Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Move your Mac even further ahead

If I wanted to convert home videos I shot with my iPhone to a format I can eventually burn/make a DVD (I am guessing VOB format), which program do you guys recommend I use on Mac OSX?

Is iDVD still a free download? It was part of the iLife suite for many years until Apple said :lol at DVDs. It will encode movies to DVD and create menus and motion graphics. It is slow as sin (it never advanced past the point of hobbled-to-protect-pro-apps like iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand).

Just upload it to youtube and mark it private.

EDIT: Unless you want to do it for backup. Then I would just recommend getting a big hard drive.

Alright. That's it. Switched back to Chrome this morning. In the times of Rapid/Agile browser development, you can't release a browser that is a buggy mess and then make us wait almost a month or longer to get ANY sort of bug fixes.

Yeah, I like the better GPU-acceleration of scrolling and video on Safari, but the rendering bugs and smooth then choppy scrolling were getting ridiculous. Hopefully Chrome will get GPU-accelerated scrolling and the new Flash isolation process that they're getting on Windows on the Mac soon. Given that we've gone a year from one extremely buggy Safari update to another majorly release a year later that is extremely buggy, with a tiny bit of stability, maybe, in-between, I really can't justify sticking with Safari at the moment.

Finally got my Air! It's a brand new world though, and I'm struggling. (few minutes later edit: going mad)

I want to sync my Contacts and Mails from Google with the respectives Mac apps, what's the best way to do it? I registered my Google account, but contacts won't show up in the options I can select. Same Google account is actually my iCloud account, but my contacts aren't sync with it.
Mail is also giving me trouble. I simply entered my Google ID and pass and it worked at first, fetching mails and everything... But now Mail keep asking me for my password, saying it's a wrong one when it's actually the good one. I've even desactivated two-step verif to be sure it wasn't that messing with it.

Basically it looks like everything is a mess, even though it was working perfectly on my iPhone (Google account configured as Exchange)... I'm lost.

Last thing : iPhone won't connect to iTunes. I'm getting the error "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. A secure network connection could not be established." Do you know what might be causing it?

tldr: I want to sync my Google mails, contacts and calendar with my MBA, the same way it works flawlessly on my iPhone. And iPhone won't connect to iTunes, too.
Help :(

My rMBP just refused to wake up this morning. The keyboard lights were on, but nothing happened. Closed the lid, reopened it, all lights off. No reaction to anything. Was it even on? I would've known if they hadn't removed the LED in the front. Form over function my ass. Had to hold the power button to kill it.

I've had waking up problems since my first Mac in 2007, running Leopard. How about they actually fix shit like that instead of removing and replacing useful features?

Yeah this mess they call 'Mission Control' shouldn't have been implemented in the first place. Seems to me the key design goal was to heavily make use of horizontal swipes because it's so extraordinarily easy to use, boom.

I think it has something to do with the SSD, because on every other mac with a regular HD it has never done this to me. It did it to me with a prior air I had, and now with the MBPr. I don't know what is causing it, but I did notice that when I switched from Windows to OSx with only a restart it would do it more often then if I shut it down and the manually pressed the power button after about 10 seconds. I am on Lion though the lag on ML for the Retina just drove me crazy.

I'm having this issue too. Long wait times for it to let me type my password in and then sometimes it straight up doesn't let me do anything. Having issues with Bluetooth crashing and then not letting me turn it off and on again without a reset. Grr!

Answering myself: Most of the panic from earlier has receded. It... somehow started to work. Can't explain why or how, but everything works now :x

Is there a way to sync notes between iPhone and iCloud without using a @me address for iCloud? I think I read something about this here the other day but can't manage to find it again.

Also, I still can't connect my iPhone to iTunes. I'm still getting the error message "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. A secure network connection could not be established." The iPhone is otherwise recognized by the MBA, and I can import photos just fine in iPhoto. Anyone knows what might be causing that? I had no luck googling the issue...

Thanks.

I also noticed a difference: When I completely turn it off (which I only do when it freezes, which it did today) and then turn it on again, it takes nearly a minute until my startup items are opened. All previously running apps and documents are reopened immediately, but not those which I set up as startup items.
But everything's okay when rebooting.

iMovie does not have an export DVD format option, only options to export to a device.

*Edit: Doh, it appears older versions of iMovie used to do it and then Apple took it out.

I was reading about iDVD and it seems like it did what I am looking for. However it appears it is not being developed anymore and I would have to buy the last release of it. I was hoping someone on here would know if there is a freeware option or a built in feature of Mac OSX I am not aware of.

It is a home movie I would like to give to my parents so they can watch it on their TV. They do not have any streaming capabilities.

hey, it's free. you can download it, see if ti works OK, then delete it if it sucks. there's not a lot of free software for burning ready-to-play DVDs - it's a bit of a niche. there's a few out there that cost 10 or 20 bucks. if they have a trial, check them out.

I used to use iDVD pretty often around 3 years ago. it worked OK. But having to track down an old iLife package and pay for all the apps isn't really worth it now. just try out the current offerings. searching macupdate or the mac app store will give you lots of options.

This is the one issue I have with ML.

Whenever I open Mail and shutdown it take about two minutes to actually shut off. If I don't open Mail, it takes about one second. Keep in mind, this is a mid-2012 MacBook Air with a clean install.

Any of you guys have this same problem?

Ugh mail.

Get sparrow. I never used anything but the native mail client until my new 2012 Air and now that I made sparrow my defualt app I won't ever go back to mail.

I bought a Macbook Air 2012 that came with Lion installed.
I upgraded for free to Mountain Lion with a code Apple provided.
Then made a bootable copy of it and installed it in my wife's 2011 Air. I used my App Store account so we can share the apps I have already paid for.

Question is: I have a bootable copy of Mountain Lion. Could I have installed it in my wife's Air without using my App Store account? Could I install it in any other computer like, for free?
Doesn't make much sense, but I don't see currently any impediment. :$

Yes. There are no longer license limits...officially.

You get 5 installs actually. Since you can only authorize 5 macs. Now obviously with the OS you can just deauthorize the computer and in the future authorize a new one and it will work. Aside from that apps can only be work on 5 machines since they have to e authorized.

Also I'm posting this here since I'm excited for it to come in. Just ordered this from Etsy for my new macbook air.

I will take some photos when it comes in. Ones without a ton of watermarks everywhere.

My harddrive failed on me and I had to stick a new HDD and install mountain lion. Unfortunately I couldn't fully restore my setting from Time Machine because my harddrive is smaller.

Is there any way I can pick and choose which Applications are on this new harddrive?

You get unlimited installs actually. What's limited is the iTunes store accounts linked to the machine. You can't have more than 5, but if you make a new iTunes account on the sixth computer it would work.

Do a clean install, then time machine from in ML. You'll be able to pick and choose what to restore.

I thought the five computers thing was just for iTunes, not the MAS.

That's what I thought. My impressions is that there is no 'apple account' on the computer itself. Just the app checks authorisation when you download, or maybe when you run it the first time. As in it checks that your apple Id has downloaded that app. There,s no running 'account' that sits in the machine and authorises the machine like there is in iTunes.

Yeah that's what I thought.

That’s it. There’s no authorizing or deauthorizing of Macs, like you do with iTunes media. There’s no five-Mac limit, or device limit of any kind. If you are a Mac hoarder who has 55 different Macs at your house, all running OS X 10.6.6, you can fly that Guns of Icarus Zeppelin on every single one of them.

Unless it's changed for lion/mountain lion.

Edit:lol, strange double post.

Okay, so it has been a while since Mountain Lion and I've been using Safari 6 ever since, switching from Chrome.

Remarkable performance and lots of nice touches. I don't miss Chrome. It was sluggish, buggy, and ugly. Good riddance.

But I do miss some features. I don't miss them a lot for the most part, but here it goes:

-No URL preview. Even Safari iOS does this better (long press). This is probably the worst.
-Open last closed tabs (it's possible through History, but again I think Safari iOS does this better, with a long press on the new tab button.)
-Wish it would handle more tabs on screen.

Context menu (secondary click) stuff:
-It doesn't parse a text URL when highlighted to open it up.
-Should be able to google highlighted text in a new tab by default. Holding cmd will do it, but it's not as practical.
-Google reverse image search.
-Image properties.

Also, the Gmail extension I got for it isn't very good. It doesn't show a badge with the number of unread emails :/

None of these gripes are browser switching ones, but still, any thoughts, suggestions or stuff that I'm missing here?

I've been trying to full time switch to safari but the missing extensions and functionality are dealbreakers for me. back to chrome for me.

So which calendar apps could you recommend? BusyCal looks great, but is quite expensive. And Fantastical seems a bit to minimalistic to me. By the way, it's 50% off right now.

I really like fantastical. the natural language engine for making events (and now reminders) is much faster than the editing window in iCal or making a new reminder.

I use it much like spotlight. I hit the keyboard shortcut, type out a very short sentence and hit enter. boom. new event.

"haircut every 4 weeks on sunday at 10 am." done

"pick up mom at airport tomorrow" done. it will even fill out airport in the location field in the event.

I highly recommend it. it doesn't need to replace ical completely when you want to see a big view of your calendar, but as a way to enter events, it's great and it's good to check the net 2 or 3 things you have going on.

I'm thinking about replacing Time Machine with Carbon Copy Cloner when I get home. Does it only backup the current state of the file system or is it possible to save every version like in Time Machine?

Me too. Wish it was on iOS too, though, since I do most of my calendar stuff there.

No, it's a current-state clone. I use both (well, I use SuperDuper! and not CCC, but same idea).

Interesting glitch. Occasionally when I wake up my MBP and the login screen appears, for a fraction of a second a white rectangle appears somewhere on the screen. I looks exactly like the screen zoom function (ctrl + scroll), but I disabled it yesterday.

I don't enter events that often, I'd prefer to have a nice overview of events (calendar + list). I'm gonna remove the leather bullshit from iCal and stick with it until I find something better. I'm still looking for the best calendar/todo solution. I've tried OmniFocus after getting it recommended here - it's really powerful but there's no calendar view and it would cost mit 80€ in total (Mac+iPhone+iPad)...

Me too. Wish it was on iOS too, though, since I do most of my calendar stuff there.

I see. Well, so far I have never ever needed the version browsing, but I stuck with Time Machine just in case.. okay, I'll switch. Thanks.

Since its introduction in 2007, I've used it twice. Once it totally saved my ass: apparently I'd deleted the Quickbooks file for my occasional small consulting business. My clone backup successfully cloned this deletion.

I think for most people that Time Machine makes a lot more sense. I used cloning before Time Machine's introduction and keep with it for a number of reasons (multiple backups never hurt, carrying on after a hard drive failure, etc).

CCC has an option to keep all files if you want. When it replaces a file it can store it away in a folder at the root by date for you to get to later. There's no special time-based browser like Time Machine however, but the clone will be bootable whereas Time Machine is not. But it does let you keep the files for as long as you have space on the backup drive.

I use CCC in conjunction with CrashPlan online backup for the benefit of both a local clone I can restore from if I need to and an online offsite backup for each of my computers that I can fall back on if A) my computer were stolen, B) my house burned down or C) I need to view any file on my computer from anywhere in the goddamned world via the iPhone/iPad app or the app on my computer. It's brilliant really. I can restore any file from any time and anywhere. I recommend online backup if you have the means.

There's a few things Technology wise that are always constant:

  1. SSD's are faster than HDD's in that "OMG, why did I never get an SSD until now? This is so fast! Look how fast PhotoShop launches!" sort of way.
  2. Backups are important. You don't know how unbelievably important they are until you suddenly lose everything in the blink of an eye.
  3. Multiple backups are even better when you suddenly lose both your computer drive and your backup drive.

Has there been any news if the beta fixes the skipping in the audio? It's starting to annoy me more now. I've noticed that it seems to happen more frequently once I come out of sleep.

10.8.1 out.

This update includes general operating system fixes that improve the stability and compatibility of your Mac, including fixes that:

- Resolve an issue that may cause Migration Assistant to unexpectedly quit
- Improve compatibility when connecting to a Microsoft Exchange server in Mail
- Address an issue playing audio through a Thunderbolt display
- Resolve an issue that could prevent iMessages from being sent
- Address an issue that could cause the system to become unresponsive when using Pinyin input
- Resolve an issue when connecting to SMB servers with long names
- Address a issue that may prevent Safari from launching when using a Proxy Automatic Configuration (PAC) file
- Improve 802.1X authentication with Active Directory credentials.

7.28MB. Dat delta update.

Yeah that exchange issue is a pile of shit really...SMH

Glad it's getting fix

edit* and the iMessages one too. So tempted to flip back to usual texts until iOS6 unifies my other devices

I've got an external monitor and speakers hooked to my MBP. Occasionally I want to view a video on the MBP's screen, and then I've got to remove the speaker cable as it's irritating to have a video in front of me but the sound coming from the right.
Is there any app that allows me to set the audio output device of an application based on its window? So when the MPlayerX/etc window is on the MBP's screen the sound comes from it's speakers, but when I move it to the external monitor my other speakers are used?

So is this the most stable, most polished, most feature-rich .1 update in Apple's history? And for free?!

I just hooked Apple Mail onto my work's Exchange servers and hadn't noticed any issues prior. Lemme see what this does now...

Would anyone here happen to have the color profile MBA D65L?

I know it's a shot in the dark, but I just got a new Macbook Air and the link that I previously used is now down... :/

Anyone noticed decreased battery life after this upgrade?

I checked my battery before the upgrade and it showed 8 hours right after the speedy upgrade it showed 3:40. I restarted and now it shows 6:00

I let it rest for a bit and checked activity monitor but nothing was running. Basttery is at 97% MBP late 2011

10.8.2's Facebook support is lovely, but the Mountain Lion Facebook beta had support for reflecting your Facebook event calendar in the Calendar app. No longer the case, apparently. Really hope that feature doesn't get yanked from iOS 6.

Fucking flash, always causing me problems. :|
