So after putting quite a few hours into Mario Kart 8 with a friend last night and today, I think I have formed a solid opinion on the game.
Quite possibly the most satisfying kart racer to actually play/race. The controls are basically perfect, and it feels great sliding around corners, getting boosts, using your items wisely.
The track design is the best in the series. Not just how they play, but the sheer amount of detail and polish in every track is mindboggling. The graphics are crazy nice, too. I don't know if it was my friend's TV or that we were sitting further back, but I didn't even notice any jaggies personally. I'm not saying they aren't there, but they were not as noticeable as I was expecting considering the complaints.
Fantastic music and sound effects.
The roster is very... weird. I actually really enjoy the koopalings being in there, but to quote my friend last night upon unlocking Pink Gold Peach, "What the fuck is that? Come on..." lol Too many babies and repeat/reskinned characters. No King Boo was a big let down for my friend.
Worst battle mode in the series. I know it hasn't been super great for a while, but MK8 is by far the worst of the bunch. I don't care what bullshit excuse they gave in that one interview about "wanting people to not expect someone else coming around a corner" - it was just rushed/ran out of time. That's the only excuse I'll accept. I will forgive them if they release DLC arenas with a few extra modes besides balloon battle (probably not happening).
Lack of modes. Lack of different gameplay types. Give me Career mode (ala SART) or Mission Mode (MKDS) at the very least. Those have a lot of replay value and keep me playing the game for a long time. Just having online racing isn't enough for me.
Overall - very fun game, but still a little bit disappointing. The gameplay is aces, but the lack of modes/variety/options really holds the game back just like it has the past few Mario Kart games.
