Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
Feels a bit awkward to me because I didn't even notice the manga jumped back and forth with flashbacks so often when I marathoned it (I caught up back when it was released in volume bulks and I didn't notice then either, until they finally released the chapters separately). I didn't think about it until I saw it mentioned here. So um, not an issue to me.

I wonder if that counts in the "upandaway is completely oblivious to pacing problems again" or if I have a more sensible argument here.

I didn't notice any problem with it either. Its a stylistic decision that like any other stylistic decision, sometimes works better than other times.

Its either another case of MangaGAF Standards™ or I just like the series and don't really care about the flaws.

Sure, it starts with a battle, but that's like an establishing battle that doesn't show off any of the Scouting Corps. battle techniques, etc.

I guess I don't find that any of this stuff bothers me that much, particularly not in "read all 40 chapters over a few days" format. Most of the "this sucks" complaints I recall seem to me to be stuff that was always there and if a person were to hate it, they would hate it from Chapter 4 or 5.

It just feels like wasted potential, when SnK focuses on humans ingenuity, trust, sacrifice, and fear it really shines. Moments like Sasha stalling a Titan with a bow to save a young girl or the rookies coming up with a plan to kill 7 Titans and save everyone are just incredible. Watching Titan-Eren wrestle with the Armored Titan or block a cannon ball to save his friends just make me go "ehh".

I'm just questioning whether this is a case of your expectations about the genre that SNK was going to occupy being unrealistic/unfair or whether its a legitimate complaint about the series plotting and pacing.

(That sounds offensive, but I don't mean it that way.)

I'm sure that's part of the problem, when Eren "died" to save Armin I was like "OH SHIT" and was legit impressed that a series would have the balls to kill off it's main character and got me excited for a series where every battle could be any characters last.

I feel like "anyone can die" as a trope is sort of overrated. Have we reached the level of straight up Plot Armor? I'm not sure about that yet.

Well if we look at the state of our 10 ranked rookies plus Ymir/Armin aka main and supporting cast

1. Mikasa- Alive
2. Reiner-Alive/Titan
3. Bertholt-Alive/Titan
4. Annie- Crystalized/Titan
5. Eren- Alive/Titan
6. Jean- Alive
7. Maarco- Dead
8. Conny- Alive
9. Sash- Alive
10. Christa- Alive
Ymir- Alive/Titan
Armin- Alive

I'll throw in Rivaille and Hanji as main/supporting characters too, both of which are alive still.

As someone said last page, very few named characters have died, or if they are named they're introduced like 2-3 chapters before they become Titan food.

It's the best site for everything manga related, they often get their hand on scoops even earlier than Japanese sites.

It's a bit weird, but for some reason I was never interested in manga news or news about the authors. Probably because I have enough material for the next year or two and whatever happens in the industry wouldn't affect me.

Red Colored Elegy vol 1 End

A great beautiful and tragic love story with simple yet elegant and brilliant art style. The manga follows the struggling artist, Ichiro, and the animator Sachiko and their unstable relationship as they face opposition from their parents and difficluties to make ends meet.

One of the unique things about the manga is the reliance on the visuals to tell the entire story. There aren't that many dialogues and the manga utilizes a minimalistic artistic style with little to no backgrounds except for the scenery panels. It really works as the art isn't busy and helps you focus on the characters themselves and the imagery that helps convey their emotions and thoughts. There is also a sense of repetitiveness and pattern in the way the panels are laid out. Hayashi uses the 4 wide panels per page layout constantly throughout the manga especially which is something I don't see that often in other manga. The biggest features of Hayashi's art is the usage of darkness and shadows during the tense and depressing moments of the story which there a lot of. They are very striking and well drawn and utilized.

I did have a little trouble following the story. The panels sometimes didn't flow naturally and there were a lot of jumps. And with little dialogue, it makes it hard to know if you are reading the same scene or if the scene totally changed to something else. Also I did wish there were more facial expressions or some effort to draw them more detailed. With a manga that relies on the art a lot, not seeing the characters faces is very hindering in understanding their feelings.

I'm definitely planning on rereading this manga again to appreciate the art and the visuals more.

Monster Volume 3

This series is crazy addictive, I'm trying not to power though it in one day so I can take time to think about all the events that have transpired. I'm glad to see Lunge get kicked down a peg for his craziness and I wish Eva would just exit the plot her bumbling drunk antics are really annoying. The chapters that introduce Dieter are really powerful and the more we learn about Johan the better this series gets. Every chapter I'm on edge waiting for the monster's next appearance.

Monster 1-20
Starting off really good but It's kind of like reverse death note syndrome (at least from what I can remember) where I feel all this stuff that is happening right now could've been avoided if Tenma just spoke to inspector Lunge.

Lunge has believed Tenma was guilty for 9 years, sitting down and talking to the man wouldn't change that fact as you'll see

What is a good target for a first volume Jump series to do to not have it be canceled early?
It depends. What do you consider 'canceled early'?

Code:
Volume 1 total sales before dropping off chart
(except Kurogane, which didn't chart until v2)

Haikyuu!! 31428
Koisome 35058
Kurogane v2 16636
Kuroko 42953
Nisekoi 45317
Pajama 31899
Psyren 28118
Saiki Kusuo 34116
Shokugeki 89378
Takamagahara, Cross Manage, Kiruko, and Hungry Joker first volumes never charted so there is no data.

Kurogane made it to 8 volumes and it never showed past 50k on the charts. For comparison, Koisome sold more than 50k by its second volume but it got shown the door at volume 4. Psyren never hit 100k (closest on chart was 95k total) but it got up to volume 16.

Kuroko doesn't have particularly rosy first volume sales, but now it sells more than Bleach. The first volume sales are probably a factor in whether or not a series gets cancelled, but I think by the time a volume comes out and the numbers roll in, the series has either already fallen before chapter 17 or is in danger of cancellation because of the ranking.

No ST&RS?

I didnt know Psyren was that unpopular, though I never even knew about it while it was running jump only when viz brought it over here.

You do realize that that show hasn't reached It Was His Sled status yet, right?

Swagamoto 5

Not all that impressive. The beginning with the lunch package plate was pretty cool, but relatively harmless after that. Maybe he's turning from Swagamoto into Slackermoto, amirite?

Heh, I just recently found out that we've already got What a Wonderful World and Hikari no Machi. I don't think we'll get Ctrl+T though since artbooks usually sell like crap here so you can be jelly at Kurita for that but I guess we all already are.

Hey I never said we had Ctrl+T in France!
Only saw it at my Japanese library :lol
Asano stuff published in France :
Punpun
Solanin
Un Monde Formidable (What a Wonderful World)
Le Quartier de la Lumière (Hikari no Machi)
Le champ de l'arc-en-ciel (Nijigahara/Holograph)
La Fin du Monde, Avant le Lever du Jour (Sekai no Owari to Yoakemae)

Even in advertising Swagamoto is still swag.

Oh my...

There's a new Baby Steps chapter out. I don't care about it but I know some people do.

Don't worry Murata, we understand.

I skimmed through the raw. Yeah it's short but it looks fantastic.

Don't worry Murata, we understand.

Just read it then, its only about 9 pages :p

Edit: Actually, I think this is great that he is going to try and do the 100 pages for the upcoming Chapter on the 16th. Judging from the original comic on what's happening next, I think that it would be suitable for that chapter's size to be a lot bigger than the normal sized ones.

He needs to stop dicking around, get some good sleep and put the chapters out on a fixed schedule. As an entitled internet user, I demand it.

Laughing Banana

Weeping Pickle
Murata and Inoue are the kind of authors that I put in my own imaginary group called "Page Spread Authors."

Fantastic drawing skills but often emphasizing the art so much to the point where they sacrifice the longevity and the content of the chapters.
