Marathon Releases September 23, 2025

You're jumping to conclusions on the success of this based on a small presentation?

Look its hard to predict GAAS success. Fortnite was ridiculed at launch, do you recall? Now I'm not saying its gonna be Fortnite, but I don't think its gonna be concord either. I'm sure it can find a spot in the Helldivers 2 range or Apex Legends.

I'm not the target demographic. But I can recognize that it has all the checkbox of what streamers love to play on Twitch for FPS games.

If this finds success, and I have no reasons to doubt it will because this is not concord, they make bank. Can't spell it out any simpler than this. Apex Legends with ~300k active players on Steam made $3.4B and that was almost a year ago.

No I don't think Sony will go negative on Bungie. I doubt this stopped single player games. Sony did chase GAAS with those studios though which I think might have been a mistake, you have to spot what the studio wants to work on and let them do their best. Bungie team now (nothing like Halo 1 team), seems to love MP, so you let them work MP. Naughty Dog should clearly work SP, etc.
Naughty Dog made some good multi-player games on PS3/4 with Uncharted 3/4 and TLOU, why can't they continue to do that?

Even Santa Monica made a good multi-player game with God of War: Ascension.

Looks bland. They have Destiny, they don't need to make another multiplayer focused game in a crowded market that they themselves saturated. They should have used the Marathon IP to create an FPS with a great single player campaign like Halo, something which barely exists these days.
But Bungie is a GAAS shooter company. The days of giant SP campaigns complementing MP modes are long over unless it's a SP action/adventure kind of game like Stalker.

Bungie's skillset is a Halo/Destiny/Marathon kinds of game too. They arent going to make anything else. The last time they made something not a shooter for consoles/PC was about 25 years ago when they made Oni and Myth games.

To Destiny 2 Players, would we be surprised if something like this existed as a Destiny 2 game mode? Press E to grab motes.

I will 100% play this if its casual enough for me and the lore is interesting. Looking at the graphics the recommended spec might even be very generous.

Honestly i kinda wish this was a single player but with the extraction being the main multiplayer. Cause i love the cinematic and how it captures the world, specifically the down time, the exploration of it. Like i just feel like the game play it looks good but it seems like endless action.

I was just watching a tarkov game and its quiet the creepiness, the anticipation like i can see why people really fuck with that game.

I wish we could saw a match fully with no cuts.

Still will get the game i just think they could've done more here.

Yes, the gameplay looked fantastic. Please list all the extraction shooters with sci-if lore and techno-future art style in the market.

None. They are all pretty much mil-sim and err so far into realism it almost becomes a chore. This is providing the extraction genre and streamlining it. Looks chaotic and a blast.
I mean... good for you? But that was not what you said on your first comment.

No no no, you said you're gonna show me the games I like and "you'd say they're shit and suck your own dicks"

Welp,

I get the negative reception. I'm fairly disappointed.

- It looked way too fast paced, arena shootery focused.
- Outside of the Locus shield, I didn't notice a single shell ability.
- Looked completely uninterested in building tension.
- Maps looked small AF designed to prevent any mid range or long range engagements.

There's a lot of immature responses here but I interpret that as people having higher expectations than this.

Looking forward to hear from clarky clarky , James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford , and MiguelItUp MiguelItUp
Okay, so I just found some time to step away and watch it. I landed where I basically thought I would. I give them kudos for the art style as it really helps it stand out and "look different" from other extraction shooters. But nothing I saw got me super excited. The overall look and vibe was the biggest take away for me.

Knowing Bungie's gameplay I figured it'd be just as fast paced as ever, and it looks that way. Which definitely affects tension that's generally felt in ES games.

My take away is that I'll certainly give it a shot and see how it feels. The feel and vibe could be what brings it all together.

But right now, I'm not feeling blown away at all.

So Sony cancelled these games that have crazy good gameplay mechanics and game worlds:
God of War
The Last of Us
Spider-man
Horizon

For Concord and now this?

I would of preferred play a TLOU battle royal or do some Spider-man co-op missions then play these generic shooters.
Horizon Online isn't cancelled and neither is the NCSoft-developed MMO.

And I'd argue anything Bungie puts out in the FPS genre has just as good or better gameplay mechanics than God of War or The Last Of Us do in their respective fields, plus they have nothing to envy them in terms of worldbuilding -- Destiny's lore is sick.

Good luck to anyone who has a difference of opinion and tastes in games. Just shows how wildly out of touch some are, these are the most played games out there

"Marathon is going to launch as a premium product, meaning players will be asked to pay full price."Marathon will have a battle pass, 3 maps (4th map arriving shortly after launch)

Its a full price game though with battlepasses, the competition is free. That's a lot to ask.

Only 3 maps? That cant be right.

Welp, I was expecting $40...

I liked the graphics and the music but it doesn't seem like it'll appeal to a wide audience. Gunplay is something Bungie does well, so no worries on that front. The extraction shooter concept is nice, I liked Hunt Showdown, but it didn't manage to keep me hooked for long. I feel like it won't have much of a chance unless it's f2p though. I'd like to try it, but not for 20-40 dollars(or more!).

I wonder how many people actually watched the creator alpha highlights towards the end of the stream (around 2:34:00), because the actual gameplay doesn't make it seem all that fast-paced at all.
Unless we have different definitions of fast-paced:

I think it's going to be a hardcore squad-based game that only appeals to clan-heavy players. Expect to be required to use your mic and be part of a team. No solos in this one at all. I mean, there will be some players who try to go lone wolf, but those guys are going to get mopped up by clan players, and that's only if this is a success, and that will require more than the hardcore Destiny clans.

That's the main reason I think this will flop hard after a few months.

Sure they can but modern SP games take a long time to make now. Its hard to have everything.
Naughty Dog can just make a 3rd Studio dedicated to multi-player.

There's no excuses from Sony for canceling those games. The gameplay from those videos shows how insane those games would be if released on modern engines.

I don't think it's as hardcore as you claim

It's as hardcore as you want it to be

The main hook of the game is completing contracts and progressing your character, and you can lose a lot of matches and still accomplish that goal

Color me surprised. It's exactly what I was expecting. If anything they've leaned more into the hardcore side of things.

What didn't hit for you?

I really like "down moments" in games.

There's what you're discussing with your teammates traversing and empty space when no enemies are around.

There's what you're discussing with teammates when you hear gunshots ahead, or see enemies off in the distance.

Then there's what you're discussing when the fight turns hot.

My game of the generation to this point is The Finals. Sooooo much of those Marathon gameplay clips look exactly like fights in The Finals. The pace, the distances, the abilities...almost identical. The shields, the dashes, the double jumps, the proximity mines...I've burned through all of those mechanics in The Finals the last year.

Now when this comes out, I'm never touching The Finals again. I'm still getting this day 1. I just wanted something with a much larger scope.

I wanted an Escape from Tarkov killer and got a The Finals Extraction Shooter.

Edit : Full Price ?!

It's the new game from the finest FPS studio of the last quarter of a century, what were you expecting?

Battlefield will also be multiplayer-only (as it's been several times over the past decade) when it drops later this year, but something tells me the majority of this forum won't be bitching about that. Is it the Sony-adjacent nature of Marathon than brings the moving goalposts into the equation?

I dunno, if they go the casual rout like The Division, it might see success on consoles, but knowing Bungie, they cater to dedicated clan networkers these days. If it is of the hardcore variety, it might find enough support on the PC platform. Destiny 2 worked for a long time on consoles because a solo player could manage even though it also catered to dedicated clans, but with this style of objectives (as we know of right now) it looks like it is going to be taking a huge gamble.

I'm judging the game for what it brings to the table, and for now it's not really promising.

As for Battlefield I will be able to test it via EA Pro without paying full price and having to gamble but if it's shit then I won't play it any longer.
BF is not an extractor shooter so I don't think that the comparison is relevant anyway.

I don't understand the point about the "Sony-Adjacent nature of Marathon" can you elaborate ?

All the footage was edited, i expect a lot more downtime than what we saw. Especially with 18 player maps.
I don't buy this btw.

This showcased the most appealing aspects of Marathon. If they felt they had interesting downtime moments, they would have featured it in the hour long presentation.

They put combat front and center because non combat wouldn't show well...because they didn't invest in that part of the game.

There's a great clip from Where Eagles Dare of Clint Eastwood scouting a snowy nazi compound with binoculars. If that type of experience was in the game, they would have featured it.

This is giving me Concord vibes. Likely won't bomb as hard considering there doesn't seem to be a woke agenda behind it, but they need to go the free to play model or I just see this game as DOA.

fuck the game man, alberto mielgo new short dropped

I'm not being sarcastic here. Kudos to the art team and director of that short. Beautiful.

Anyone even remotely linking this to Concord is out of their mind. Peoples slapping concord term on anything with colors beyond brown and grey is getting tiring.

I bet you the maps are smaller than Vigors.

It's possible the map they showcased here is their smaller, close quarters map. Extraction Shooters do design like that so the loot + abilities are more appealing to the full player base.

Can only judge based on what they showed though.

Nah dude. When I watch Match of the Day (soccer highlights) I dont expect them to show all the build up but no pay off

Personally, I hate all kinds of MP Gaas, shooter extration and this Marathon doesn't do anything for me... But it's like you say, at this point I don't think anyone can be sure if an MP Gaas game is going to be successful or not because we live in a time where most of the games of this type that are big hits today were ridiculed and few or no one gave a penny for their success.

Look at the reactions to Marvel Rivals here. Including my dumb ass.

Man I'm shocked at how bad I hate the aesthetic/art direction. It's like designing the whole game in colorblind accessibility mode when you're not colorblind.

Im expecting Hunt sized maps (1km x1km) but with more layers.

Did it occur to you that they just showed a montage of the action?

You could make the same kind of videos for Hunt Showdown.

Have no interest in playing an extraction shoorter, especially full priced. I would have given it a try if was F2P cuz Bungie does shooting feel really good. But that was a sick trailer, i could watch a movie based on that. Also agree this would have made a great single player game with good story and they could have added a multiplayer mode on top of it to further monetize it.

Match of the Day highlights are not an hour long. Actually...hang on...Embark did it in 6 minutes.
