Mafia: The Old Country |OT| Chuck Berries grown in Sicily

Chuck Berry Chuck Berry right now

Fuck that 8 minute race. Took me 45 mins to win that shit.
People complained about the race in the original Mafia as well as the remake on classic. Never had an issue with any of them, always passed them in one or two tries. Am I weird or the rest of y'all can't drive?

I couldn't drive very well, either. Yet I completed it on first try. Didn't feel rewarding in any sense and I was quite mad. But whatever.

I really liked this game.

- good looking
- strong story
- not bloated
- solid gameplay
- good music

If anything, game could be few hours longer. For me it's 8/10.

I'm not talking about beating just the race. It's beating it under 8 minutes to get the trophy.

I need to replay it just to get the trophy for opening a safe without a combination. I missed the two opportunities and the first time is during Chapter 3. I'll probably stay for the rest of the way through by that point. It'll be like rewatching a great single season HBO series.

How do you get all the collectibles? Just chapter select? I bailed off the 100% after the BS with the no hit trophy. Really couldn't be bothered with it

The no hit trophy? the knife fight with the don? just parry and keep breaking his defenses. you can do it! it took me a few tries too, but once you get his moves down you'll beat his ass. you'll see it really isnt that bad.

From chapter to chapter as you drive around (if you don't skip drives) collectibles will appear on the map when you get close to them. Mission specific collectibles have a little mark next to them. What I did in between the chapters was grabbing whatever popped on the map since you stay locked in RDR2 style during story time. I ended up with over half the newspapers, cards and photos just by doing that. The biggest pain in the ass are the fox statues since they're so well hidden, just like in M1.

"Various stability improvements" = we can't think of anything else, so let's just say we did.

Anyway, I finished it yesterday using Quality mode on PS5 Pro.
Just started a new playthru using Performance mode now, good timing for a patch then.

Final thoughts are the game is really gorgeous at times, especially outdoors when driving, you can see so far away with so much detail, quite impressive.
The moment to moment gameplay though is janky AF, reminds me of a PS2 game, forced stealth, insta fails when spotted, super janky animations that take you out of the immersion and don't get me started on those dumb knife fights.

If Expedition 33 didnt come out this year this would be the best narrative by far. I love how it took the read dead redemption 2 route and made the first half of the game all about the romanticisation of the mob life only for it take on a much darker tone in the second half when it all comes crashing down once
Luca died.
But by god the gameplay is some xbox 360 throwback. Hated the very very linear mission structure where you get a game over running 10 meters away from what the game tells you to do. The repetition of stealth---> gunplay---> knife fight was also felt at the midway point where the devs really couldbt come up with better gameplay scenarios. What i would pay for Tlou 2 gameplay here.

Solid 7.5 just for the story.

I just finished my playthough of this on Hard. I have thoughts that don't seem to jive with the majority in this thread, but I will preface them by saying that I'm a massive massive fan of the original Mafia (I've completed it at least 20 times over the years and would easily place it in my top 5 of all time) and thought the remake was pretty solid.

Mafia: The Old Country just didn't feel like a Mafia game nor a Mafia story to me. I enjoyed getting to know most of the characters and their motivations and thought the voice acting was extremely well done. The cutscene direction was great and kept me interested for the most part. But, I felt the story was rushed and I just didn't feel like the story made playing through the game worth it. Unlike the original Mafia, which in my opinion, had a fantastic story that really felt like being a part of a mob family. There were also not nearly enough interesting set pieces, which was a real bummer.

By the end of the game, I was so tired of the constant knife fights and forced stealth sections that I was just powering through just to see the end of the story. The gunplay was serviceable but could have been fleshed out and more entertaining. The driving was fine and I have no complaints with it, as was the horse riding. The world they created was beautiful and I loved seeing all of the great vistas, especially with the huge volcano always looming in the background. It would have been cool to see some kind of side missions or something to help the player feel a part of this beautiful map.

My love for the original Mafia surely has skewed my opinion of this game, but overall, I'd give the game a 6.5. It just felt like a slog to get through and at the end I don't really feel like I got that much enjoyment out of it.

I finished it about week or so ago and quite enjoyed it. It definitely had some jank from years past, like characters awkwardly getting into position for a cutscene or doing an action like opening a door, but it kinda felt nostalgic.

I did think that the story, which was pretty straightforward but still fun, kinda took a turn near the end and the pacing felt wrong. It wasn't as smooth as the rest of the game and felt rushed.
When Luca dies and out of absolutely nowhere, with no hints or anything, tells you to get out of the family, when the entire game he was grooming you to be a part of the family that he seemed to love

Shooting was a bit fiddly at times, but the rest of the gameplay was grand. I hate stealth, especially gameover if you fail stealth, but this game was mostly fine for someone like me.

Overall I'd absolutely recommend it. The story, characters, and world are worth the experience.

Why would there have been hints for that? In this type of life don't you think this can happen any moment without any hints? That's part of the tragedy and I'm sure this was done intentionally by the devs 100%. No offense, but this is a really strange take IMO

Did you read what I wrote right? It came completely out of the blue and it didn't make sense. The character didn't once show any signs they felt that way, ever. It was the complete opposite, actually, throughout the entire game to that point. All the other plot points you could see a mile off, but that scene was just out of place.

This is pretty much were I'm at too. Story is fine (very cliché tho) but the gameplay is often terrible. Special mention to the "stealth" part of the game where every enemy is conveniently moving to allow a very scripted progression. Haven't seen this since 2005.

Also I hate the "infiltrate this zone" just to finish in a shootout as soon as I'm reaching my target. Fuck this, if I'm being stealthy at least respect me as a player. And that shit happen at least 4 times. It feels like Hangar 13 wanted to play it safe after the debacle of Mafia 3 but they played it way too safe this time. I thought Mafia 1 Remake would help them craft a better game but... oh well, wait and see for Mafia 4 I guess.

Uh. Theorically I guess when you are dying and you have the time to rethink about your whole life, you can be more conscious or simply admit how much wrong was your life choice though you never ever talked about it before. It's not exactly so strange see such pattern in an endlife character, it's quite common even in a movie.

I don't think it's mediocre but more bad paced. Too much long introduction, useless walking and chats moments, horrible stealth execution but the shooting sequences and the body combat with some enemies seems quite engaging to me. Anyway I suspect the reasons of some many approximations coming from the budget and the limited resource of the project. Probably Mafia Remake didn't sold well as expected they decided to try again and eventually repropose a main real release in case of positive sales.

On second read, yeah I know what you meant now. But still, in his position, this is not something to share with anyone because it can cause a lot of trouble. When he was in that situation it didn't matter anymore.

That's fair, I just felt the scenario and end result of that event could've stayed as his own impactful thing, especially when Enzo gets (or had, time line is a bit fuzzy) a massive reason to do it himself anyway
pregnancy
the change of heart felt of the other character felt out of left field for me.

Still, enjoyed it and look forward to more in the future.

Yeah when I say the story is great its not that you cant predict whats gonna happen. Its a Mafia story, its ending is either youre dead, youre a rat and go to witness protection, or you become the boss at the end.
Its the dialogue and performance that carry the plot. One of the few games I just turn off subs and just listen to the characters speak and emote. Yeah I miss a few things here and there but I was locked in by chapter 4. Very little "I am here to spout exposition" characters that Kojima tend to overused in the Death Stranding games (which I adore for different reasons).

Even though the gameplay can feel a bit repetitive ("sneak, shoot, knife fight" over and over), I still really enjoyed the game. The graphics are really good (character models could be better), the story is engaging, and the characters are easy to like. The biggest drawback is the lack of depth in showing Enzo's character development—it could have been explored more. They've built such a beautiful world, and it would have been great to see some extra missions or content to explore it further. Overall, I'd give it a 7.5/10. I'd probably rate KDC2 or Clair Obscure higher, but personally, this might end up being my favourite game of the year.
