Marvel Cinematic Universe |OT| Discussion on released and future projects (spoilers)

I bought the Phase One blu ray box set and I have just watched The Incredible Hulk again. Is the movie considered a loose sequel to the Ang Lee version or is it a complete reboot. I know that the rights were owned by different studios etc.

Its a sequel which is why he is on the run in the beginning of the movie.

It's not a sequel. It's a movie where the character is already established in the mind of audience...and as you mentioned, starts with Banner on the run.

It is in no way related to the Ang Lee version. They are two movies set in two different universes.

It's kinda both, but not really. They changed his origin in the opening credits to include the Super Soldier Serum experiment, but they kept the part with him being in hiding in South America. Not a full on sequel, not a full on reboot either, but something in between. It'll be interesting if they ever make any more direct references to the events of the Ang Lee film, the stuff with his father, etc.

And this is exactly why we have to have origin stories regurgitated every time there's a reboot of a character. People cannot seem to figure out when a new universe starts and always want to pair it previous movies. I still remember people bitching that Joker was in The Dark Knight since he was killed in Batman '89.

The thing about Hulk is that he's extremely popular. He had a television series in the 70's so the character already resonates with baby boomers. That's why with The Incredible Hulk it was easy to have it start with him on the run. There was really no need for an "origin" movie like Iron Man or Cap.

Plus, the Ang Lee version was already fresh in the mind of younger viewers.

So the Daredevil rights have reverted to Marvel? Cool.

What about Fantastic 4 Dr. Doom and Punisher? Are there any other rights at other companies? Except for X-Men and Spiderman of course...

Fantastic Four and Doom unfortunately are still with Fox. Ghost Rider is still with Sony. Punisher, Blade, and Daredevil went back to Marvel.

IIRC, Stan talking about Doctor Strange isn't that far-fetched. I have the artbook for The Avengers, and in the foreword they mention Ant-Man and Doctor Strange as possible future characters in the MU. We now know Ant-Man is real...so Strange must be close behind.

For what it's worth, Marvel does have a script for Dr. Strange.

I would like it if Blade/Punisher/Daredevil could have their own interconnected side cinematic universe where Marvel could do darker Rated-R stories. Those characters would probably work better separately from the more family friendly Avengers stuff.

I REALLY want a Carol Danvers movie. She has to be in the Avengers. Hell, model it after Hickman's upcoming run and make her a co-captain in Avengers 3!

Oh I agree. I hate origin stories in movies where the hero's origin is already known. I don't need to see Clark Kent grow up, I don't need to see Uncle Ben shot, etc. What kickstarted this was how well received and fantastic Casino Royale and Batman Begins were. But those were two origin stories that had never been on the silver screen before. Now every time a movie does poorly, it's time to reboot. And you can't reboot it without an origin story because the moronic common public can't figure it out it's a different universe despite the vastly different aesthetics, tone and actors.

Punisher and Blade is with Marvel now. Fantastic 4 and Dr. Doom is still belong to Fox.

Here is a link that helped me a lot but little outdated since they haven't update DareDevil section.

Thanks guys, I totally forgot about Blade.

I think the reason they stick with origin stories is because they are easier to tell. Everyone knows Batman's origin, but it's explored in everything all the time. It's a lot harder to come up with original, or at least different, stories.

Not gonna lie - an R rated Punisher/Daredevil crossover would be amazing.

Malekith looks a LOT cooler than I expected. I wasn't sure how they were going to translate that without him looking goofy as hell. Doesn't really look like Eccleston though.

Also lol at the "Thursday Mourning" code title.

Two more S.H.E.I.L.D. tv show castings:

Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker have boarded the Marvel TV adaptation, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Henstridge will play science whiz Agent Gemma Simmons, while De Caestecker will play Agent Leo Fitz, a technology guru. The duo spend all their time together -- mostly bickering -- and are masters of their respective fields at a remarkably young age.

Really digging the pics coming out of Thor. It looks like they're full-on embracing the fantasy of that character. I think it's going to go a long way in keeping the MCU movies fresh. If each one has a different focus and elements, but still close enough to mesh for Avengers crossovers, I don't think the people will grow as tired as quickly.

Wow you can't even tell that Eccleston is under there.

Yeah, well I guess it's gonna be a sort of tradition. Not that the makeup for these crazy bad guys isn't well done, but they're hiding some fantastic actors behind it.

And at the same time it makes me sad about Mandarin.

I'm curious to see what they do with his rings. Feige simply said they won't be shooting out fire and ice and they're not alien-powered. But that doesn't mean they won't have supernatural elements to them. It's such an intricate part of Mandarin's character that they can't just completely ignore it.
