Mario Kart 8 |OT| 8 oW

Mario Kart 8 doesn’t make you grind your way through the easy 50cc races just to get your collection of shiny gold trophies. Instead, placing in a higher speed automatically also earns you the trophy for the same cup at the lower speed as well. Think of it as finishing a game on “Hardcore” and automatically getting the “Normal” mode achievement. The retroactive awards also apply to stars, which are given for just how definitively you rout the competition. To get three stars, you need to not only place gold in a cup, but also have come in first place in each of the individual races.

Each speed will always keep the highest trophy and stars earned--so if you gold in 50cc and silver in 100cc, you won’t get knocked down a rank in the 50cc cup--but you can feel free to skip the lower speeds if you find them too easy. And that’s a good thing, because…

So ready for next Friday, haven't played a Mario Kart game since DS and it looks like this is going to be worth the wait.

Added my NNID to the spreadsheet and sent a few requests out. Kinda regret not adding my NNID to my business cards now seeing as this might be the game to give the Wii U a much needed shot in the arm.

That's pretty cool. In that case I'll probably just start off on 100cc to get used to the game.

So now that we've got an idea of what the interest is in this game, can we talk about GafKart leagues? Everyone will be doing tourneys from time to time, but full on leagues, especially with summer starting, would be great.

I was thinking, depending on the size of the field, maybe we can have 'conferences' that are based around the time zones. Each conference can have dedicated times for racing they agree on, and set up heats with in their respective groups. As for the races themselves, each week can be a single series of a certain number of races, the tracks decided on before hand. I'd suggest a game of battle to decide the initial seating for each 'heat', and maybe another somewhere in the actual set of races.

After a number of weeks, have the conference champions go against each other in a final tourney series over the next couple of weeks, but like NASCAR, mix in losers with the champs so they have a chance to screw them over one last time.

What would you all want in a GafKart league?

I LOVE everything about this track but the music.
It just doesn't do it for me. It doesn't sound like a Bowser's Castle song.
I was expecting someting more..well.. sad, lonely and dark like previous games. It worked for 3D World because it wasn't a Castle and the building was full of lights and circus stuff going on but at least to me, this doesn't fit a Bowser's Castle track.

I guess I love Wii Bowser's Castle too much :/

Oh man, I love the music in this track; it might even be my favorite part of the entire course. It's so epic, yet still has that playful Mario aspect to it. To each their own, I guess.

Speaking of music: Cloudtop Cruise? Perfection. Obviously I haven't played the game yet, but that may be my favorite new course.

It doesn't really matter when we'll all be playing in the same Tournament (Community).

So there's no limit (or a very high limit) to how many can join a tournament? multiple races can take place at the same time in a tournament?

That's awesome if so :)... I thought the limit would be 12 and it's just one group each round.

Don't like the sound of that micro stutter, wonder how bad it is in play?

Seems like this micro stutter "only" happen when you're playing against CPU controlled opponents.

Digital Foundry vs MK8 said:
What makes this situation all the more strange is the fact that this problem only appears when CPU opponents are active. In time trials or split-screen matches, with AI-controlled drivers disabled, the frame-rate updates flawlessly while race introductions and victory animations all display correctly as well. The frequency and pattern of this problem suggests an internal timing issue, potentially related to Mario Kart TV, rather than one of performance.
