MVC3 did really well in the USA but I don't know how well it did outside USA. It has always been a game that was popular more in the US.

And there are tricks to get better match up, like changing the language or something. I am not sure I don't play online at all so I don't know.

If I were you I would put those regular guys on Friends list if they were same level or above me.

What this generation is missing though, is the MVC2 arcade experience. Like I have been used to the Versus series for quite some time but I wasn't really aware of a MVC2 coming out. I liked MVC1 but it wasn't like "OMG HYPEST GAME EVAR!!!11" I walk to my local arcade one fine afternoon and they have not one but two MVC2 machines and people playing on that. Even back then people were like crazy good, I remember seeing the Psylocke tri-jump combos and that shit blew my mind. Then I saw the AHVBx3 and that shit blew me away.

I used to come there every day just to see what crazy teams people had. These were the times when Guile was top tier because he could jab you and you would eat a Sonic Hurricane. Ice Man got NO respect. Juggernaut was hella broken. Ken and Akuma were broken because if you got them into an air combo ending with Tatsu kicks that was almost a dead character. One guy used to run Omega Red and he was totally beasting on people. For quite some time I ran Ken/Guile/Jin (mostly for the godly assist) and did decent.

Then the scene started to change and people started being good with other characters like Blackheart, Cyclops, Storm, Cable (Psylocke was always popular at my arcades, even as a point). When Sentinel, Magneto and Captain Commando players started owning that's when the game got real hype. The game totally took off as now the game was being played at a totally different level. So many people at my arcade picked MSPs, Team Scrub, Santhrax and one guy totally beasted with Magneto/Sentinel/CapCom. I had to adapt so I slowly started picking up Storm as my main and used the godly CapCom assist. GOOD TIMES... and best of all were times when some random dude would come in and beast with a random team. I still remember this Cammy player raping everyone's top tier team (he had Doom and Cable too).

Now though everything is on the Internets and that "surprise" of seeing some new technology live in front of you is gone. Still game is mad hype.

The best was the timed unlocks. I remember every week the arcade was getting a new character.

I used to run a Guile / Jin / Sentinel that was unstoppable before people got godly at the game with Magneto and Sentinel. I remember I went on a 56 game win streak at the arcade by my house and it only ended when the arcade closed. No one could get passed me with the Jin assist and Sentinel main. Good times
 
Lab session with Viewtiful Joe:

The best combo that I could come up with for VJ after some intensive lab sessions were those involving a combo started with basic jump in ground series DP+M, j. H, QCB+H xx Mach Speed -> MH jump MH jump MH QCB+M air dash QCB+M Gun hyper.

And that still doesn't do that much damage (like a bit over 700K for 2 bars). For one bar you can do some nice combos instead of the Mach but you will still be only scratching the 600K mark.

I am experimenting with combos using Air Joe and they do slightly better damage but way more difficult to land the Gun hyper at the end. Don't know exactly when I am supposed to hyper cancel at the end. I don't think it will be used because even though it's more flash and does a bit more damage, it's much tougher and you will be dropping it more often than you will be hitting it.

Bottom line I have seen (and from referring with some combo videos of Joe online and Trag's channel) is that to do maximum damage with VJ you have to develop a BnB combo ending in V Godhand. Basically what you need to do is, get the guy in a combo do the BnB, land him and with an OTG assist get the V God Hand. This will be doing like 500K damage (let's say a bit less than half the damage). Now you need to come up with a high/low mix up and get another combo in but now the combo has to be deadlier because he's in slow mode.

You can do much bigger combos in slow mode because you can tag in a lot of special moves. In slow mode it's also easier to mix up them up so it's not that much more difficult. You really need a very solid game plan to execute this. It's also good to have combos in the bag where you need to make use of Mach Speed's invulnerable frames to beat out a hyper, start an air combo, build some meter, land, OTG assist V Godhand.

Joe is never going to "touch of death" you unless he has X Factor. He works on set ups with V Godhand and he needs an OTG. I want to experiment using the slow and the shocking pink OTG move.

Still though he's gimmicky unless someone finds a way to loop V Godhands.

I do understand why they took out Red Hot Chilli Pepper OTG property, he would be OP with that shit.

Charging Joe's projectiles gives them tracking property (they stick on you for quite some time). MIND BLOWN! Also his overhead comes HELLA fast, like there is no way anyone can react to that shit. You can also toss the bomb around with voomerang.

I wonder if you can set up something like a jump in charged Voomerang and start a combo off of that shit.

Joe has a lot of technology, I will say that. I am thinking if I can get my opponent in the corner with a combo, OTG V Godhand I can easily restart another combo because there is no way they will be able to react/respond to what I do. A simple cr.L, cr.M, f+M is going to be hella hard for them to block, leading into a combo of choice. A 10 second slow is A LOT.

I think that's a reason why the crowd went crazy for BIONIC AAAAARM.

With the way the average player on the street seemed to have disregarded Spencer to that point, it was like a we-are-going-past-ludicrous-speed-to-plaid moment.
 
No one had seen Spencer actually perform, not even in a stream or a competition. Combofiend had been working on the team for quite some time and only those who had played him knew he had a nice team going on.

I don't think anyone called a no Sentinel, all She Hulk final for Final Round. That's why it was so hype.

I expect some insane shit at EVO, when everyone from across the country will come and share some tech. Right now there hasn't been much cross country play in MVC3. It's going to be really hype watching specialists at work.

This is also why some of the streams without big name players are so hype because you see some motherfucking hype shit like that Storm ROM at work. Straight out from the underground.
 
Yeah I was honestly surprised NON of the big players had picked up on the Storm ghetto ROM. It has a very similar concept to Magneto's fly mode dash forward, H repeat ROM.

Then I saw Honzo with that unblockable set up with Doom missiles/Taskmaster's string. If you didn't advance guard at the right slash, you at an unblockable and the missiles kept you in block stun. He had a similar set up with Ammy's Cold Star too. He killed Phoenix almost every time he snapped her in, it was basically how he won the tournament because he got the favorite Filipino Champ (another Phoenix player) out this way and won the grand final with it.

Oh and MarlinPie's C Viper as well. ChrisG also had some insane matches with IFC Yipes where he also won that. Lots of solid Deadpool play at the RAMnation, one guy had the Bolo loop down could do like 5-6 reps of it.
 
Anyone have advice for these two teams? I've thought about them a lot so they should work pretty well, but I like fresh eyes.


Rushdown:

Jill(Arrow Kick)/Thor(Mighty Spark)/Doom(Hidden Missiles)

  • On point, Jill should mix up from the word go, constantly canceling into feral crouch and keeping pressure up under the cover of Thor and Doom Assists.
  • Jill can stretch out combos/throws with Hidden Missiles to OTG
  • When Jill get hurt/solid hit confirm, DHC trick into Thor for guaranteed kill
  • Keep enemies moving against Thor with Jill and Doom assists to set up Mighty Hurricane 50/50s
  • Use X-factor lvl 2 on Thor to extend his already top health and get a hit confirm into guaranteed kill. Do not save lvl 3, Thor combos start dropping and extra damage is worthless.
  • Doom on anchor as jack of all trades, can rush down or time out if necessary.
  • Extra meter for Doom runaway hypers


Zoning:

Dormammu(Liberation)/Sentinel(Drones)/Doom(Hidden Missiles)

  • On point, Dormammu stocks points under cover of Sentinel/Doom Assists
  • Dorm looks for fullscreen hit confirms into DHC for 800+ damage
  • Sentinel looks for aerial hit confirms, command grab mixups made safe by doom missiles
  • Doom on anchor as jack of all trades, can rush down or time out if necessary.
  • Liberation assist for full punishes by Doom/Sent for guaranteed kill
 
Dormammu/Sentinel/Doom is the most OVERUSED zoning team in MVC3. At Final Round there were at least 3-4 players using that team and there was even a mirror match of that team.

Guilty used that team and she did pretty well with it. Another guy used it better but I can't remember his name.

On the point of Storm in Marn's team, Marn uses Magneto because that's where he got his name from when playing MVC2 in Texas: Marneto. Magneto is to Marn like Storm is to Jwong, these guys are playing these characters because they have a legacy to maintain.

Also Storm needs more meter than Magneto and she doesn't have as high of damage output as Magneto (even with the ROM). Storm also has less priority on attacks than Magneto and not as good beam. She makes it up by having a great LVL1 hyper which she needs to use a lot and she likes to runaway a lot trying to make the opponent come to her and make use of a mistake. Magneto is more rushdown and Marn likes it that way. Marn can already kill off a character using Magneto/Zero DHC glitch.
 
Also I am against using Doom missiles in a rushdown team unless you have some nasty set up involving that assist. You drop combos with the missiles floating around.

In a zoning team, Doom missiles are GOD tier.

clockwork's ammy with doom missiles is pretty awesome. :O
 
It's because he has set ups with that combination and he knows the exact timings of the missiles so he adjusts. Plus Amaterasu can play both zoning and rushdown.

Like he would call Doom, do ground combo, air combo change sword stance, missiles will hit, charge up the sword and slash causing a ground bounce into more damage. That's a set up.

Doom missiles also have one extra utility on that team and that is to prolong the game and build more meter. It interrupts enemy combos too and that's excellent on a Phoenix team.

If he could X Factor and use Hyper meter for just those 2 character, he wouldn't even need Phoenix. Some say Phoenix has been a clutch for Clockw0rk but to make up for the lack of X Factor and hyper meter he has some up with some really high level technology for these 2 characters.

I'm pretty aware of the timing and use it for setups and combo extention. It's also necessary to keep people getting too jumpy against Jill.
 
If it works, it works. Just make sure you get some real match experience with that because you don't want to be playing and having your own combos being messed up by Doom missiles.

I'm more worried about not having enough Jill practice because I don't want to use her if I can't do her cancels instantly. It would be so much easier with a hit box, but the dude's not shipping them out again until june :-(
 
Came damn close to beating a High Lord just now. Got a very decent lead in the first half of the match and then I choked and he proceeded to kick my ass with all the meter he had built up.

Dammit I turned into a Lord. I liked being one of the few Rangers.

Just use her. From my experience, her hard part of her gameplay is not her combos but how to get in. She has no air dash, no air moves that moves her forward, and her command teleport is not invincible. Combos don't mean a lot when you can't get those hits in.

Teleport is invincible from the last frame of startup. Her dash is really good as well. You can Arrow Kick from almost full screen as a punish, too.
 
Another day goes by without a Capcom leak. :(

Going to sleep. At least today I got to learn a new character (Viewtiful Joe). The trick to doing high damaging combo with Joe is get them in V Godhand and just do combos that have a lot of Red Hot Kicks in them (H). You have to place them so you get the full hits in. You can actually get a re-launch after doing a series of Air Joes.

I am definitely going to try that Bomb explode trick. It resets SOMETHING if you block it during a combo I just don't know what. I am not really good at doing these tricky stuff, I have always been more of a straightforward player in terms of doing combos.

Flash is still playing his Joe and he also has Iron Man (Beam)/Tron on that team. I wanna see that tomorrow, it's on Episode 5 of Xanadu.

For all the VJ fans out there, I think Joe has the tools but what he is lacking is damage in combos right now. It seems his entire game plan revolves around doing combos ending in Godhand and then setting up a situation where you get another combo but this time the combo is deadlier and they will die from it. He can get in easily, he can cross you up, throw projectiles which you can combo off of, an almost instant overhead readily available and some nice specials to help him control space. He can also plink dash to make his regular dashing faster on the ground.

Ok, how does Dormammu(liberation)/MODOK(barrier)/Trish(peekaboo) sound?

It's kind of a gimmicky team, but what I like is that with Dorm on point, you can throw out barrier, then peekaboo is set while the barrier is still up, then another barrier while peekaboo is up.

Trish and MODOK assists are the only ones I found where I could do that. Sentinel drones are pretty close, though.

Anyone know of any quick-recovering assists that stay out after the partner leaves?

28 years old as well. Coming up on my 7th wedding anniversary with my wife this year as well as my 7th year working here at Microsoft. Got a three year old sweet daughter and a three month old son. Life is busy and good.
 
Sorry bout last night Proto, ISP went to shit I was getting pings of 350 to seattle, when I usually get 60-80. Looks like it's all good now.

30 here, though couple months i won't be.
