up remaining quests, fight some enemies (exterminate them perhaps), grind their drops or just fast forward at the inn. There is barely anything to do for me until the endgame now. And its not like I abused chronostasis either, I used it, but not at every corner.

Even though its obviously on a budget (looks like its even lower than 2, which already felt lower budget) this might be my favourite FFXIII game. Its rather unique unlike the other 2 and its also more challenging (when starting on Normal). There isn't any kick ass CGI here, but the in-game models actually look really good in this enhanced game.

I played all 3 games recently on Game Pass as well and didn’t like any of them. The storytelling was awful, the game design wasn’t good, the music was mediocre at best bafflingly bad at worst, the characters weren’t particularly good, the enemy design was beyond lame, the battle systems were tedious and often dragged on too long because of the bad implementation of the Stagger mechanic, the Crystarium was time wasting baloney. There were the occasional parts I liked but there was just about always a part i hated right around the corner. The games felt like a chore to get through.
Just bad games and best left in the past as they mostly are. I’m glad Square Enix got away from the BS game design of the 10 and especially the 13 games.

Sounds like you had a good time overall, then?
