Mafia The Old Country: GAF Impressions Thread

My game-sharing buddy bought this so I tried a few chapters today. It's a very pretty and well made game made with gameplay from fifteen years ago. I don't mean that a diss as I'm perfectly enjoying this, bad accents and all. Tried Quality mode on XSX with unlocked V-Sync while in 120Hz mode and it feels like playing a 40fps game with occasional tearing here and there. I think I will stick with that, because Performance mode is noticeably less visually appealing.
The thing that really I don't get it what are supposed to be the cliché reported in some reviews which put this title behind the more modern production? Because to me the cinematic in this game to shit on the head of most of the AAA games knew.

I had been playing on PS5 Pro on Quality mode. Out of curiosity, switched to Performance mode and sooooo much better plus it looks identical. Can't see a difference.

Just finished it.

Most 4/10 game of my life. My first mafia game and my last.

This is a gamepass/PS plus game for when you just have truly nothing better to play.

Good visuals a game does not make.

Nothing about the story will surprise you. A retard could see where this was going after chapter 3.

Initial great impression, terrible mid game slog of plot, predictable outcome for all characters.

Nice dialogue nice visuals. Everything else is absolute dog water.

I noticed immediately more blurried texture on the ground in the mid/long distance. Don't know if it's the worst AF or the lower resolution but it's quite apparent.

They're probably referring to the characters themselves. "Cliche" = it follows certain genre stereotypes, which it does. The mafioso are exactly as you'd expect mafioso to be, similar to how you've seen them portrayed in movies many times. And men from 1904 Sicily act like men from 1904 Sicily, not like men from 2025 San Francisco. And women, likewise.

Personally, I'm good with that. I'm not sure what reviewers were expecting. Many reviewers seem to judge games based on what they expect or want devs to do, as opposed to what the dev themselves are aiming for. Ah well. I don't give much credence to reviewers anyhow.

I wouldn't trust anyone that gave Super Metroid a 6/10.

What I've been doing is quitting out after every couple chapters and going to free roam so I can clean up whatever collectibles and those trinacria coins that have appeared on the map. Then I head over to Pasquale's and get whatever weapons and stuff I need which then carries over into the story. Convenient.

The Free roam also gives you a chance to really soak in the sounds and atmosphere since the story has you briskly running or riding past everything. The game is utterly fucking gorgeous.

Thanks for pointing out the free roam mode. I didn't know about that. For folks who don't know, you can find it under the CarCyclopedia option on the main menu. Just take out a car and you'll be in it.

It's a nice mode if you just want to take a drive and look at the landscape or poke around some of the cities. You can see collectibles on the map if you zoom in. There isn't any interactivity beyond that, unfortunately - no one to talk to, apart from the lady in Pasquale's shop. I collected a few trinacria and upgraded my knife and rifle. As Chuck said, those upgrades transfer over to your main game.

4/10 is not a mid game...something doesn't up in your opinion. For how long the story could be disappointing (guess personal taste) it's almost better narrative game than Mafia are the normality hearing some of you which not seem the case from my personal experience, unfortunately.

It's okay, not everyone can appreciate quality.

I think that the game from a story standpoint is really good. Its well written, its well presented, characters are interesting and graphics are solid. The problem for me is the gameplay. The game is extremely restrictive in how you approach any situation, the gameplay segments are extremely short and limited and when you finally get some freedom, the game brings you back again to cutscenes and following npcs. I have to admit that even though some parts are good, I am struggling to find enjoyment from a gameplay perspective because I am barely playing. This just feel more like a Supermassive videogame, which is basically an interactive movie

This sound like what people think sony "cinematic" games are.

I don't get it. If your TV can produce more nits then it can go brighter and, other than 2001+ content, reproduce faithfully what the image is demanding. What am I missing?
I thought the picture was too dim. Saw that paperwhite was at 100 and did some research. Where it says paperwhite value should be around 10% of your screens HDR brightness capabilities. 200 looks just about right. To my eyes.

I don't know why games don't just stick to the configuration that every console has. You have to take a tutorial to config your Xbox or PS, and then the game is all like: nnnnaaaaaahhhh… here's my arbitrary slider. Have fun.

Chapter 3 and it's fantastic, it's a super cinematic third person action/adventure game, honestly gameplay wise so far there's nothing special, but the graphics, atmosphere and story simply hook you, can't stop playing it.
They did an amazing work in recreating the atmosphere of Sicily also with a sicilian dub.

I hear you. It's not for everyone. It is very story heavy, and there are plenty of sections where you just have to ride along and listen to what's being said. I don't mind that myself, but people who like a more action-focused game will be bored.

The only part I'd disagree with is the comparison to Supermassive games. Supermassive games have very little action apart from occasional, easy button prompts for quick-time events. Old Country does have a lot of "gallop and talk" segments, but it also has shootouts, car chases with explosions, horse chases with gunfire, stealth, bandit raids, and knife fights. I'm not sure what a good comparison would be, but it's got a lot more action than Supermassive games do (and much better dialog).

Reddit dude tells me base PS5 has 40fps mode as well, is this true? Because XSX should too then. This would be a great surprise.

I'm pretty sure it does? It let me tick on VRR in the menu on quality mode on my base ps5 and it's super super smooth. Def doesn't feel like 30

That'd be great.

But other folks are saying the base consoles hardly retain a solid 30fps, I wanna see some performance videos for this game.

Surprising there's no channel doing them, even the Elemenobits channel.

They do have a Sicilian voice over for more authenticity, but honestly I think I prefer the English speaking cast.
I appreciate that for the English cast they actually hired some Italian speaking actors like Enzo's actor Riccardo Frascari for it to sound more authentic. But some accents of the minor roles sound perhaps a little more forced.

Tearing is something I thought was a thing of the past, but I guess not. Still, if I can cope with Monster Hunter Wilds in resolution mode with a unlocked framerate, I definitely can with some tearing too.

This game suffer of stutter on ps5 pro even with VRR. I really starting to hate UE5. Why didn't used the engine of Mafia remake? Every time there is a more demanding scene there is a traversal stutter. I miss the smoothness of Mafia remake and hate this shit. It's practically impossible have a steady fps in any mode and I can't avoid to notice it.

Papi are you stroking it or something while playing? Why is taking you so long

And that's deducting the six hours I left it on while working Friday.

I've been waiting for this game for years. It takes me longer than usual because I like to stop and smell the roses and admire the craftsmanship. Also going for the platinum and getting as many of the collectibles as I move along.

I don't bumrush at all through new releases like 90% of the forum. Especially ones I've been excited for.

I understand this so damn well.

This is exactly how I'll be playing GTA 6 at launch. I'll complete the mandatory prologue mission and after that I'm just gonna walk, check out how NPCs behave and react to when I greet or insult them, check out all the insane details the dev put in. It's gonna be a while before I get busy with any missions, lol.

I can't compare it to MHW as I haven't played it, but I rarely saw it here. It helps that XSX has a superior VRR so I guess I only see it when it drops below 40 fps threshold.

Same here. I'm taking my time, relishing it. I think part of the reason is that I know it's a short game, so I don't want to rush through it. I haven't been waiting for the game for years like you have - I wasn't really sure whether I'd buy it, although I'm glad I did - but now that I've bought it, I want to get the most out of the experience. That means slowing down to savor it.

GAF go buy this game right now. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. This game hits all the right points for me. It has a very unique and intriguing setting, great art direction and graphics, perfect music, tight gameplay, AAA production values. But above all, it's the story and sense of place that it brings. I feel like I am there in 1904 Sicily. I love roaming around, taking in the sights, knowing these characters. Highly recommend. Cant wait to play more.

Edit- Forgot about its dang good price. If we won't reward such good rightly priced single player games, we deserve the live service or by the numbers open world garbage we get

That's true about VRR. XSX is my main, so once I get the game it should be fine. But it's a great surprise that there's 40fps on base consoles after all. I often find that the best setting, good balance of visuals and performance.

VRR doesn't fix UE5 stutter from what I knew and I noticed only the typical traversal stutter of the UE. When the data is all loaded stutters disappear but in the most demanding area it requires always some second to load. On ps5 pro at least.

Mafia franchise went from one of the most creative, ambitious games of all time to the quintessential case study of modern slop 'game design as a commodity product'. They went from practically trying to invent a new game genre to using a generic third person shooter gameplay scaffolding that could be used for nearly any setting you want. With a simple retexture and new writing, you could turn this scaffolding into a SciFi game, a modern era open world crime game, a western. You name it, as long as you can press B to crouch behind chest high cover and use a weapon wheel, it can be anything your heart desires.

Finito.

What a ride. Few things...

The game is a triumph, showcasing what I believe is the happy medium between too long and too short in length and content.

I didn't want it to end. By far my favorite game in the series, and as of this point, my GOTY.

My biggest critique is that H13 didn't realize the gem they had, and decided not to pad it out with additional quests and content (probably due to feedback from the third entry).

I wouldn't have mind setting up and running a few rackets, and collecting, within the context of the story.

Also, the ending was perfect. I didn't think they'd land it, but they weren't afraid to end it properly.

For anyone on the fence. The game is a great weekend experience, and for the price point you can't beat it. The gunplay is great and the stealth sections are very forgiving, they never felt like a chore. One of the best parts is that many of them don't result in failure state for the game and you can shoot it out.

This was the perfect game to be released in the absence of GTA 6. I eagerly await the next entry. Great job Hangar 13.

9/10.

There is no 40fps setting in this game as such, just quality (30fps) with a toggle to unlock the framerate. And definitely feels more like a 40fps game than 30.

As a true mafia game, the story is inspired by the best gangster films, and the detailed world makes you feel as if you are really there in the early 1900s. I really enjoy driving (especially with realistic car handling settings) and just looking at beautiful Italian vistas
You sold me to it. Will buy it next month, won't find time to play it now, unfortunately :/
