Linus tech tips is disappointed that the steam machine won't be priced like a console.

I trust you that that's what the parts he picked out cost. I don't trust that that's equivalent or could not be done cheaper, nawmean?

Grok (who has very recently blatantly and obviously lied to me so get your salt grains ready), says it could make an equivalent PC for $720:
Sample PCPartPicker Build (~$720 total, 512GB; expandable/upgradable)

PartModel/ExamplePrice (USD)
CPUAMD Ryzen 5 7600 (6C/12T, 5.1GHz boost)$190
GPUAMD Radeon RX 7600 8GB$260
RAM16GB (2x8GB) DDR5-6000$70
Storage512GB NVMe SSD (e.g., WD SN580)$40
MotherboardMini-ITX AM5 (e.g., MSI B650I)$180
PSU450–550W SFX 80+ Gold$70
CaseMini-ITX (e.g., Fractal Ridge, ~6" cube-like)$90
CoolerStock/stock air (or $30 add-on)$20
Total~$720 (pre-tax/shipping; sales drop to ~$650)

Price looks about right for off the shelf. Of course, the CPU is the mobile version of that and it and the gpu will be integrated into the motherboard so that part alone will be cheaper than the cpu/gpu/mb combo there. But if Valve says the price will be competitive with what you could build yourself then it will be overpriced, imo. Gotta stick to my guns and say $500 or bust on this one.

Btw, I'm on team $600 … if it's more than that, it's all Topher Topher fault.
It'll be 700 of you want the 2TH version which is basically required if it's going to be your main thing as games takes up a lot of space now. Unless you're dead set on just playing a few games on it.

Another thing I'm wondering is how well would the cooling be cause it's a really small pc so unless they got some special advance cooling than trying to play for a few hours might not be good especially on a warm day. Have heard horror stories about small form pcs over a decade ago.

Also fan noise. If they somehow got some good optimization and gear magic within that box to make the heat and noise decent than that would be a huge plus.

All the experts in here thinking they know better than Valve how much their hardware should cost

Damn, if only Valve had known they could've just asked GAF.

I already have a WD 2TB SN850x NVMe drive that I'll be removing from my PS5 Pro so the 512GB Steam Machine option will suit me fine.

yes with right part ofcourse.

some of example :

there is even smaller case than this

That would be a good option for people that want to build a pc themselves, I don't see a price though

The performance of that one isn't huge difference from Steam machine

It's showing cyberpunk at 1080p ultra and 60 fps while Steam machine did 1080p high at 60 or 1440p with upscale, so I would take the Steam machine still if it's a couple hundred less than that and don't have to bother building it myself

The system has an uphill battle in the first place.......... Never mind the extra issues it will have if it's too expensive.
It doesn't really matter how successful this is

Steam already has 150 million users, they don't need this machine, Steam did fine even if this never existed

So if they sell this machine for a profit it doesn't matter if only sell 10,000 or 5 million as long as they sell for profit they will make some money from it either way and it will be there for people that want it or for people that don't even have a gaming pc, and it will be a first step to getting steam OS to all desktops

Which is why I said the system, and never mentioned the Steam service. But thanks for pointing the obvious out.

Eh, companies aren't infallible and talking about this stuff is fun.
The experts at Valve also believed in the original Steam machines.
The experts at Nintendo thought the WiiU was a good idea
The experts at Sony were so blown away by Concord that they bought the developer before the game was even out.
The experts at Microsoft though pricing the Xbox 1 higher than the Ps4 and always bundling it with Kinect was a good idea.

They can't subsidize a Steam Machine like a typical console manufacturer, because a significant portion of their userbase already owns games on the platform. How many additional sales are going to be generated by Steam Machines? I see it, and likely Valve sees it as another place to play your existing Steam Library.

I'm not sure they will sell console numbers, I don't see a significant amount of additional game sales, and Valve also has to take into account uncertainties around inflation of PC components (this AI craze is only causing more issues), and they need to plan a price point in advance to maintain a price point now and into the future unless they want bad press for raising prices every few years for largely the same components.

It makes perfect sense why Valve has not announced a price but is warning us to expect it to be like a PC rather than console. As a consumer, I don't like this, but I understand why it is happening.
It seems that with so many issues, Valve shouldn't have bothered launching the Steam Machine at all!

And I was saying why it doesn't matter how successful the machine is, this is completely different from how consoles are done where it does matter how much they sale

Yep. Valve seems perfectly happy creating niche products like VR and handhelds so this fits with that characteristic. It was never meant to sell massive numbers like consoles.

"steam machine won't be priced like a console"

WTH that even means? two gens ago 600 was completely out of the question, 4 years into this gen and we're getting prices going up to 750, the Gabecube is an enthusiastic machine you can have in addition to your PCMR, not a device made to replace it, so there is no need to be the most powerful thing at release because logically it'd never be able to outmatch a PCMR

There are plenty of controllers out there priced higher. Steam Controller will be at least that imo.
Yeah the "Pro" and "Elite" controllers are higher priced, for sure. I don't see this lumped into those categories, though.

It's kind of it it's own category with the track pads. I know it's got TMR sticks and that Grip Sense stuff.

I guess we'll see relatively soon. I'll be surprised if it's over $90. But damn maybe it will be crazy expensive with these extra features.

I hope not. There's no way I'm spending more than $80-90 for it.

<sigh> Welp, I guess that might dash hopes for $499. I knew $399 was always out of the question. There's some slight hope the 512 GB model could hit $499 or $549, but I'd say ATM my gut's telling me that's less than 20% chance of happening.

Thanks Sam Altman. You fxxed over EVERYTHING. Hope your company implodes in a way no company or bank has collapsed in the 20th or 21st century. You deserve all the failures, my guy 👍

A true shame. The industry could really use a major shake up for the better, but maybe Valve don't feel like being that shake up, because it does require going big on scale and aggressive on price. They have all the other pieces in place.

Until a new major platform holder steps into the space we really can't expect any big shifts from Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft as things currently stand. They have no external pressure of a factor to do such. I guess ironically, the impending RAM shortage crisis generate by the godawful Sam Altman & OpenAI could create external factors to push one or more of the current platform holders to make some big changes, but I have my doubts.

it is custom build so how it cost depend on the users. the example is show is merely of how you can still build strong performance machine at small size. ofcourse, some of the case and parts can be bit expensive(depend on your country too) but it depend on the brand too. there is budget option available but ofcourse the best quality one usually more expensive than the rest.

i argue you can still got decent performance as long you choose right part.

this case for example is bigger than the other build i show previously but it is cheaper and more friendly toward certain ATX pc parts(PSU and coolers etc.).

but it still feels smaller than PS5.

Only the last of those is even a cost issue, so the only valid comparison here.

And even then:
People here are arguing a PC should be sold at subsidized console prices, as if it wasn't piss easy to just, you know, not use Steam on it and get out of the ecosystem. Hell, you aren't even locked into Valve's ecosystem by default, SteamOS does no such thing afaik.
It boggles the mind where that idea even enters people's thoughts.
Linus arguing the same is a dead giveaway, too. That guy has to be one of the most clueless individuals that ever (unfortunately) reached an audience, and he continues to spread his idiocy across the spheres, which is actively harmful.

If the Machine ends up costing around the same as what a comparable PC spec would be, it will be a price people are willing to pay.
And I do believe Valve is aware of that.

I also believe that Valve is aware of the fact that they did not build a high-end rig to run the latest titles at highest performance - but I'm certain they value the feedback

I just dont see how this would be more than $500 - so lets take this as an example: https://www.amazon.com/ACEMAGICIAN-S3A-Computers-Computer-Preinstalled/dp/B0FGV2LH49?th=1 $400 8 cores 16 threads, with a radeom 780m 12 cu gpu.

Ive seen it on temu and other chinese sellers for cheaper. This is more cpu more ram gpu is half the cus I think but around the same generation 780m 12 cus - I think the steam box has 24 cus, its very similar, this has a better cpu 8 cores 16 threads ie the die would not cost much more than this and they are only going for 16G ram and 8G video ram. I dont even understand why they aree not going with unified ram.

AMD on Linux has actually got good unified ram solutions the Ai Max 395+ chip is proof of this (8000 MT/s integrated ram up 128G) - this is an expensive chip when paired with 128G ram for example: https://www.amazon.com/GMKtec-ryzen_ai_mini_pc_evo_x2/dp/B0FLDJBS79?th=1 but this is 16 cores 32 thread and 40CUs gpu - which is way more powerful than the steam box.

The only reason they would be going with the cpu / gpu combo and the ram is to make it affordable its a relatively weak cpu, relatively weak gpu - low ram, there is nothing amazing about it. The hardware is low to mid tier, it should be priced at $400 to be quite frank - with volume discounts their own manufacturing etc they will be making some profit at $400 - its 1 apu, there are tonnes of mini pcs at around $400 which are about the same spec. After the announcement it was clear to me the spec was not much different to many of these mini pcs I see flooding the market. $500 I bet they would be making $100+ profit per unit.

If they price this above $500 I dont think I will bite I would rather make my own much more powerful living room steam machine and I can using one of these mini pcs as the base. They control the whole manufacturing and distribution pipeline, they dont pay anyone to resell it, they control the whole manufacturing pipeline and they buy in bulk. There is also R&D to factor in as well, but I mean that adds $5-$10 to each unit (if they manufacture a million units - if they manufacture and sell 10 million, then its more likely to cost them around $1 for the R&D).

I looked up this gpu it's not even close to the steam machine, more proof this isn't a 400-500 machine

I am hoping for 600 for the base model though

he Steam Machine runs on a custom AMD setup that's far beyond what's inside the Steam Deck. It features a 6-core Zen 4 CPU clocked up to 4.8 GHz, paired with a semi-custom RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units and 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM.
https://www.techpowerup.com/342635/...ax-388-8c-16t-and-full-40-cu-radeon-8060s-gpu this is a better gpu + cpu. it doesnt even match current stuff being released by amd apus.

This will cost valve probably around $380-400 to manufacture at $400 they would be selling it at profit, at $500 they would be making a decent profit. If they charge more than 500 its just pure greed.

I would love this to be a great success. I just hope Valve dont get too greedy.

As for Linus Tech Tips, the dude has absolutely rudementary knowledge about computing, he knows how to assemble a computer big woop, thats his claim to fame studied some bs like marketing and is a massive shill. Its all about his awfully overpriced terribly branded merch and making as much money from his viewers as possible, oops did he drop a gpu ? oh dear... To boot he is one of a handful of genuine Microsoft / Windows fanboys, he hides it well but its all about MS for him.

Strix halo is expensive, if a weaker pc than the steam machine is 400 then the more powerful steam machine can't be 400

Also have to factor packaging and shipping into the cost and some profit

What's your ceiling, BM
Like the most I would pay? Probably 700, I'm getting the frame too though so I'm hoping for a bundle that saves 100 or so

If the machine is 800 even with a bundle I'll just find a pc that's 1200 or so with a better gpu and put steam os on it

The frame is the main thing I want, I just have a 12 year old pc and need a new one of those too
