Marathon Releases September 23, 2025

Good thing they're releasing another one in two months.
I agree, yet i'd rather they invested the time and money they are throwing at GaaS to single player games, we'd have even more.

It's not full priced. It's likely $40
Yes, i didn't go through the entire thread before I posted this.
But the 40$ is an educated guess at best.
For their sake, i hope it is true or even better less than 40$. To be honest, nothing in the trailer says 40$ quality, but then again Mario Kart is an overglorified kart mini game at ~90€ so everything is possible.

it seems my prediction of marathon's future success (with the help of AI) was optimistic at 60% (and i was the pessimistc one at 50%)

this game now ot seems it has a 40% of success.

Bye Bungie, bye Hermen you're not gonna be missed

I just want to issue a formal apology to nerds Jason Schreier and Paul Tassi.

I didn't want to believe their "Marathon is in a rough spot" rumors so I made a fool of myself by disregarding them.

It's time I grew up.

People who played it, seemed to like it a lot for the most part. I think worst case scenario, the game comes out a bit thin on content but improves over time, just like Destiny

I play on console, and there is no game like this at all for console gamers. A streamlined extraction shooter could be a lot bigger than people think

In addition, a lot of the rendering technology on the PS5, and especially on the PS5 Pro, is really awesome. So we're planning some awesome usage of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), and some additional support in upscaling and resolution. So if you have a PS5 or PS5 Pro you'll be pleasantly surprised by how we deliver on the console.

Man I held the fort while you were gone. This is not the Man in a box I grew to love.

Next thing you be playing offline single player titles. Grow up? Man up mate.

Major red flag when the Bungie devs said "Geoff Keighley was getting worked so we hooked him up with one of our better players."

An ecosystem thrives when rabbits can multiply. Players won't have a Bungie dev come save them when they're getting dunked on. They'll quit.

I can't tell if the game is just washed out due to streaming, it's blurred to hell with TAA, or it's just styled to be washed out. Compared to the cinematics it's just so...flat?

Someone get me an ARC Raiders logo. I'm done with Marathon! Everybody is yelling!

(Single player is still a dead art form)

Have you ever got the sense that Geoff is a real gamer?

I have doubts now on how successful this game is going to be, but the target audience isn't Geoff Keighley, I can promise you that. He's only there to promote the game.

It's like saying because Jim Ryan had his PS5 the wrong way that a lot of people would do the same, but it takes a special kind of moron to do that, especially when the PS5 (that version) came with a stand. Though I do note that many people I know didn't actually set up the stand, so I'm not saying there aren't a lot of Geoff Keighleys in gaming but that this game isn't targeting him or even me.

It was never going to get universal praise.

I have more thoughts that I'd like to discuss, however as usual that bottle of red has turned into 3. Tomorrow maybe.

I will say I have concerns, especially on the map size. The seem very coy about what this game actually is.

I would say he's the ultimate gamer. He loves games so much that he figured out how to do The Game Awards and sniff Kojima hair. I've heard him talk a few times and he appears to play a lot of modern games.

Is he a PvP gamer? Probably not.

It's about rabbits vs wolves. Low skill players have to find fun in your game or they'll get chased away. I saw 0 mechanics that would appeal to rabbit level players.

Plus, the wolves are going to be equipped with shoulder mounted lasers and sci fi body armor. The rabbits won't.

I agree with your take here.

Most of the GAAS hits over the last 10 years did not receive universal praise before launch either. The internet is bad at forecasting PvP. I consider myself less bad.

I'm still going to watch Marathon content. My views could shift over time.

Always love talking GAAS with a fellow thespian.

Since nobody addressed this yet: Yes, this is running on Tiger Engine (Destiny 1 and 2's engine).
Which bodes well for the game in regards to PC performance: Destiny 2 maxed out at native 4K runs smooth as hell even on lower-end cards -- while being super pretty, largely in part due to it's great art direction.

Remember folks, THREE POINT EIGHT BILLION for Destiny and whatever the crap this abomination is supposed to be.
I´d not be surprised if this game didn`t manage a "marathon" but instead just makes a swift sprint into the grave. This doesn´t look "concord" bad, but a full price game in this game category that looks ...like this.......it certainly got potential for the next colossal fail for Sony.

Thing is these days you can't launch a game bare bones and build from there like in the old days.

If this game launches in the same state as Destiny 1 then they are fucked. 3 maps would be fine if they are medium to large in size, but signs point to that not being the case though.

The biggest red flag is that the "alpha" is under NDA.

Jury is out, I need to sleep on it.

I think Helldivers looks awful, so what do I know about live service, but Marathon looks even worse and I think cynicism has only increased since then and there's a lot more hate targeting this game.

I think you can.

Humans haven't changed fundamentally since PUBG launched. We want to play new, compelling experiences.

PUBG launched in a horrible state with no content and thrived because there was nothing else like it. The barebones nature of PUBG was also able to keep players hooked until the updates started flowing.

I don't think you can launch a barebones game if your title has close competitors. Concord was barebones and launched next to Overwatch, Valorant, Siege. I think most would agree that Concord would have done better in 2014.

I think Marathon is in a solid position with regards to competition.

Oh, and good point about the NDA alpha. That is not a good sign.

I wonder what changes they had to make here to avoid legal issues with Microsoft and Halo.

Seems like having one of the runners be the Security Officer would have been a no-brainer. I haven't been involved with the ARGs but I don't see many if any real connections to Marathon here.

In what world do they think this art style looks good?

In what world do they think this gameplay is unique enough to pull people away from their current multiplayer FPS game of choice?

In what world could Sony have not learned from Concord?

This fucking generation has been an absolute waste. Great hardware. But no vision for the software, except "See that thing that made a fuck-tillion dollars? Do that!"
I hate the colors and the art style.
It's like a LSD induced nightmare.

Looks quite dull.

I'm sure it will have a decent enough start due to Bungie/Destiny fans and good shooting mechanics, maybe that will be enough to build on. After 6 years and the trailer I was expecting better.

Match of the Day highlights are not an hour long. Actually...hang on...Embark did it in 6 minutes.

You show off what you're proud of and hide what you didn't put energy into.

We really comparing it to a game that's still fucking vaporware?

Shits been on my Steam wishlist since like 2022

I want a new experience so I am not killing the game over what I saw though I did over how they want to keep pricing a secret

But so many red flags (just saw you mentioned alpha under NDA as well) that are a cause for concern

I was never going to play this anyways, but I don't like the aesthetic in this game. It reminds me of Mirror's Edge, too many instances of... Large garish mono color spaces, lack of detail in general. You know like in Mirror's Edge the world was white, except when you entered a green or blue building, or the red climbing things. This game looks a lot like that. I agree the Bungie was a terrible acquisition. I still wish they made a single player Destiny alternative, that game did interest me.

This look mid as hell, honestly how many of these shooters have we got now that look pretty much look and play the same. If you told me this was Call of Duty with some future warfare title, I would honestly believe you.

Crazy to believe this is what Bungie were cooking all this time, and they were the ones advising other Sony studios on Live service games and then they push this absolute meh looking title out.

Who knows, gameplay might be good but then again Concords gameplay was meant to be good but it just wasn't appealing to the masses.

Being much more optimistic and more open, what I see from this I'm more interested in the art direction as I like what they're going for in terms of the world, I also like the tech music and the tech aesthetic they're going for.

I'm not into multiplayer games or extraction shooters or anything like this , So nowadays I rarely play anything multiplayer as majority of my gaming is single player

So right now I'm more leaning into purchase from this at release and it's hard to care about some of the opinions on here who spent 70 pages talking about Concord at 1 point when you have an agenda so deep, it's very hard to care about what your opinion is because it's hard to actually see that it's truly objective....

So some already had arguments laid down for hating whatever this was going to be regardless, So difficult to say... So I'll wait for a beta and if the game play is what I enjoyed from Destiny and Halo it's definitely going to be a Day One.

I want solid experiences, new to me is completely overrated because something never being done before it doesn't mean it's going to be good.

So I think this focus of trying to ask for a series of new features doesn't always mean everybody's going to rally behind it.

I'd rather they focus on getting everything done correctly to have a solid experience even if that experience core concept is one that is a known design.

Look at battlefield 2042, they fucking tried something new and you guys spent all your energy attacking them for those changes and now the entire argument is for battlefield to go back to the basics.

So in 2025, I don't give a fuck if Mafia Old Country, GTAVI, Battlefield and yes Marathon merely focus on those grounded, core, solid expected design choices.
