Linus tech tips is disappointed that the steam machine won't be priced like a console.

I trust you that that's what the parts he picked out cost. I don't trust that that's equivalent or could not be done cheaper, nawmean?

Grok (who has very recently blatantly and obviously lied to me so get your salt grains ready), says it could make an equivalent PC for $720:
Sample PCPartPicker Build (~$720 total, 512GB; expandable/upgradable)

PartModel/ExamplePrice (USD)
CPUAMD Ryzen 5 7600 (6C/12T, 5.1GHz boost)$190
GPUAMD Radeon RX 7600 8GB$260
RAM16GB (2x8GB) DDR5-6000$70
Storage512GB NVMe SSD (e.g., WD SN580)$40
MotherboardMini-ITX AM5 (e.g., MSI B650I)$180
PSU450–550W SFX 80+ Gold$70
CaseMini-ITX (e.g., Fractal Ridge, ~6" cube-like)$90
CoolerStock/stock air (or $30 add-on)$20
Total~$720 (pre-tax/shipping; sales drop to ~$650)

Price looks about right for off the shelf. Of course, the CPU is the mobile version of that and it and the gpu will be integrated into the motherboard so that part alone will be cheaper than the cpu/gpu/mb combo there. But if Valve says the price will be competitive with what you could build yourself then it will be overpriced, imo. Gotta stick to my guns and say $500 or bust on this one.

Btw, I'm on team $600 … if it's more than that, it's all Topher Topher fault.
It'll be 700 of you want the 2TH version which is basically required if it's going to be your main thing as games takes up a lot of space now. Unless you're dead set on just playing a few games on it.

Another thing I'm wondering is how well would the cooling be cause it's a really small pc so unless they got some special advance cooling than trying to play for a few hours might not be good especially on a warm day. Have heard horror stories about small form pcs over a decade ago.

Also fan noise. If they somehow got some good optimization and gear magic within that box to make the heat and noise decent than that would be a huge plus.

All the experts in here thinking they know better than Valve how much their hardware should cost

Damn, if only Valve had known they could've just asked GAF.

I already have a WD 2TB SN850x NVMe drive that I'll be removing from my PS5 Pro so the 512GB Steam Machine option will suit me fine.
