Marathon Development Update

20h - Marathon Dev Team

Thank you not only for your passionate feedback around the Marathon reveal and Alpha playtest, but also for your patience while we took the time to listen closely and chart our next steps.

Through every comment and real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been strong and clear. We've taken this to heart, and we know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion. After much discussion within our Dev team, we've made the decision to delay the September 23rd release.

The Alpha test created an opportunity for us to calibrate and focus the game on what will make it uniquely compelling—survival under pressure, mystery and lore around every corner, raid-like endgame challenges, and Bungie's genre-defining FPS combat.

We're using this time to empower the team to create the intense, high-stakes experience that a title like Marathon is built around. This means deepening the relationship between the developers and the game's most important voices: our players.

Over the next few months, we'll continue closed testing(including participants from the Alpha) to deploy gameplay updates and test new features as they come online.

Some of our immediate focus areas will be:

  • Upping the Survival Game
    • More challenging and engaging AI encounters
    • More rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events
    • Making combat more tense and strategic
  • Doubling down on the Marathon Universe
    • Increased visual fidelity
    • More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
    • A darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy
  • Adding more social experiences
    • A better player experience for solo/duos
    • Prox chat, so social stories can come to life
You'll hear from us again later this Fall when we can share the progress we've made, alongside the game's new release date. Thank you again for your patience and— much more importantly— your passion. Your continued feedback will help us make Marathon the incredible gaming experience we all know it can be.

Can't wait to see what the grand total is on this bad boy whenever it releases.

Another Bungie failure incoming. No one should be surprised though by any of this. Marathon is grade A garbage and nothing they do can possibly fix this. Should have made it a single player game you retards.

Shocking. After reading that blog post, every change sounds good, but it seems to me that this will be a year + delay to implement all those changes.

Wouldn't be surprised if Sony kills it entirely.

That grim livestream + not being mentioned on SOP at all = this game is fucked

They need to just kill it, close the studio and call it a day. And add them to the pile of "great acquisitions".

Hey look, another one.

But don't worry guys, Concord was insufficiently differentiated to be a success. This time will be different.

Cancel before it's a bloodshed.
Ngl, Bungie has to be the worst acquisition Sony has ever made.

I really dislike the gaas marketing, especially delays. It's overly optimistic and trying to be your best Freind. Ugh. Just get to the point without rolling my eyes lol

It's the right decision and it isn't shocking at all. The only thing shocking was people like Luke Stephens (grifter) saying that it wasn't going to be delayed when everything we saw suggested that it would.

The game needs at a minimum an additional 6 months to cook and I think it needs 1.5 to 2 more years to cook and should include a singleplayer. I think it's disappointing that they didn't address that, but ultimately we'll see what happens.

I dont like Luke Stephens (his videos are overly long and cringe) but what makes him a grifter

Being wrong isn't grifting

It wont be a short delay. If they are going to show what they got in the fall and then a beta, it doesn't sound like a late 2025 release where they delay it a couple months in time for December Xmas sales.

Sounds like a 2026 game.

But for those of you who predicted a delay, you were right. Especially if you predicted it before the stolen art issue which made the situation worse.
