I haven't seen any Star Wars movies. I don't know much about the star wars universe except that it is sci-fi, there is a gremlin and they have neon swords (very cool by the way: it reminds me of He-Man/Thundercats).
The complete saga has just released on BD containing 6 movies. What order should I watch them in? Should I watch them in order of release or in chronological order based on the story (which I have no idea how it would end up being)?

Thanks

Watch Episodes IV-VI and then I-III. Watching the prequels first will ruin all of the twists in the original trilogy.

Please ignore the hyperbole and make up your own mind to whether you can enjoy the overall series or just one trilogy or movie whatever.

You can watch them in Chapter order or when they were released, it's up to you.

Watch them in the order they were released.
But I'll be honest and admit that I've never seen the prequels. I didn't like the first three films, and since people say the prequels are torture compared to the OT... well, I'll probably never watch them.

Someone in the previous thread suggested watching it in IV -> V -> I -> II -> III -> IV.

Supposedly this keeps the tension building between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and allows some interesting plot development to unfurl. I'm not sure, but I'm thinking about using that as my watch order when I show these to my girlfriend for the first time next month.

As someone who didn't watch the original or prequels until the prequels were coming out and I was in my late teens.

Don't bother, there isn't much to really take away besides that the concept of light sabers are cool.

Meh...naw, that's really not a very good order. We really aren't supposed to sympathize with Vader till Episode VI. I think it's only appropriate for the prequels to be exactly that: Prequels. Movies you watch after the original movies.

So wrong.

Lightsabers aren't even the coolest part of the saga. It's the space battles. And the music.

I hate basically everything by J Williams, the space battle may have been cool 40/10 years ago but other shows/movies/games make both the prequels and originals look awful comparatively.

But the prequels don't make one feel sorry for Vader. I watch all three prequel movies and think to myself that Anakin is a teenager throwing a temper tantrum because everyone ignores him. As far from sympathetic as I can be.

I can't believe I'm even reading this. The OT has one of the greatest scores of all time. And the action scenes are still iconic, nearly impeccably shot, and have perfect pacing. Take any of the space sequences from the OT and it beats the shit out of nearly every action scene of the past decade.

Edit: The order to watch them is easy: IV, V, VI. If you have a morbid curiosity, watch the prequels afterwards. But the OT is it's own thing. And the Prequels are their own thing. They have wildly different feels, so it makes no sense to interrupt the OT with the blandness and endless politiking bullshit of the prequels, completely ruining the flow and mood of the movies.

Don't listen to anyone that tells you to watch the prequels. Don't watch them. Just watch the original trilogy in as pure a form as you can.

Watch A New Hope (Episode IV) first, to set the scene.

Then watch The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V), and then watch it again, because its spectacular. Not just as a Star Wars movie, but as a rock solid and smart film in its own right.

Then watch Return of the Jedi (Episode VI) if you like. You'll get some character resolution, and while its not quite as good as the first two, its more than watchable and enjoyable.

Now, at this point, if you have decided that you quite like this Star Wars stuff and want to see the rest of the series, then so be it. Be aware that the second trilogy is seperated from the first by quite a few years, and introduces a whole series of new characters and worlds. It starts with the book Heir to the Empire, followed by Dark Force Rising, and the second trilogy comes to a close with the rather marvellous The Last Command.

That's it. That's Star Wars. If you really want to explore the universe further, there are always the video games Tie Fighter, Jedi Knight and the Knights of the Old Republic duology.

And that's it. Star Wars in its entirety. It was one of those really cool things that they knew when to stop at exactly the right time, to leave the franchise on a high.

If you wanted to watch them the way the filmmaker intended, you'd watch them starting with Episode 1.
A. Not too sure about that, or he would have made them in that order.

B. Who gives a fuck what the film-maker intended in this case?

Pretty much.

I'd cut my pinkie toe off with a hacksaw, live on the Internet, if they would make the Thrawn trilogy into movies.

Pretty much.

I thought Lucas had spun some bullshit yarn about not having the technology to make the first three episodes back in the '70s.

I'd love to discuss theoretical casting.

Who could provide the intelligent, calm assured voice of Grand Admiral Thrawn?

Who could play Pellaeon, the sympathetic loyal commander of the Imperial remenant?

Mara Jade? C'Boath? Karrde?

Just discussing it makes me all excited.

Yeah, that's what he said once, but he says a lot things, doesn't he?

Did you used to include the Clone Wars cartoon into your personal canon? Personally I find both to be pretty good for the most part and characterize the original trilogy more than the prequel trilogy did, despite some shitty episodes.

I'm not a big fan but this tells me he wrote or decided on what the the back story would be about after the original movie was a success and what direction 5 would go in.

It meshes well that the original had no number and then suddenly the sequel was 5 on screen.

Yeah just watch all of them, they are a genuine case of your mileage may vary. I know several people that prefer I-III to IV-VI, and my personal favourite is III.

And uh...watch them in order. It makes them a whole lot better, there's a real emotional core to the films if watched in order.

Just watch in order of release.

Also @ people bitching about the prequels. You remind me of my grandpa who insists any music that came out after Lawrence Welk show ended it trash. Personally I think the whole star wars series is pretty terrible but that's another discussion.

If you think The Empire Strikes Back is pretty terrible, then I'm really not quite sure what to do with the rest of your opinion. How is TESB terrible? Is it badly written? Badly acted? Badly directed? Badly produced? I'm curious.

No. Despite certain good things I have heard about them on occasion, I can't quite take them seriously due to their association with those three terrible movies. The story, dialogue, characters, actions and everything else about those prequels is so absurd, they actually taint associated products with their idiocy, at least to me.

Well it's got a black guy in it that's not Samuel L. Jackson for a start.
