MAD MAX |OT| Beyond Thunderpoon

Yeah it's driving me crazy too. I'm using the alternate control scheme where square is supposed to be the handbreak but I can't figure out how to use it in game.

EDIT: Maybe it's supposed to be circle and I've just been an idiot the whole time. Will verify tonight.

Yeah with alternate controls the handbrake is on B or Circle. With default controls it is RB or R1.

Douchebag. Yes, me.

I found the handbrake to be totally weird and barely even functioned as a handbrake... more like a "stop car now" button.

The tradeoff of not being able to fire the weapon while accelerating wasn't worth it for me, so I switched back to normal (B handbrake puts fire weapon on RB, and unless you're doing the awkward two fingers on both triggers hold, it makes firing a bit more difficult)

On normal controls, there is no handbrake button at all.

I had basically ignored this game entirely, then I read the amazing OP and I was sold. 40% off GMG made it easy to say yes. Will install while I am at work then go home and check it out.

With normal controls, fully depressing L2/LT engages the handbrake, anything less is just regular braking.

So... this game any good? I fully expect a B-tier kind of game, but I'm looking at what I should play once MGSV is over and this looks like the best choice.

I honestly don't know how this game is getting even mixed reviews, I haven't had this much enjoyment with a game in awhile.. (PC version).

Agreed. I personally feel that this game did not deserve the lambasting it got from a few reviewers. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but what it does, it does damn well.

It is essentially a Mad Max game Ubisoft style with some Batman combat mixed in. People get tired of those games. Me personally I can't get enough of them.

Exactly, critics are going to criticise the largely generic tasks in the game even if they are fun for most of us.

For you.
This game is so damn awesome. And it looks so darn good!

So apparently this full price game uses pretty blatant advertising by notifying you ingame of some "free DLC" which is a car made out of an energy drink brand.

And I really don't care, as it is on a loading screen. It has not hurt me or my enjoyment of such a fun game. I am getting my $60 worth, despite the reminder for the free energy drink car that I have ignored without even blinking.

We pre-ordered this game and picked it up on Tuesday along with the movie. It's been a lot of fun so far. Was watching t.v. last night and saw 2 Mad Max game commercials. Nice surprise.

Everyone on this thread has convinced me to buy this. Do you think this should be a physical game or go digital? I try to get physical if it looks like the game is just one playthrough and then trade in.

It's free, who cares? I downloaded it and probably won't even use it.

That being said I love the caves and underground areas of this game. It's fun exploring every nook and cranny. Kind of dreading when it comes time to explore Buzzard territory though. Good thing I still have 3 strongholds of tasks to go.

Well this explains why I've not being enjoying the driving. How is this not on by default?

Exactly.

Oh no! It's a piece of free DLC from Rockstar energy drink. Let's all raise hell like we are being prodded by some unscrupulous microtransaction scheme that ruins part of the game.

Honestly, this is the sort of thing that I think is just overly embracing cynicism. Particularly the "I PAID for this game and I'm still getting ADS" part. I'm not saying that I agree with advertisements in games, mind you. There's certainly an argument to be made against rampant commercialism and the idea that poorly implemented product placement can break immersion. But I think that gets addressed on a case-by-case basis.

I think we're to a point now where it's mostly expected that games are going to have alternative revenue streams beyond just customer buys game from store and that's where all the money gets generated. If that bothers you, then you're sort of in "old man yells at clouds" territory. Now, that's not to say that it's an all out free-for-all in search of the almighty dollar and that anything goes if there's a buck to be made. I mean, if the in-game world had a Rockstar Energy Drink stand where Max could get buffs if he drank a cold, delicious can of Rockstar Energy, I'd call bullshit. But ads for free, cross promotion DLC content in loading screens? I'm not really seeing why I should be alarmed about this.

LOL, at the bolded. Yeah, then we could have a legit complaint. As it stands? It is a loading screen that reminds you that you can get a free car. About as harmless as it gets. I never even paid any real attention to it other than thinking, "Oh neat, a free car."

I played for about 2 hours last night. Game looks and feels amazing. Runs completely maxed out at about 110 fps and I'm glad I can finally put my monitor to use. Game feels great to play at that frame rate. I could probably lower some settings to get a full 144hz. But nah, game looks too good. Loving the particle and explosions especially.

I'll say the hand-to-hand combat is so god damn brutal. It looks like a man who is trying to just hit as hard and do whatever he can to kill the enemy. I love the little touches like when you daze a guy near a wall how you slam him into the wall and just use it to brace the enemy to land harder punches. Or the clothesline, or the double drop kick, or the suplex. It all looks so well done and again, brutal. The animations are great.

I'll say the Ubisoft comparisons are fair from what I've seen, but it's made better by the fact that it's so damn fun to play and look at. I will say I'm kinda disappointed(unless this changed later) that the dog doesn't come around with you even if you have the excellently voiced and animated Chumbucket. I wanted to have my poochie. It's unfairly compounded on the fact i played MGSV right before it and have only been using D-Dog as a buddy.

Overall, I can't wait to see more. I haven't really run into any sandstorms other than the one from the first camp your supposed to take over. Looking forward to that.

The way Jim phrased it made it seem like it was a notifier during actual gameplay or something. Doesn't sound like that is the case. I'm always worried about the precedents these things set though, and I wouldn't be surprised at all too see these things implemented in more insidous ways in the future once we've been made to feel comfortable with the current methods. It's just one more of many straws which is driving me away from this facet of the industry.

Regarding the whole open world thing, I 'get' open world burnout with games that have icons absolutely everywhere and it encouraged side mission burnout. Or, games like Assassin's Creed which not only have icons everywhere but a ridiculous amount of meaningless collectibles.

But here, with Mad Max? I'm having so much fun that I see the great open expanse of wasteland ahead of me (the map just goes on and on!) and I can't wait to explore it. So far, zero burnout.

The engine sounds are amazing. Early on, during a windstorm during the first takeover mission, I got wrecked by a flying piece of debris - my fault for not finding cover faster. So amazing.

My only qualm so far is that, at least early in, the harpoon seems OP... I seem to pluck drivers out of their seats way too easily. I'm guess, though, later on enemy cars will be far more armored.

Also, question -- after i win a car battle, I'm ramming each enemy car until it blows up for the scrap. Worth it? Is there a faster way?

I hope this does amazingly well, because I want more car combat games, especially one focused on customizable cars/weaponry [ie, decide your engine class, chassis class, weapon loadout based on weight/speed, tires, armor plating, etc.]. MM has some nice customization, but not quite what I dream of.

Watch the movie regardless, its so good. But no, nothing that ties in any characters or story lines from Fury Road.

And why, why, whyyyy does Chum not pronounce the word correctly. Its not "Dinky Dee" Its "Dinky DIE". Flaming heck.

Excellent news, thanks :)

Steam, here I come!

I only watched on twitch. Ending spoiler.

DAMMIT my touch sensitive touchpad just showed that spoiler to me as I was scrolling through. ARRRRRghghghghghghGhGHGHGHGHGHGHGHHGHGHGGHGH.

EDIT -- aRGGHGH. aRGHGGHGHGH.

EDIT -- man. i don't even. it hurts extra that the spoiler came from someone who didn't even play it. at least it was properly spoiler tagged so it's my own damn fault my computer pseudo-clicked it.

I only watched on twitch. Ending spoiler. Why did Max
kill cumbucket? Was he stuck? Max gave no fucks.

He was not stuck. He decided to stay together with the car, even in death. Sacrificing the car was the only option to defeat Scrotus and put an end to his carnage on the wasteland. And of course revenge.

appologies-Ill edit the post- just I could very well see him (or any reviewer) over-selling an issue-that is minor-for clicks

In the things I've seen from him, he's never really unfairly oversold an issue. Though there may be examples I'm unaware of. Even still, he's a fellow GAF and has been fighting the good fight against Konami, so I'd say cut him some slack.

When the hell do I get my first alternate car body? I chose a crappy one first time around and would love to change it.

At work so can't be specific but if you check the garage (or something else in the menus) I think it shows the other bodies and the specific quest you need to do to get them.
