Speaking as someone who's attempted suicide, I'm shocked, but not surprised. You don't write lyrics like what their songs featured and come from a very happy place. And despite fame, fortune, family, success, those feelings really never leave you. I'm reminded of Robin Williams' suicide when I read this.
People don't realize that depression is often a symptom of deeper emotional trauma; it's an emotional as well as a mental illness that is all-consuming and is always lurking in the shadows. And once you're in that club, you're in for life. People don't get cured of depression, they go into remission. Some days are better than others, but it's an ongoing day-to-day war. And sometimes, all the support in the world can't overcome that.
Depression is like looking at everyone through the wrong end of a telescope; the world seems so much farther away than it really is, making you feel like you're on a ship at sea -- isolated and alone.
Fuck, what do you even say to this? It's absolutely heartwrenching to see something like this happen. I hope his surviving family won't be too messed up by this...
To anyone reading this, talk to people around you whom you feel may be suffering. Be emotionally open and invite those around you to do the same. Know that they won't just open up and cheer up, but be patient and listen to what little they may say. Be present, and be compassionate. Encourage them to seek therapy and/or medication. There are solutions. Let them know that nobody is ever alone, no matter how far away the world seems. Let them know that you're always close, and encourage them to put that telescope down and try to see their lives as they really are.
I didn't expect to write all that. This hit me in a way I wasn't expecting it to. Rest in peace, Mr. Bennington.
