Deadman Wonderland 58

I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy reading the series but after these last two chapters..

tumblr_m8h68cekeC1qig8s8o1_500.gif

I've been denied a Sad ending afterall.

Would have been great if Shiro died while in the coma.

Senji and Minatsuki were the two best characters in the entire manga. Will sorely miss seeing them again.

I don't know if anyone wants to do this with me but I'm going to be re-reading all of Initial D in honor of it ending. Would anyone be interested in joining? New readers would be great too :)

I read chapters 1-26 last night. Shingeno's art in the races is still so incredible. He also draws some of my favorite "cartoon-y" faces when the characters get the weird fish lips going. The fucking 90's fashion sense for the characters is hilariously terrible as well.

Deadman Wonderland Final

Weak fake happy ending. Overall I enjoyed the series but the ending left a lot to be desired for me. I agree the pregnancy must have impacted the ending it felt pretty rushed at the end.

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Deadman Wonderland END

Not the worst manga ending I've seen, but it did feel rushed and out of place.

I'm really enjoying this manga. I've wanted to read it for years, so I'm glad that I'm finally getting around to it.

Hoshi Mamoru Inu/Stargazing Dog
I only picked this up because, as an artist, I do not like Murakami Takashi's work, so when I saw that he wrote a manga, I wanted to give it a chance. It was beautiful. It was also fucking depressing. It had an interesting moral, too. Murakami Takashi hates that in modern society, one is incapable of living a simple life. An individual must adapt to contemporary living, and if they don't, they're essentially doomed. If you want to read a sad, nice story about a selfless man the sacrifices he makes for his dog, check it out.

Man, you hate murakami's work? We can't be best friends now. :p

I had no idea that he wrote a manga though. Will definitely check it out. Though you can see a lot of that philosophy in his artworks as well.

Could have been better but it was okay. I liked how the author showed what happened to the characters and what they are doing. I would have preferred a sad ending though but I can deal with this. I feel like if there would have been no hiatus we would have had a different better ending though.

I should explain why I dislike it. I really like his older pieces, but when he started doing so much focus on deconstruction of contemporary Japanese pop culture, he became such a commercial artist. It started as social commentary on the exaggerations in things like manga by focusing, for example, on features that make something moe. The issue was that he became so commercially oriented, that instead of social commentary, the art became that which he was supposedly commenting on. Here is the epitome of my disdain.
It's disgusting that he made money by selling this. Oh, the other reason I dislike him as an artist is that he uses Hiropon factory to create his works. He doesn't paint or sculpt his pieces anymore. All that being said, I do like some of the superflat paintings.
I wish we could be besties, though.

I'm a fan of Murakami – well, his older stuff at least, I haven't seen much of his more recent output – so I'll have to check this out.

What do you think about Aya Takano's manga?

Fairy Tail Special (Punishment Special)

The fanservice message was misleading, Gray was just the same old, Natsu too on the color page and even the chapter itself. Otherwise changed my view on Juvia that was kind of nasty that one panel, hopefully Gray avoids in the future.

Stargazing Dog almost made me cry. After reading it, I went downstairs and pet my dog for a long time.

It's been a few years since I studied contemporary Japanese artists. That name sounds familiar, but looking at her pieces doesn't remind me of anything. I like it, though. It's charming and the people are so wispy. My favorite artist from Japan is Hisashi Tenmyouya. He has a sort of ukiyo-e revival style. I love it.

.

In no order

  • Eyeshield 21
  • Rurouni Kenshin
  • Yu Yu Hakusho
  • Onai Master
  • Super Lovers
  • Yu-Gi-Oh!
  • Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Hikaru no Go

Yes, my list is mostly Shounen, yes, you may suck my left nut.
Also, while i'm sure DTL is the only other person who will put Super Lovers on his list, I think more people should check it out. Doesn't even require that much of an open mind IMO.

I need to try to read other stuff than shonen haha.

Top ten (changes since the last time this question popped up)
1.Full Metal Alchemist
2.Eyeshield 21
3.GTO
4.Emma
5.Bambino
6. One Piece
7.Yotsuba
8.Otoyomegatari
9. Silver Spoon
10. Assassination Classroom

Shokugeki no Soma and Ao no Exorcist and a few others would have got in but I hold the top five in really high regard. I don't know, I end up following way too many series (some I don't even know why I follow) so it's hard to pick my solid top ten. Like for example Deadman Wonderland could of been in my top 10 but those last two chapters and pacing after the haitus knocked the story off kilter.

Dragons Rioting 8 Nice flashback chapter and looking forward to a badass fight.

She was one of the artists Murakami promoted when he formed KaiKai Kiki along with Chiho Aoshima and the other 'Superflat' artists. I imagine she payed some dues in the Hiropon Factory.

She's done a couple manga if you like her style. Spaceship ee (originally a web series I believe) and Cosmic Juice are available in english, although perhaps out of print.

Kingdom 170-173

The end of a legend and the beginning of many more, what a way to end this stupendously epic arc. The reaction's of the various states to the shocking news was a nice touch, as was the epilogue with the various foot soldiers and their families. The little side story bit for the last two volumes with Kai was also a nice little bonus.

This is also where the first season of the anime for the two of you that cared.

I dunno, I'm not a fan of his sculptures honestly, but I could still see the sense of satire and grotesque cuteness in a piece like that.

Though I also just like his style. Even his directly commercial pieces like his collaboration with kanye or LV still produce work that I enjoy. Also, creates some really funny moments.

Didn't you already dislike Juvia to begin with?

I thought the special was good, I actually kinda liked the whole Kana and Wendy thing. Best part of all it wasn't forced or melodramatic and actually tied in well with Kana's character.

Pantherlily's shitty soliloquy at the final panel was totally redundant though...

Spaceship EE is pretty enjoyable, the worldview is actually surprisingly well-developed despite it not being particularly relevant to the theme of the story.
