Game mostly using the same "trick" over and over - if there is a pit or water blocking your path, go to umbral where this route will become available to you.
And? Its an added feature on top of a pretty dense Souls' type world-map!
Between this and the Niohs for me.
Its definitely the best Souls' clone I've played, Nioh I've always felt was always its own thing being tonally and structurally completely different.
That being said, LOTF despite its similarities adds enough ideas on top to have it its own identity, even if its clearly trying for the exact same vibe as its inspiration.
Having put ~30 hours into the game I've generally been impressed. Visually its extremely strong, and on Pro it runs basically perfectly smooth. Combat is good, being much looser than Souls but somewhat faster paced. Nioh on the other hand has both the speed and way more technical depth and variety.
Voice acting and story didn't impress out of the gate, but I feel it improves significantly by mid-game. Some of the side NPC's are particularly good.
Main issues: Two big things.
First of all, even with the revamped tutorial onboarding is still extremely rough. They try and introduce way too much, too quickly which doesn't give the best impression. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the lamp system, but they really need to explain it more clearly. Also the rushed way they try and cover all the bases undersells the Umbral world gimmick. Which is a shame as its not only visually striking, but also has a lot of gameplay possibilities that you see somewhat explored later on.
The biggest issue with the combat, and general moment-to-moment gameplay is the way you can get snagged on terrain sometimes. It doesn't happen too often, and when it catches enemies it can actually be useful, but its happens frequently enough for it to prove irritating. Generally collision is fine, but its definitely something that needs to be ironed out going forwards.
There are other smaller issues, like for instance the temporary bonfire system isn't particularly well introduced so you need to have played for quite a few hours before you realize how liberally you can use the seeds, and I'm not madly keen on the way the game allows you to blunder into boss-fight lockins.
On the upside, there are some really good ideas sprinkled in too; I love the mimic implementation and the way loot drops are persistent so you don't need to worry about losing key rewards. The Umbral world switching when it shines is a great addition, I just wish there were more puzzles based on the mechanic.
My (unfinished) assessment is that its a very good. game Especially at its currently discounted price.
