My wife is turning into a bit of a Marina stan. She plays this album and The Family Jewels all the time now. I don't get how she hasn't broken out in the States. I thought Primadonna would do it. Maybe the new single will get things going.
If Primadonna couldn't break her into the US, Power & Control has a lot of work to do. I'm unsure if it can.

Video is a bit dark.

And it is also not Bubblegum Bitch. Grr.
That has to be a single at some point!! Probably would've been a better follow-up to Primadonna. P&C could've come after BB.

Like the new video but wish it had a little more to it. But yes she is gorgeous ugghh

And yah the guy was cute x3 heheh
I agree. It's pretty to look at, but it seems empty. A little too empty. Primadonna video is better.

album still isn't out in the US officially :(
Yeah, but you'd think there would've been SOME promo for Primadonna over here. :|

Nah, promotion won't start till it comes out in the US.

Ellie Goulding's album came out in early 2010 in the UK, and hardly anybody in the US knew about her until her album came out in the US in early 2011.

So they'll start promoting only AFTER the album is released...?

For the longest time I didn't understand why "Lights" was getting airplay lately until I heard that the album had just released here. I read that Primadonna is supposed to get added to some Top 40 playlists in June, so I guess there's still hope.

So I just heard this girl for the first time, been listening to most of the album on youtube (figured there was a 5 page thread why not check her out?). Primadonna hasn't done anything for me, but man do I love Teen Idle. Lonely Hearts Club was pretty great too. Others have been eh to good.

This album was awful. What happened to the fun yodeling she used to do? Was never a huge fan, but this album felt like a HUUUGE step back. She tried to critique trash pop and forgot to make a fun album.

Yeah, listened to like 4 songs from her first album and....why isn't this new one more like that one? I suppose its nice shes trying something different, but this first one is way cooler (if less likely to catch on in America).

I like the more electro sound of this album, though. There's too much filler on The Family Jewels to make it anywhere near as appealing as a complete piece of work, unfortunately.

I haven't listened to her first album, so feel free to disregard this if it is blatantly wrong, but I don't understand posts like these. Why does her album have to be fun? And why does it have to be more like her last one? I understand if you wish it was, but asking why it isn't seems weird.

Ooooh, I guess that's why this happened:

I don't think The Family Jewels is more fun than Electra Heart. They are both generally upbeat with depressing themes.

Hmm...I'm glad I took the time to venture into OT today. This seems interesting and will be checking her out after work tonight :D

Thanks for making it worth sifting through the OT threads.

All I did was ask about the yodeling. It was nice. Nothing to do with the entire sounds of the album. I like electro but she isnt very good at it imo. She thought she would be either because electro pop fans are easy to please, or she was trying to avoid sophomore slump. And it should be more like her last one because I think this one is worse and critics agree. I mean aren't you curious why she abandoned new wave to make cliche europop? When you have a good start you don't jump out and start again.

Can't wait to hear it in LA!

I think that's just how she is. She needs to try new things because her tastes have varied greatly between albums. Even in a more recent interview she said now that she got the big pop album out of the way, she feels like she has more freedom and will probably do something completely different next time.

"I don’t think that you have to reinvent yourself every time, but I think it’s in my nature to want to explore different parts of me. For example, for the next album musically, now that I’ve quenched my thirst on doing the pop album that I’d always wanted to, I can feel a lot freer to go and do something completely different again, so I guess I’ll just see."

After watching the Power & Control video again, I can say that it does very well what it sets out to do. The guy is hot. The lighting's great, has some beautiful shots, and has an overall great feel to it.

How in the world could someone listen to this new record without having gone out and made an effort to listen to The Family Jewels?! Come on folks, get on that!

It's a much better album fwiw although Electra Heart has its moments. Primadonna crushes everything else on it though.

I think the highs on Electra Heart are much higher than the highs on The Family Jewels, but the lows are also much (much) lower. (Looking at you, Hypocrates)

The Family Jewels is an amazing album, regardless of if you think it's better or worse in comparison to Electra Heart. Anyone who's enjoyed Marina should listen to it, for real.

That's your homework for the weekend! Go listen to it!

Yeah I appreciate her continuing to experiment, and there are some valuable tracks here.

I wouldn't call this album cliche europop, but thanks for the answer, I can understand that I think.

I still prefer the first album, but I was going into Electraheart with the idea that The Family Jewels was such a crazy-weird revelation that it would be impossible to replicate.

So I was relieved that the new album was something different and still rather good.

I'm so disappointed with this album. I actually had to stop listening it halfway through because I was getting tired.

It feels like the only song that's up to The Family Jewels' level is "Primadonna". Most of the rest feels like filler - not actually bad, but not particularly interesting either. I guess I like the lyrics in "Teen Idle", which seems to be a fan-favorite, but the song does absolutely nothing for me.

I was expecting to be blown away by this, but what I ended up with was an uninspired, diluted version of her debut album. Meh.

... And then I got to the Deluxe edition bonus tracks. Why the hell aren't these in the regular edition of the album? All four of them are better than any of the songs in the regular listing, with the exception of "Primadonna". "Buy the Stars" is amazing.

I don't understand Marina at all. But, yeah. I guess I'll just add "Primadonna", "Buy the Stars", "Sex Yeah", "Radioactive", and "Lonely Hearts Club" to my The Family Jewels playlist and be done with it.

Dark haired Marina > blonde Marina. In every way.

Ok, just an update: I don't think any record ever grew on me this much after a bad first impression. I now love this album.

That's all.

Hahaha, nice! I'm glad you ended up liking it, Brazil! What're your favorites now?

That's a tough one.

The lyrics in "Teen Idle" never cease to amaze me... But "Power & Control" is just too much fun, and "Valley of the Dolls" is one of the classiest tunes ever. I'm really enjoying "Bubblegum Bitch", "Living Dead", and "Starring Role" too - all songs that didn't click with me on the first go. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood at the time.

I'm really glad I sticked around. Marina's got me once again.

Well, this is exciting: Primadonna is being added June 5th to American pop radio!

How, errr, disappointing was the Power and Control video? =/
I love it! It had to grow on me, though. It doesn't seem like there's anything happening, but it's telling the story through symbols, which there are plenty. And it's so pretty to look at!

Is Electra Heart already influencing other musicians from around the world?

K-pop girl group f(x) revealed today plans for a new concept album entitled "Electric Shock". One of the members goes on to dye her hair:

Copying? Influenced by? Coincidence? Has nothing to do with? Hmmmm?

Also, if I was female I would want to look like dis:

P.S. How do they get so big?

I just came across a 'final' version of this song on Tumblr. I think it's probably my favorite unreleased song of Marina's.

Scab and Plaster
.

It's such a great song, and it would totally fit in on The Family Jewels.

"You hold me down, you hold me up
Oh daddy are we out of luck?
You brought me up, you bring me down
You shut me in, you shut me out

I've lost, I've lost my confidence
I've found my self belief
And in a cup of loneliness I've found instant relief

You tell me what to say and wear
You say that it's because you care
But I prefer to be alone
Than live a life that's not my own!"

p.s. wtf marina's hot ugh

I really hope her next album is a refinement of the The Family Jewels, aka songs like Scab & Plaster, Buy the Stars, Teen Idle, and Sex Yeah.

I've been hearing a lot more about Marina in the US recently. I went a party after LA Pride and the dude had practically all of Marina's videos on his TV. So we watched Primadonna and Radioactive. One girl at the party said she was obsessed with the song and another guy said he loved the video. But for some reason Primadonna doesn't seem to be taking off in the US. I've been tracking the radio play, and while it's getting played here and there, it doesn't seem to be increasing very much at all. I just don't think Marina will make it big in America. She's too quirky and self-aware to be accepted by the masses methinks.

Her new album isn't on Spotify, but The Family Jewels was, and I really, really like her. Thanks for making the thread and allowing me to discover new music!

Yay! You're welcome! I'm glad you see the talent.

You can search for the Electra Heart album tracks on youtube. I would suggest Teen Idle, Starring Role, Buy the Stars, Power & Control.

If you feel so inclined, you can vote for her on LA's pop radio station here! She needs our help!

I cannot wait to see her live, AHHHHHHH!
Me tooooo! I've heard from people that aren't even necessarily Diamonds that her voice is powerful live. Ms Mr, which have some great songs, are opening for her, so I'm excited for that too!

Primadonna is burning slowly on US pop radio. More stations are adding it every week, but not a whole lot.

Also, the first Lonely Hearts Club show played tonight in Norwich. She performed Teen Idle for the first time. I hope some decent quality videos pop up soon.

I hope I feel the same way after listening to it some more. I've only listened to a handful of songs a few times but nothing's grabbing me like The Family Jewels did.
